February 25 Board Meeting [00:00:00] Welcome to the West Linn - Wilsonville School District regular board meeting. Will you call the Romans Douglas Chelsea King Martin? Dear Betty Reynolds here check fetch your villain hides here red mullet or here. Thank you to Meridian Creek and their staff for hosting us tonight and for mr. Nelson and his team for making the communication system works. So well, we're going to begin with board and superintendent reports and start with dr. Reynolds. [00:01:00] So I participated in many District activities which showcase the excellent work of our students and the engagement of our community and that's included mentoring the West Linn High School interact club and. Attending the health and wellness and long-range planning work sessions The Joint Safety Committee training and the bond Summit our students also demonstrated real leadership in proposing a bit coming together with other students from. From the area. I'm proposing a bill on common-sense gun safety. And also Westland High School's Unity Club continues to demonstrate a commitment to diversity diversity and inclusion in their planning for their Unity day this spring. I've been active with Clackamas Community College and look forward to building upon the the link between [00:02:00] k12 and college. And again, I appreciate being able to discuss that with chair pitch and superintendent Ludwig. I've been active with the Oregon Community College Association board and participated in a very informative presentation by Tim Nesbitt on pers. And potential Cost Containment bills this session. It was very informative and I'm a I'm happy to share that with anyone. I was in meetings with the governor on the next biennial budget and have met with several legislators including representative prusak and attending town halls and visits during Lobby days. And it's what it's very heartening that adequate and stable funding for education is a top priority. So I won't take the time now to talk about that but happy to provide updates to anyone who might be interested. I also attended National School boards. Advocacy Institute in Washington DC and [00:03:00] a highlight of that was very diverse representation by Oregon school boards limit school board members of color caucus some of the speakers included education secretary Betsy DeVos instead of Education chair Lamar Alexander. Essa implementation was mentioned several times. And so I think it's good to be mindful of the need to be moving forward on those measures and then we also met with every member of the Oregon Congressional Delegation and representatives Congressman Schrader was very optimistic about ideea funding and that's funding. Special needs student special education. He sponsored a bill. So maybe we can look forward to increased idea funding. So that's a very quick summary happy to share details if anyone's interested. Um, all right so over the last it's been about six [00:04:00] six weeks little bit longer period than our last reporting I spent time meeting with and responding to parents and students who had inquiries with regards to the renewal of our health and wellness curriculum. I began coaching the eighth grade mock Congressional team from Wood Middle School who will go to. Washington DC this spring I had the opportunity to attend a town hall meeting for Clackamas County elected representatives that was hosted by Congressman Kirk Schroeder. And at that meeting he kind of opened it up. Like hey, I'd like to hear from you. What can I do for you? Dr. David Pryor was there and he. Represented our board goal number two and how we could utilize increased funding for our professional growth. That's a brief summary of what he said. It was much better than that and I chose to [00:05:00] share about our community's interest in safe and welcoming schools, and I tried to highlight the fact that. Safety isn't just about smart gun laws. It's about a lot of other things and while certainly he is our federal or us Congressman doesn't necessarily impact our funding as greatly as our state of Oregon does are things that are happening at the national level that sometimes threaten the welcoming and safe environment of our schools and I excited just a couple of examples around ice officers appearing at schools and how we have students who. Come to school either themselves or Guided by a parent or Guardian who they are afraid. You know, somebody could be waiting for them to take them and about how when our decisions are being made by the president of the United States around who can and cannot have admission to our military. It [00:06:00] impacts how safe and welcomed our children feel. In our schools, so now I urged him to come talk to our students. Let our students be the voice and I have to give him tremendous credit. He took me up on his offer and he came and he spoke to a group of students at Wood Middle School and had an open conversation with them and allowed their voices to be heard. And so I have to acknowledge that. He took the time and did that I also had the ability to attend a tab meeting at Westland High School. It was kind of a kick off to a fact sharing week around alcohol and drug usage for teens and it was the kickoff to the National drug and alcohol fact week. I attended the Wilsonville choir Festival that had students from Lowry Beckman. Meridian wood and [00:07:00] Wilsonville High School all come together to sing. I