I want to thank the the many people and individuals and groups that that I was able to meet with over the course of the month from January till now. 102 00:16:36.150 --> 00:16:40.199 WLWV Board Room: People just care about their schools. And it's just so clear that 103 00:16:40.240 --> 00:16:49.229 these are not grievance oriented people. These are people who just care about their schools and care about education. So I I appreciate that. And I look forward to continuing to hear those voices. 104 00:16:49.620 --> 00:17:10.319 WLWV Board Room: Well, one highlight I I I was able to visit one classroom of a Todd Jones at West on High School, right as he was retiring, and his last class of kids, that seniors were already gone. So these were the the mostly juniors in this class, and it he invited me just for the last couple of minutes, and the kids stayed around. They wanted to talk 105 00:17:10.750 --> 00:17:17.110 WLWV Board Room: and What I heard from the students is one. They want to be prepared 106 00:17:17.859 --> 00:17:25.130 WLWV Board Room: for whatever is next, and they don't know what's next, and they want to be prepared anyway. they want choice. 107 00:17:25.400 --> 00:17:30.480 WLWV Board Room: and they're excited to have some options next year for choice that they felt like they haven't had in the past. 108 00:17:30.600 --> 00:17:33.610 They want meaning. They want meaningful education. 109 00:17:34.010 --> 00:17:37.159 WLWV Board Room: and they want parking. But they're going to 110 00:17:37.200 --> 00:17:47.100 WLWV Board Room: and and that's that. That's what that that fits with what I've heard from parents over the course of the last 6 months, and so I'm I'm grateful to hear it straight from kids to that's it. 111 00:17:48.570 --> 00:17:49.590 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 112 00:17:49.920 --> 00:18:19.239 WLWV Board Room: And I'll you an apology for saying, Shoot maker! it's it I still, I'm haunted by that last name, because when we played Uc. Davis in college. There was a wide receiver named Shoemaker, and he torched us, and every time he scored they throw shoes onto the field. So when I see that name. I still go back to those moments, so I know it's Schumacher. I apologize it. It it's shoemaker, but I I promise that I will not in any way torch you because I I got it right. I lacked those. I lack those skills. 113 00:18:19.260 --> 00:18:20.100 So I 114 00:18:20.410 --> 00:18:42.199 WLWV Board Room: thank you. next up Director Wyatt. They may throw shoes at you, I guess, depending on how this goes. But I just wanted to mention that if folks haven't had a chance to drive by the new Athe Creek Middle School or drive by and see the new sign for Riverside High School. 115 00:18:42.200 --> 00:19:09.179 WLWV Board Room: both things will just give you goose bumps with excitement, because it's so exciting to see the progress that's being made, because both of those schools open this fall, and I've talked to some people in the community that think that we have another year. And no, it's happening. It's happening this fall. and it's really exciting to just see those schools coming together. And to think about the new communities that are going to be built there. and I have to also just give a shout out to the Riverside Instagram account. 116 00:19:09.180 --> 00:19:33.669 They have done a wonderful job of really humanizing and introducing all of the teacher and teachers and staff who are there? It gives you a sense of all of the pride and excitement that that school will bring as well as all of the sports and activities, and then, of course, the Cte curriculum. So just If you get a chance, drive by those 2 locations and then give a riverside, a follow on Instagram, because they're doing a great job. 117 00:19:33.860 --> 00:19:34.670 WLWV Board Room: Thanks 118 00:19:36.630 --> 00:19:40.540 WLWV Board Room: you, Director Wyatt. And and you know, putting me in this role of leadership. So thank you. 123 00:20:15.750 --> 00:20:20.069 WLWV Board Room: I, too, have fun at graduation. 124 00:20:20.100 --> 00:20:35.650 WLWV Board Room: at Wilsonville High and at West Lynn and I actually kidnapped all the board members after one of the graduations and kind of took him on a field trip, and and they were a little bit surprised. So he said, Where are you taking us? So I didn't tell them. But 125 00:20:35.770 --> 00:20:46.789 WLWV Board Room: And we ended up having a really good time to celebrate graduation and my summer has been kind of low key. Before we do that, could I do my superintendent report? 