also attended the Saturday the bond Summit along with my fellow board members and I would just like to give a quick thank you to our Administration for putting that together and Tim would lie in particular for leading us through some of the discussions and. Dr. Ludwig as well for welcoming the crowd and to Keith steel former School Board member who facilitated the meeting. I just it was a tremendous. There's a lot of people there like over 200 people. So it was just great to get input and feedback from our community. And then also I had a meeting with Three Rivers Charter School. And this spring we are engaging in the renewal process for their Charter and shortly here the board it will come before the board the question of do we intend to renew their Charter and and then if so, [00:08:00] would there be any changes to that Charter? So that's a process. That's that's upcoming before this board. But this initial meeting was just an opportunity for dr. Ludwig and I. To sit down with mr. Chapin of principal at Three Rivers along with two staff members and they just have an opportunity to share with us about their future goals their strategic plan. Like where did they want to go over the course of the next five years and what do they need to get there as well as. Some some through lines. What work do we have in common because our students start in our mainstream District, then they may choose or elect to go to the charter school and then they usually filter back into mainstream District. So what through lines do we have for those students in both of our. Educational practices and work and some of them are and I didn't capture them all but you know, both ends are doing work around [00:09:00] equity and both are trying to work on engaging their Community outside of their actual schools. And then also there is a discussion about retaining and hiring quality Educators and how you go about doing that. So, That is it. We're using new microphone systems here. So can you all hear me? I think somebody not Ed. Thank you. Now. I know the teachers feel over the past month. I have dedicated many hours to the work of our schools. I will not mention all the events and meetings but would like to touch on some of the highlights. One of my favorite things that I did on the past few weeks was attended the Allstate band. Organized by the Oregon music educators Association or ome a and this is a really neat program that are music educators organized [00:10:00] that bring students from across the state to come together. I attended the band. There's also Orchestra and choir. And they compose original music and that the composer is the conductor. So it's very high level. It was just like a professional concert. It was a treat to watch our middle schoolers perform at that level. I attended First Responders breakfast, which is this ongoing partnership between our district and First Responders in the Westland and Wilsonville communities and we spent. Gosh, maybe two hours hour and a half. I'm getting together and reviewing protocols and procedures for our security and our safety and I'm had the opportunity for essentially cross-pollination. There's Representatives who different agencies all sitting together at the table and they look at different realistic security scenarios and explore how they would handle them if they came up. [00:11:00] I did have the opportunity to meet with our state. Our state level representatives to discuss different issues that impact our local schools such as the power of wraparound services and Community Partnerships and suicide prevention. I also attended a meeting again by the Oregon school boards Association or OSB a they hosted a meeting where local locally elected officials and school board members and teachers and parents got together and talked about education funding. So that was another. Good night to just have a partnership and conversation across different people working on behalf of our schools. I would say I hands down the most joyful thing. I've done this winter is coach fifth sixth grade Rec girls basketball team and we had our end of the season Tournament of Rosemont Ridge. There was a lot of Westland and Wilsonville girls are playing basketball for hours. I [00:12:00] was a little deaf for the rest of the day, but it was a really good time. And a large part of my efforts as of late have included researching and thinking about and discussing our human sexuality education plan and the organ health and wellness standards. I had a lot of phone calls and in-person meetings with parents who represent a range of perspectives. I read a lot of emails and reviewed data so that I would understand what our community wants. And also what the the research demonstrates. I also spend some time reviewing that curriculum is being proposed. And in that same vein. I attended In This Very Room of very well attended Community Forum where hundreds of people got together from across our district and talked about there. Their opinions what they want from this curriculum, we had diverse perspectives represented and I was really inspired by the fact that the community came [00:13:00] together and had meaningful discussions. Sometimes across the vast difference and I was reminded that we ask our students to do this every day and their classrooms and it was just really neat to see that we adults could come together and engage in that same process. And I'd say, you know student voices are one that I value greatly one of the most profound experiences. I had in my research collection around this topic was visiting with Wilsonville high school students will recite in the circle and listen to about a dozen students talk about their experience of the health and wellness classrooms and. I just really value that opportunity. Thank you to the district for organizing that and Reagan. I know you were there with me as well and you know, the decisions that I make here student-centered and so having the student voices was really valuable when you [00:14:00] come have a seat. You're welcome to bring your signs. Please have a seat. There's plenty of seats. Please. Come have a seat. Please keep your seat signs down to at this time so that people behind you can see the people speaking up here. Thank you very much. Sorry for the interruption. Dr. Heights. So most of my work activities around the last few weeks with around the health and wellness curriculum talking to as many people as I can here in as many different voices as I can from as many different [00:15:00] groups as I can with my fellow board members. I attended to Wellness Health and Wellness curriculum night that was held here in late January. One more powerful events that I attended in. The last month was on February 1st. I met with 16 West Linn High School students to hear their perspective on the health and wellness curriculum all we hear I've heard a lot from parents and grandparents that was kind of my one opportunity here from students as to what they thought had worked up until that point their education what they would think would improve it. What would make it worse and thank you for Mr. Newman for helping to set that up. That was very valuable for me. I've been working as we'll talk about more. I've been working closely with the District staff of the last couple weeks to make sure that would if we were to adopt something tonight that it reflects what we've heard in particular with respect to opt-out abilities notice Provisions to making sure. The extent they don't agree with whatever we have have ways of being informed as to exactly what's happening. So that's been one thing I've been working [00:16:00] on attend the bonds Summit on Saturday with my fellow board members and over the past month. I've been speaking with and meeting with people who are interested in running for the school board. So the filing deadline is the end of March or near the end of March. So if you're planning on running for the board, feel free to reach out to me or anybody else that sitting up here. Thanks. Thank you. First of all, I want to recognize that representative prusak is in our audience today and introduce her. I mean Courtney neuron as well. Thank you very much for coming. I'm at with dr. Spencer Iams and dr. Ludwig to discuss our classroom learning environments and the work that the union and the district is doing together as well as workshops that are well attended by our staff and well regarded and. spoke [00:17:00] about the opportunity for a thorough presentation to the board. In a very near meeting, so we're looking forward to that and I'm sure that you will appreciate the information that they'll bring forward at that time as well. I had the good pleasure of watching a portion of to Wilsonville unified basketball sports events and would encourage anyone who has the opportunity to attend them. It's a it's a joy to see kids enjoying Sports. I want to point out some information that might have gotten passed by and snow and the discussion on the curriculum but congratulation to our schools and particularly at high school principals Westland. Wilsonville saw its graduation rate climb to 94.5%. [00:18:00] Again, could mr. Nelson. Could you put our goals up on the board? one of the. that's fine. One of the district goals is to grow student achievement. And to generate Equitable outcomes for all students while eliminating opportunity and achievement gaps and what we see is that we continue to make inroads in that area Westland High School recorded the top graduation rate and the state among large high schools. 98.2% graduation rate and Wilsonville high school was closed behind at ninety four point six. One of the things were most proud of is that graduation rates for students with individual education plans grew for the fifth straight year. That it's more than 20% higher than the state [00:19:00] average and graduation rates for students who are or who have ever been English language Learners improved from 83.3 percent. In 2016-17 to a hundred percent in 2017 18. Thank you. and just again to point out the goals that we have are the ones that we take seriously and we're working on on a daily basis and on a yearly basis and we're always glad to see when the dial improvements were making can change the lives of our. Speaking of which I want to recognize two bolt and secretaries. Michelle Nelson and Doreen I should have done how to pronounce icily isolate. Sorry, Michele and Doreen are friendly and welcoming to all who [00:20:00] come to our school. They are valued members of the community each of them adding beautiful energy and. Built in primary school would not be the wonderful place. It is without them. We're grateful for their professionalism and their living contributions to our school community and I just want to recognize their value to our school district today and particularly to