128 00:21:22.800 --> 00:21:38.759 WLWV Board Room: I did just skip right over you did not. So you know, I we're gonna back up a little bit, and I'm gonna make some mistakes. By the way, today, everybody so be prepared for them. I'm sorry the superintendent report, Dr. Lugin, please. You have the 129 00:21:38.780 --> 00:21:41.950 WLWV Board Room: all right, so we'll just go to the. 130 00:21:42.020 --> 00:21:48.479 WLWV Board Room: So what have we been doing in July? You've been able to share some of what you've been up to. 131 00:21:48.680 --> 00:22:10.999 WLWV Board Room: Our biggest event in July with our students is actually summer school. And you're going to hear about that in a little bit. I've invited Dr. Prior to share a few pictures, and some of the highlights of summer school have very active, vibrant summer school with a K 5 program, a 6, 8, and then, of course, high school. So you'll learn a little bit more about that. But that's what's been keeping a lot of us busy. During July. 132 00:22:12.400 --> 00:22:35.029 WLWV Board Room: as you'll get to see through the consent agenda. We've also been hiring a lot of people, and so a lot of interviews screening meet and greets Hr then meets with folks who have been hired and gives them a little bit of an orientation, and so we've been hiring staff like crazy, so that they are in place and ready to go in August when we have a lot of our orientations. 133 00:22:35.480 --> 00:22:47.599 WLWV Board Room: and we're already preparing for August. So sometimes people wonder what happens in the summer. We're actually preparing for the fall very busily, so that when people come back. Things are in place. some of that does involve reviewing 134 00:22:47.680 --> 00:23:05.370 WLWV Board Room: some of our many documents or policies, making sure things are updated. we have recently updated our student rights and Responsibility Handbook. And I want to thank our Director of Communications, Andrew Kelstrom for leading that. And that Revised Handbook will be up and available to families right away. 135 00:23:05.430 --> 00:23:20.649 WLWV Board Room: in August. we're reviewing our community use facilities just to see how we're doing in terms of serving the community and making spaces available. And what the rental fees are, and just whether we have good, clear communication about our facilities. 136 00:23:21.050 --> 00:23:42.950 WLWV Board Room: and then something new for us that you we might share a little bit more with you as we go along. But we're starting a new program called Smart Start in August. This is for students with who are served with an Iep individualized education program or on a 5 or 4 plan. So it's through special education and additional opportunity for them to meet their teacher 137 00:23:43.320 --> 00:24:12.640 WLWV Board Room: and their case manager before school starts. So sometimes when you think about the ice cream, social or the Popsicle social. Sometimes that's the first time teachers get to see their students and vice versa. It can feel very busy and low hectic. And then the first day of school sometimes feels a little overwhelming. So the intention with this is for students to have kind of a quieter, calm, more individualized opportunity for some meet and greet So we're getting ready for that new program as well. 138 00:24:14.830 --> 00:24:21.940 WLWV Board Room: And one of the other reviews that we're doing, that we want to give you a heads up on is about our bus routes. 139 00:24:22.090 --> 00:24:24.650 WLWV Board Room: and as we all know. 140 00:24:24.670 --> 00:24:45.849 WLWV Board Room: across the nation there is still a school bus driver shortage Just the other day, as I was driving around as in a different school district area, and soft bus drivers out with their signs, and some of our folks picture shows some of our out folks out recruiting trying to find drivers for this next school year. 141 00:24:46.740 --> 00:25:16.379 WLWV Board Room: we also know that wages have increased and gas prices have gone up. So part of the review that we're doing this summer is to review that contract with first student make sure it's still is competitive in terms of what our neighboring school districts are offering and in line with competitive wages, so that we can retain our good drivers and also be able to recruit effectively. So the review is considering those components. 142 00:25:16.840 --> 00:25:32.809 WLWV Board Room: We also reviewing our bus routes because we're opening a new high school. And so part of that means getting some busing options for students, which means taking a look at our high school routes, which means. Then taking a look at middle school and primary. So it's been a good summer 143 00:25:33.070 --> 00:25:36.459 WLWV Board Room: for us to get out maps and look at bus stops. 144 00:25:36.470 --> 00:25:56.509 WLWV Board Room: Sometimes. What happens is, we add, stops because of certain circumstances, and then, when those circumstances go away, we sometimes forget to take those off the route. So we end up with routes that have probably more redundancy than they need to, or too many stops in too short of a span of space. 