the Bolton Community with that I will turn to dr. Linda. So I think the graphic you were referencing chair pitch is right there on the on the left and I want to thank our communication director Andrew kill system for capturing those a compliment accomplishments. So beautifully it really is a testament to our work pre-k through. That these kinds of results don't just happen in the four years of high school that it's an accumulation of hard work on the [00:21:00] part of our students incredible support by their parents talented staff a circle of support culminating in the statistics you see up there and thank you for noting. That growth also with our students who are served through an individual education plan on IEP. That's exactly what we mean by Leading for all and closing those opportunity and achievement gaps. How do we continue to look at our data and to think about all. And how we can adjust our instruction as well as any barriers that might be there to serve all students. So that was a tremendous result to get as a school district and to continue knowing that we haven't arrived but to continue doing that work on behalf of all children. We continue to work forward with our health and wellness renewal. We had a very well attended Community Health and Wellness Forum [00:22:00] last month in this same room, very well-attended appreciate all those who came out and participated. Fully participated civilly participated. It really was a constructive conversation in many regards and we were able to collect a lot of good information from that conversation additionally as many of you have had conversations. So have staff made themselves available to emails and phone calls and meeting with parents and tonight is then again at the presentation back to the board with our plan. So on the same day that Kurt Schrader invited us to hear him at his town hall so did President. Dr. Tim Cook from CCC invite us over to Clackamas Community College and we had to divide and conquer. So again, thank you to dr. Pryor. And director Molitor for attending with representative Chris Schrader and then [00:23:00] dr. Sorenson and dr. Downs and I went and heard. Dr. Tim Cook as a new president of CCC gives the state of college address and it was very encouraging and inspiring and great example again of the. We've been meeting often as a group of superintendents with dr. Cliff we meet monthly and again have a meeting set up in March 13th, just with the topic of aligning our high school programs our educational Pathways with ccc's guided Pathways thinking about K12 then also things about post high and how students can see a clear articulation in those Pathways of interest between institutions. So we're looking forward to that. We continue with our high school program renewal. We've talked with you about this how we actually started last year with the superintendent study. And as we're looking to expand high school learning spaces. We also are creating that lift in program renewal across [00:24:00] all three high schools. So we continue to meet with that Core group of teachers. We had a session in January thinking again about program course expansion CTE. How that then would connect to school day and internships we're continuing that work at our next work session is March 19. So this will be a core group of teachers and we keep expanding that Circle, but then also there are group that goes back with their principles and continues that message in their schools and will continue that work over the course of the year. Thank you for attending the bond seven. Most of you have mentioned that also in this room on Saturday. We had over 200 people representing a diverse group. We had teachers we had staff students Community leaders Community Partners elected officials. It really was a diverse group. Someone brought their baby. Which was I think the Highlight baby Orion I think stole the show, [00:25:00] but it was a great reminder that we're also here thinking forward to children who aren't even in our district yet who aren't alive on our planet yet and yet, you know, we think forward about the kinds of buildings and constructions and facilities and institutions that we need to plan for for children who aren't even here yet. So it was great to have a baby in the room. Great group that engage in conversation about both program that want that folks in our community want to see continue in our schools and then the kinds of facilities that they believe we should prioritize an account for and plan for over the next five to six years. We're going to put that information together for both long range planning committee and you as a school board, so you'll have that information synthesized. This seems like a long time ago. I went to this conference because we had to be canceled our last meeting but on February 1st and 2nd a [00:26:00] group of teachers in the district and leaders attended a Walla the Oregon Association of Latino administrator. The highest attendance in the conference history. I think there must have been for 500 people there very well attended. It's a growing conference and I don't know if you recognize that speaker, but Edna Lizbeth Chavez who was one of the speakers in the March on Washington High School student. Spoke spoke as a Latina as a student of color and again asking that we always. This great experience of all students in education and thinking about safety, of course for students. That was the context of why she spoken Washington DC but her talk to all of us was thinking about the high school experience for all students which led to the last slide Curtis. If you can show that last slide a group of our students then this is one of the Highlight breakout sessions of the conference [00:27:00] was a group of our students as a student panel. Sharing very courageously very honestly about their experience as students of color in a predominantly white school district and white high school and where things are going well for them and also where we can continue to make improvements and it was really touching breakout session for me to attend. First of all, so proud of our students and also proud that in front of that group. They would also share very honestly. Where we were doing well and where we were falling short in some regards and so an opportunity for all of us to take note and then to generalize those narratives across all schools so that we could pay attention to their story. So those are some highlights from the last month. Thank you very much. But takes us to the consent agenda. Do I have a motion? I will move that the board [00:28:00] adopt the consent agenda. Miss Douglas. connect to my little boy. Yes character. Excuse me. My sister Heights I can fetch. Director Reynolds. I jacked a king Martin. Dr. Ludwig. And this time I'm going to invite our partners with the Clackamas ESD a superintendent jata, Ripley and Linda is the to come on up and share the education service plan that they have for our school district. Thank you. Both for being here on a cold night. Good evening chair fish board members superintendent Ludwig. I [00:29:00] have with me chair Linda Brown from the Clackamas ESD bored sitting in your audience. We have John. I'm in Glen Mills Greg Mackenzie. So we you have you see us all here tonight. So thank you very much for taking some time. When did you want to talk about that first? First of all on behalf of the ESG board. I want to congratulate you all on tremendous success this last year your statistics and not just graduation rates, but the way that you are. Caring for children in West Linn and Wilsonville is truly wonderful and because you also have some really outstanding artists you all have a post card given to you and this is an opportunity for you to come and enjoy our art show last year. We had over 300 entrance from across Clackamas County. Of course yours were terrific and it's an opportunity for you to meet the [00:30:00] students meet their parents. See some. Really amazing artwork and celebrate the students. So we hope you can come. Every year the SC board members join me as we go out to each district. It's the only ESD in the state that continue to do these face-to-face visits and I like to I know you have a large agenda tonight. So I want to be fairly brief is we have with us the local service plan as well as our annual service report. And before I say anything about our annual report on our local service plan. What I would like to do is draw your attention to page. And what I want to say is I want to express our gratitude and thanks to your stuff. Our advisory committees would not be the same without their input. They work hard to be a part of that whether it's Barb so soon. It's Jennifer Spencer. I moves. [00:31:00] We have Andrew working with us and communication Curtis working in technology. And Tim is also working in terms of facilities. So when you come to the table with all of those advisories, it's often as a thought partner with us and is an in the learning exercise for others to hear what you do. So as I say that this is how the process has worked. I also I can't do this without doing this. I was going to save it for last your superintendent is one that I not only admire, but I appreciate the help because she has a busy District to run. District for running that she took time when we developed a countywide after-school program for middle school and Kathy took the lead with the superintendent's to be able to do that as well as with the County Commissioners. So I so appreciate that and thank you for that Kathy as you look at this local service plan. It's [00:32:00] something that's a year-long process. We started in the fall with the advisories. It was presented by each one of my leaders in their area to the superintendent's in both November and December and they voted on it. We then started our journey out which with each school district and you we saved the best for last. Here we are. What I wanted to say is two things this year. We are in barking on a special education audit that is a program audit not only to look at the quality of work that we do within those programs, but also look at efficiency. I know that's something that's pretty important to you as a board not only to look at our special education programs, but also our student delivery model and we will be doing that this year. I want to say that we will culminate again in May with our budget meeting and last year chair Fitch joined us and we hope that you can join us again this year. It was nice to [00:33:00] have you there. So and it's on May 22nd. So that's my next commercial first. We get the art show and then we get the budget committee, but I just wanted to say that you continue to be a good partner in our Equity Series in our professional learning in our special education. And that's what I see is the partnership that the