145 00:25:56.520 --> 00:26:08.149 WLWV Board Room: And where can we be more efficient, but also watching distance for students in terms of walking to a stop, of course, working with safe routes and our walking boundary. 146 00:26:08.330 --> 00:26:32.279 WLWV Board Room: and we're hoping that through this review, as we look at some more efficiencies, that all of this helps us think about how many buses we actually need, but also making sure routes. are more consistent and more timely in terms of punctuality and getting to stops on time and then building a little more space between the primary route, the middle, the high school route and the middle school route. 147 00:26:32.660 --> 00:26:48.279 WLWV Board Room: so that's a review that we're working on right now, and any changes that are made, we'll be sure to get those communicated to families. as soon as we can in early August, so that they have some weeks to adjust if there's any changes. 148 00:26:50.660 --> 00:27:02.680 WLWV Board Room: and then as I mentioned to the previous board, and I will do with this board each month. I'm going to provide a monthly update on where we are with our K 5 literacy renewal process. 149 00:27:02.860 --> 00:27:05.690 WLWV Board Room: I'm gonna pass this down. 150 00:27:05.710 --> 00:27:07.960 WLWV Board Room: director, beat off, you can take one. And 151 00:27:09.020 --> 00:27:27.130 WLWV Board Room: so this should start to become familiar. This is the timeline. You'll probably collect a number of these over the course of the year. but it shows the where we are in the year and each month kind of the key activities that are happening with the literacy renewal process. 152 00:27:29.400 --> 00:27:31.450 WLWV Board Room: And so next slide 153 00:27:33.080 --> 00:27:38.359 WLWV Board Room: you'll see on the timeline. And I've just made a copy of that up on the screen. 154 00:27:38.500 --> 00:27:45.149 we didn't have any activities for July. So I'm just going to show you June again where we left off. 155 00:27:45.530 --> 00:27:49.679 WLWV Board Room: you can see it circled there and then on the next slide. 156 00:27:50.950 --> 00:27:57.860 WLWV Board Room: One of the activities we did in June was to make sure that we had our literacy adoption team in place. 157 00:27:58.290 --> 00:28:08.289 WLWV Board Room: and that group has been selected with representatives from each school you can see the criteria. They are at K. One, a. 2, 3, a 4, 5, teacher from each school. 158 00:28:08.480 --> 00:28:11.859 in addition to at least one learning specialist from each school. 159 00:28:12.720 --> 00:28:21.489 WLWV Board Room: and then an eld teacher. also. So that team has been put together. 160 00:28:22.300 --> 00:28:25.869 WLWV Board Room: worked really hard to get that done before folks left for the summer. 161 00:28:27.690 --> 00:28:32.740 WLWV Board Room: The other thing that we did in June. You'll see it on the timeline as well as this 162 00:28:32.780 --> 00:28:45.209 WLWV Board Room: I mentioned of it. Here we sent a district team to the Institute for multi-sensory education training. This was hosted by the Clacomus, Esd. So there are a few other school districts there. That was June 26 to the thirtieth. 163 00:28:45.560 --> 00:28:48.140 WLWV Board Room: so that training has been completed. 164 00:28:48.760 --> 00:28:58.110 WLWV Board Room: and both Dr. Soyson and Dr. Prior have met with the team who went. They had a couple of days at least 2 sessions of debrief 165 00:28:58.190 --> 00:29:00.530 WLWV Board Room: with members of 166 00:29:00.670 --> 00:29:12.550 WLWV Board Room: of the team that went for the training. What were the lessons? Learned? What was the training? taking a lot of notes, documenting the key components and putting together? 167 00:29:12.770 --> 00:29:20.709 WLWV Board Room: the evidence from that and the findings and the key components that they want to then share 168 00:29:20.780 --> 00:29:23.180 WLWV Board Room: with the literacy renewal team. 169 00:29:23.280 --> 00:29:31.410 WLWV Board Room: So what did a few learn from this session that they want to make sure the whole team hears about. So they're working on that right now 170 00:29:33.410 --> 00:29:52.849 WLWV Board Room: and then. Next slide, just a reminder that we did in our budget. Allocate funds to hire 6 literacy coaches and those staff were hired before we ended the school year. So I want to thank again Dr. Soyson and Dr. Prior for all the interviews that went into that process. 171 00:29:53.700 --> 00:30:01.150 WLWV Board Room: and these are highly experienced professional, some of them from the district, some that we recruited, or who came to us from outside the district. 172 00:30:01.460 --> 00:30:08.020 WLWV Board Room: some who are bilingual or with experience, with dual language and English language, development, special education. 