ESD brings in our local service plan. Is that work we do together. So really I would like to close their and ask if anyone has any questions. Into in point out there page now, so it's just a comment. I just want to thank you for your excellent delivery of service including the much needed special education services and for the collaborative way that you develop our local service plan, and and I especially wanted to call you a call out gratitude for your leadership in forecast 5. I think it's going to be a powerful [00:34:00] analytics analytic tool for this district and throughout the Clackamas region in measuring our outcomes and making critical budget decisions. So I just am deeply grateful for the collaborative way at that that you provide your services to make this very much Betty. I want to tell you that they're all busy all the business managers are busy learning in the forecast 5 in the Mary area. It's that they're doing that and so some days they're throwing up their hands going. How are we going to all get this together? But that's another teamwork effort. So. And I also want to point out if you wanted to look on the annual report. You're on page 46 and 47. I don't have any questions either but I do want to State how I can see the work that you're doing integrated throughout the work that we're doing in our district [00:35:00] and how. There's a number of times where I have issues brought to me by parents and I can say we're working at that. Not only at the district level, but the Clackamas ESD is working on that as a County Wide effort, and we just invaluable support for our district, and we appreciate the collaboration. Thank you very much. We appreciate you and I'll let you get on with the meeting. Thank you. Thank you. So I'd like to move approval of the 2019 2020 Clackamas ESD local service plan for the Westland Wilsonville School District as presented. I'll second. discussion. Reagan Molitor. Yes, Dylan hides. I Ginger fetch Betty Reynolds. I Chelsea [00:36:00] King Martin. Thank you. Thank you very much. I was remiss in not earlier providing my disclaimer. I'm a local attorney. I represent students and parents in the district on occasion. If a matter comes before the board that materially benefits one of my clients, I will abstain from participating in the discussion or decisions on the matter without identifying the identity of my. Let's just get even in our date witnessed of view to petition on a budget committee and we have position number 1 and position number four available each update position surf at three years home in front of you. You will see their phone application and resume we witness a motion from you to see Lester too tough panelists to few update to Patricia. [00:37:00] The voting process for the committee members will be the each board member selects two applicants that you desire to be on the committee. I will ask each member to announce those selections will do it in the same order that we just provided aboard reports on if there are two clear applicants based on the number of votes or one clear. We'll ask for a formal motion for those applicants to take the numbered positions then we will vote. If there's a tie we'll deal with it. So just quick question if we have any of these applicants and attendance in the audience, are we going to ask them you should I think sorry there's a lot going on tonight. If there are any of the committee members are applicants. You're welcome to stay for come forward and. an address the board. Paris. [00:38:00] I good evening. Thank you chair Fitch board members and superintendent Ludwig. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to speak to you this evening about my application for the Westland Wilsonville budget committee. I come to this position with a wide variety of experiences and expertise as a health care professional. I have extensive knowledge of the complexities of budgets Healthcare primarily, but I believe it as a skill set that would transfer my work with the organization has Associated has given me many opportunities to work with Administration to balance and adjust budgets to meet patient care and staffing needs both within and without collective bargaining agreements. I have a wealth of experience with Workforce Development college career Readiness through that same work with Owen. I want to be on the budget committee to be able to bring a more diverse Viewpoint to the finances and budget of the school district being a parent in this District. I believe deeply in fiscal responsibility and fiscal creativeness. I also have a low value Above All Else making sure that there are Provisions in our budget for the health and mental health for. I believe that the work that I have done both with the [00:39:00] Oregon Nurses Association and with the organ Center for Nursing of which I'm a board member and finance committee member and my recent completion of my master's degree in executive leadership have more than adequately prepared me to take on this role as well. I appreciate you considering my application and know that if I was appointed to this committee, I would be an excellent fit. Thank you. Thank you any others. Okay, just wait. I'll bring it down for you. Okay, John McCabe. Do we have to give her address at this time? No, okay. Thank you. Okay, many of the people in the community would have benefited from. The other added items I have done. I've been on the committee's for the last three local option. I've been on the last three Bond committees all three elections were [00:40:00] successful. The last time I was on the budget committee some of the things I looked at that I felt that we needed to change one was. For Core Curriculum classes such as are extra band choir, there should not be a fee on the time. I was not on on the budget committee it continued but thanks to the change in the board composition that fee no longer exists, which is the proper thing in addition. Thanks to the hiring of the new CFO. We have a different presentation. In our budget, which I was asking for certain items were going under special revenue between the auditor and Miss Hughes. It was like no that's not where it belongs. It belongs in with the regular budget, which is what I had requested is that it stayed in a section of the general fund balance. [00:41:00] Even though I was told that I was wrong. I've been proven I was right. And so what I'm trying to do to go forward and the only reason why I'm asking for to be an appointment to this position is we are running into issues. We are the open enrollment students were significant in our district. And now that that law no longer exists for open enrollment. We are starting to get we will be getting during this term of three years a large drop. In the Westland portion of the school district. He'll cause severe problems for budgeting. So it'll be tough decisions. A lot of them put one of the things this lost for this year is to look at things like that is you need to start as other school districts with having work sessions much earlier in the year glass out opportunity last couple years. I [00:42:00] hope if I'm appointed. That's one thing we can look at. Is having work sessions to try to address these issues as at least in the City Westland when we start losing the Open Enrollment students, there will be consequences that we need to budget for that may change substantially what the schools look like today. And as for mental health, there's a lot of things like that such as I guess one thing. I have seen more recently is the amount of bullying that occurs even between our staff and our students and it's unfortunate. And the time and commitment that is needed from staff to address. Sometimes a bully doesn't know they're being a bully and. we have to Think Through The Eyes of a child. If they see use the bully you're a bully. [00:43:00] And hopefully I'll be successful at being appointed to one of the two positions. Thank you. So we're George anafi the two. I'd like to. Identifies the two people who appeared Jordan Ferris and John McCabe. and I'm a Christian Wyatt and Craig Nelson. I would like to nominate Kirsten Wyatt and Jordan Ferris. I just [00:44:00] want to say that materials that we were given were really impressive. I mean, these are for people that I mean for a volunteer position to get this quality of applicants all four of them. It's a tough choice any of them would do fine. I'm sure I'm going to nominate Kirsten Wyatt and Craig nail. I would concur with those comments. I would nominate Jordan Ferris and Craig Nelson. Do we have a will be patient? And will you help us? What are the two positions we have? What are their numbers? Number one and number four? Thank. And I should note that those both have that ate the same length of term. Yes, there's no distinguishing difference. But we are using the position numbers to [00:45:00] prevent future problems like weeping. Give us just a moment. So for those of you who are along the edge, there are seats up in the front and in throughout and if people want to squish and make it easier for people to set that's my preference that we have people sitting tonight, and I'll let you know that there are bathrooms down the hallway and to your right and also bathrooms back closer here. So chair Fitch? Your you have three votes for Jordan Ferris motions for Jordan Harris 3 for Christian Christian Wyatt and three for Craig Nelson. Well that works. So well, please direct them. So I we haven't really had much of a discussion and mine is more just. Because we're in public setting we haven't really talked amongst ourselves. And this is and I actually have this conversation [00:46:00] with Jordan Ferris as well. It's not it's not a vision about her but it is about potentially a practice that we as a board had been using oftentimes we have numbers. Or individuals who seek to get involved at the district level and a couple of the ways to do that is either on a long range planning committee or our budget committee and I believe Jordan is that was exactly her intent was I want to get more involved in our school district. Here's an opening and she applied for. It just so happens. Then she also realized probably or was already exploring the fact that we also have openings on our school board and she has declared herself as a candidate for school board. My question for this board is I mean Chelsea was on the budget committee before she came under the school board Rob Fernanda. Same things on the budget committee. Thank him on the school board last election cycle. I think Grady Nelson had been serving already on our. Long range planning committee tree Moss to is [00:47:00] also ran for school board had already been serving on the long range planning my question for this board is and really like Dylan said all chemists are very well qualified in my reluctance to put