173 00:30:08.980 --> 00:30:17.370 WLWV Board Room: and these 6 coaches, literacy coaches will either have or will be working towards their reading endorsements 174 00:30:17.800 --> 00:30:20.440 WLWV Board Room: if they don't already have it or have it completed. 175 00:30:22.260 --> 00:30:23.570 WLWV Board Room: and then 176 00:30:24.170 --> 00:30:31.010 WLWV Board Room: as just a reminder of where we go forward. So here we you can see August all the way through. Then the march. 177 00:30:31.060 --> 00:30:46.089 WLWV Board Room: completion, and we'll work through this timeline each month with you as a board. But again, you can see that we've got some workshops that we're getting ready for in August. And then again, as teachers come back, 178 00:30:46.460 --> 00:30:58.079 WLWV Board Room: and then we continue to want to make available this opportunity for parents to get input, and that is built in there between October and February, we will have opportunities for parent input that will create in the process 179 00:30:58.860 --> 00:31:00.290 WLWV Board Room: and the next slide. 180 00:31:02.060 --> 00:31:05.699 WLWV Board Room: and then this is well, back there we go. 181 00:31:06.060 --> 00:31:09.790 WLWV Board Room: And then this, this is just that reminder that 182 00:31:10.210 --> 00:31:19.120 WLWV Board Room: we're still on track for March of 2,024 for the board to approve. the final adoption of curriculum materials 183 00:31:22.250 --> 00:31:32.630 WLWV Board Room: the next slide. So just as a reminder as we go into this next year that while this adoption, with this renewal and adoption process is going on. 184 00:31:32.910 --> 00:31:53.119 WLWV Board Room: we will have kids entering classrooms will have teachers working with children and we can't have nothing for them to work with, so they will continue to use the materials that we have. Teachers will continue to provide literacy instruction daily, 120 min through their readers and writers. workshop structure that they have. 185 00:31:53.420 --> 00:31:56.609 WLWV Board Room: they'll continue to 186 00:31:57.250 --> 00:32:01.669 WLWV Board Room: craft their instruction in a way that includes the 5 pillars of Literacy. 187 00:32:02.300 --> 00:32:09.530 WLWV Board Room: just a reminder. Those include phonemic awareness and phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. 188 00:32:10.950 --> 00:32:17.030 WLWV Board Room: and that the teachers will continue to use the Lucy Caucins units of study as the core materials. 189 00:32:17.170 --> 00:32:20.579 WLWV Board Room: and they'll continue to use spontaneous and put out word study 190 00:32:21.150 --> 00:32:26.759 WLWV Board Room: as the supplemental materials for specific work around phonics and dynamic awareness. 191 00:32:28.000 --> 00:32:34.340 WLWV Board Room: And just a note on that it. It was brought to my attention that I inadvertently in one of my 192 00:32:34.540 --> 00:32:48.099 WLWV Board Room: updates to the board. I don't remember which month made the mistake of saying that the fontest and panel supplemented your supplemental materials were adopted by the board. They weren't The board doesn't adopt 193 00:32:48.230 --> 00:32:55.189 WLWV Board Room: often the supplemental materials, but they were selected as supplements to the Lucy Caucins units. 194 00:32:55.720 --> 00:32:57.859 WLWV Board Room: so just wanted to correct that comment. 195 00:32:59.020 --> 00:33:12.350 WLWV Board Room: and teachers will continue to use. a variety of assessments. Some of you have asked last year about which assessments we use with our Literacy program. Several board members were able to observe classroom instruction 196 00:33:12.460 --> 00:33:16.749 WLWV Board Room: in some of our schools and the application of some of our 197 00:33:16.800 --> 00:33:21.220 WLWV Board Room: assessments. So we have with early literacy skills, Ames Webb. 198 00:33:21.480 --> 00:33:29.790 WLWV Board Room: more frequent and interim assessments to check on reading and comprehension skills. We have the benchmark assessment and Nba map. 199 00:33:29.820 --> 00:33:39.950 WLWV Board Room: And then, of course, the summative assessment at the end of each year. which assesses grade, level standards and proficiencies, which is the Osas, the State assessment. 200 00:33:40.600 --> 00:33:58.579 WLWV Board Room: So teachers will continue to use these materials next year, focusing also very heavily on high quality instruction. They'll have that workshop in August, and then in the fall to home their literacy instruction skills while we're going through the process of the renewal 201 00:34:00.710 --> 00:34:02.420 WLWV Board Room: in the next slide. 202 00:34:02.590 --> 00:34:06.780 WLWV Board Room: I'm gonna ask David, Prior to come up and give us some highlights 203 00:34:06.850 --> 00:34:08.420 WLWV Board Room: about summer school. 