Jordan in that particular position was around I would like to keep you fill these positions. Not continue to have individuals elected to the school board and then we reopen. I don't know. I don't know what the right answer is. I just wanted to I didn't know we as a board kind of had a practice around that or would want to give some thought to the longevity. It is a three-year position. It would be nice to have somebody consistently there. I mean arguably if you are put on the budget committee, and then you are elected to the school board School Board is a member of the budget committee. So you're not losing ground there. That was just something I personally was wrestling with and I didn't know if that had occurred to anybody else just for the [00:48:00] record Miss Ferris you have. Provided that you're a candidate, is that correct? Okay. Thank you. So I'm the reason I'm supporting Miss Ferris is because of her knowledge and experience in finance. Workforce Development College and Career Readiness her and professional development and especially her knowledge and commitment to health and mental health of students which is so vital to this district and so vital to student achievement and I understand the concern about. Her having filed for the school board, but we can't predict that outcome. And you know, hopefully we'll have a very robust collection and there would be more candidates. And again, we can't predict it. But to me that that speaks positively toward her it demonstrates her ongoing engagement with the [00:49:00] district. So even if she is elected should be able to fulfil this entire. Year essentially since the office would begin July first she'll be able to fulfill this. Budget cycle in the next cycle won't be for another year. So to me, I think it would provide excellent background and it would be a great orientation for should she be elected but if she is not successful in her camp in being elected. I think she'll be an excellent member of the budget committee because of that orientation toward health and mental health and background in finance and. I would second the idea that having somebody who is filed for school board also serve in this role and she's currently the only candidate filed their yes. It's nice to have people on the budget committee for three [00:50:00] years, although should Miss Ferris. And when that seat then she would have had the experience of having gone through a budget cycle one time prior to actually serving on the board and going through that process and she also just has the background that I think would make for a good budget Committee Member and while we're talking about our nominees and also just like to mention that with. Kirsten Wyatt while we do have four very qualified candidates. The thing that spoke to me about her application is her experience both with the Westland library as well as the work that you've done at the city of less Lynn, so she would have a background and you know a variety of Community Partners. So those are some of the reasons why I'll be voting for those two. No, I just might make a suggestion because it is it seems like the pool by this board has been narrowed to three. [00:51:00] Should we then engage in a nomination based on those three and see what happens. I was going to comment might actually talk to Miss Ferris about this. My concern is that if she were on the budget committee. And she wins re-election right now. I believe she's the only person has filed for it. That's five months from now. I don't know when he's three applicants are gonna be ready to jump in they may have other commitments. I'm going to be scrambling to find somebody to fill in these roles were as right now. We've got somebody for three other candidates who are willing to make a three-year commitment now regardless of the outcome of the school board election, so that's why I'll be voting for Miss Wyatt and mr. Nelson. And to make sure I was understanding that we would just go ahead and. what was your thought about proceeding? My thought is that we just renominate down the line based on the candidates being Kristen Wyatt Craig Nelson in Jordan Ferris same order. Dr. [00:52:00] Reynolds. Jordan Paris and Christian White. Kristen Wyatt Craig Nelson, Kirsten Wyatt and Jordan Ferris. Kirsten Wyatt and Craig Nelson. Miss Wyatt and mr. All right, Miss Douglas. So the two nominees are Kirsten. And Craig Kirsten Wyatt and Craig Nelson. Okay. Now, I need a [00:53:00] motion to appoint them to positions one and four. I'll move that we appoint Kristen Wyatt to position number one and that we appoint. Mr. Craig Nelson to position number for their second. I'll second. Megan Molitor. Yes, so and hides I can't think why Betty Reynolds Oh Chelsea King Martin. Thank you so much. I will say now the notification to the selected candidate and then we hope to have the budget orientation as soon at March 11. And I'd like to just Echo the board sentiments that it's so wonderful that we had for such capable people and willing to offer their time in this [00:54:00] volunteer position. So thank you to the four of you. If you did not get nominated for this service, we certainly have lots of other ways that you can be at work in the district and long range planning committee. And of course you've heard about the to school board opening, so please continue to put yourself forward in terms of ways to serve the school district. Thank you so much.