204 00:34:15.780 --> 00:34:17.760 WLWV Board Room: Thank you, Dr. Ludwig. Well. 205 00:34:18.179 --> 00:34:33.240 WLWV Board Room: Kurt is getting our slides to go, and I want to welcome our new directors, Director Vidal and director Shoemaker. Thank you for joining our board, and welcome to the rest of our board for a summer meeting. It's my pleasure to actually represent the work of a lot of other great 206 00:34:33.571 --> 00:34:50.169 WLWV Board Room: people who have put together our summer school program. We as you probably know, we offer summer school. It's a starts in upcoming first graders through high schoolers. And I'm just going to share with you some key elements of both the primary middle and then the high program. 207 00:34:50.219 --> 00:35:17.159 WLWV Board Room: So the primary and middle program are are highly aligned. We begin by thinking by thinking about the students who are in most need of support during the summer. And so our 3 goals are first to identify students and work really hard to close those opportunity gaps through highly engaging and fun project-based learning that has a really strong emphasis on literacy, language, art skills. 208 00:35:17.360 --> 00:35:21.920 WLWV Board Room: We are also identifying students who we can provide 209 00:35:21.930 --> 00:35:35.120 WLWV Board Room: COVID-19 recovery services. And these are students who have Iep and who we've made it determination that progress toward meeting these Ips was highly impacted by the pandemic. 210 00:35:35.370 --> 00:35:38.279 WLWV Board Room: And so we want to try to help accelerate their learning. 211 00:35:38.380 --> 00:36:05.159 WLWV Board Room: And then the other group, our students that benefit from extended school year services. And these are also students, some students with Ips who, we feel have made games and we worry. They might lose some of those gains over the summer, and so we provide services to help them maintain specifically in the areas of language arts. So those are the 3 groups that we're we're really thinking strongly about in our Equity oriented summer school program next slide, please. 212 00:36:06.520 --> 00:36:34.730 WLWV Board Room: So we just wanted to give you a sense of All the planning and logistics that go into primary and middle summer school. our team staff, who teach these to take about a partial week off after packing up their classrooms, and then they join together and begin teaching summer school. So we're in the third week right now. Summer school consist of 12, half days, 3 h days for students, over 3 weeks, and we work over the July Fourth holiday week, which is why we get into this a 5 last 5 day week. Here. 213 00:36:34.860 --> 00:36:51.359 WLWV Board Room: we have reached out specifically and made personal invitations and invited 336 students in grades, one through 5 from all 9 primary schools. And they attend. We consolidate the program at Boone's very primary school 214 00:36:51.710 --> 00:37:11.090 WLWV Board Room: at Middle level. We've invited and and serve 283 students. And these are students who are entering grades 6 through 8 across all 4 middle schools, and they attend Meridian Cree By consolidating the locations we're able to bring together resources to provide the best quality experience, as you'll see in a 215 00:37:11.090 --> 00:37:24.389 WLWV Board Room: well, actually, in this slide, too, I just want to jump right down that we do provide busing. for student, did the heroic task of of identifying how to get all students who want to participate from all corners of the district to the central locations. 216 00:37:24.510 --> 00:37:58.460 WLWV Board Room: we have our own teachers who are the main educators, and they are supported by learning specialists, counselors, eld specialists. speech, language, pathologist, instructional coordinators, parent educators, and administrative assistance. So this is all run by Wesley Wilson Bill Staff, except for a couple of primary teaching positions where we just couldn't recruit the last few teachers. So we posted positions and hired certified teachers from other districts in a couple of positions to help us out, and then breakfast and lunch is provided to any student that wants it 217 00:37:58.460 --> 00:38:00.599 WLWV Board Room: during the summer school program. 218 00:38:02.300 --> 00:38:20.929 WLWV Board Room: one thing I really wanted to highlight is, we have strong academic goals, and we want this to be a very inviting experience. We want students to come back every day and attend to the end. So we work very closely with Chris and our teachers to design curriculum. That's very inquiry based. 219 00:38:20.930 --> 00:38:43.949 WLWV Board Room: And so at the primary level. This is a picture of some of our younger students at the pond at crest, and they're using magnifying glasses to identify all the animals that you can find in pond water, and then they use this to then go back to the classroom and read books around science, and to have science discussions, and then practice their reading and writing directly related to what they were learning at the pond. 220 00:38:43.950 --> 00:39:07.720 WLWV Board Room: and if you want to to come back to primary school classrooms, bring some pond water into your classroom. It's incredibly effective. the middle school has put an incredible amount of time and effort into developing units of study that you can see listed here. which students self select based on their interest. So you can see by some of these titles, aviation, Academy, reading and writing poetry 221 00:39:07.720 --> 00:39:22.080 WLWV Board Room: lifelong fitness. Our our hope is to design something that intrigues everyone. So once again, students are really excited to come to school, feel like they have ownership over their learning and are working toward those literacy growth goals. 222 00:39:22.220 --> 00:39:40.590 WLWV Board Room: And we also we've been thinking a lot about dual language. So we do have dual language classrooms. in our summer school program. And we're also folding in eld support. And this is for those emerging bilinguals. to help accelerate their learning and ensure that they are able to participate in the program, too. 223 00:39:44.180 --> 00:40:08.420 WLWV Board Room: if you think about it from the lens of the student experience. we're working really hard to provide personalized, joyful classrooms. So the classes are small. students actually really like meeting kids from other schools. When we interview them, they often talk about how fun it was to make new friendships, and to get quite a bit of individualized one on one conferring and support from the staff that's there. 224 00:40:08.690 --> 00:40:21.690 WLWV Board Room: They're all experiencing hands on. I love that phrase minds on, and inquiry based learning. So, as you can see in these pictures, students are very actively engaged in the creation and discovery and inquiry. 225 00:40:21.790 --> 00:40:32.010 WLWV Board Room: and then along the way, as I was mentioned, what you would see in the classrooms is the integrated reading, writing, speaking, and listening into all of the course options and classes. 226 00:40:32.170 --> 00:41:00.669 WLWV Board Room: the teachers are very, very sensitive to that. These are the students that we want to welcome and and feel the most supported. So social, emotional learning, strong and caring relationships are part of how they're planning and teaching. And then there's this really strong emphasis on, we need to have outcome measurable outcome and skills. So we're really thinking around those decoding, reading, writing, producing skills that we like students to develop as a result of attending summer school 227 00:41:02.530 --> 00:41:24.079 WLWV Board Room: next slide, please, and these are some quotes from our primary and middle school programs that might give you a little flavor of how students are experiencing. Summer school is a lot of fun. We visited the pond at Crest. We've been learning about capitalizing certain words and learning about the vowels every time we do our work we get fuzzy, and then we get to celebrate by having a little extra recess. 228 00:41:24.880 --> 00:41:44.769 WLWV Board Room: And another quote. I like everything about Middle school, summer and learning program, including making new friends, the teachers lunch, singing, dancing, learning, and fun. So our hope is in putting these quotes, you would get to see how we're trying to bring together a very inviting fun experience for students that is also highly academically oriented. 229 00:41:46.030 --> 00:41:47.579 WLWV Board Room: Next slide, please. 230 00:41:47.850 --> 00:42:01.800 WLWV Board Room: We also have our high school program, which you may be more familiar with, because I think it has a longer history in our district. And again, the purpose and the goals is to close opportunity gaps with credit recovery and concentrated learning opportunities. 231 00:42:01.830 --> 00:42:08.840 WLWV Board Room: And again that goal I mentioned last time, providing COVID-19 recovery services. So the 232 00:42:08.880 --> 00:42:20.000 WLWV Board Room: I was just when I was writing this thinking. Next year we'll have 3 high schools up here, but currently it's provided at both our comprehensive High Schools, Westland and Wilsonville High School. It is also a morning half day program. 233 00:42:20.060 --> 00:42:28.979 WLWV Board Room: Not many, not as many of our high school students need transportation, but we don't want that to be a barrier. So if if it's needed, we do provide busing to the high school program. 234 00:42:30.890 --> 00:42:47.969 WLWV Board Room: So here's a little snapshot of participation. At each high school at Wesley we have 110 students enrolled. some of those are intending in person credit recovery classes, and some students are participating in online credit completion through our online academy. 235 00:42:48.360 --> 00:43:05.499 WLWV Board Room: there's also an in person, go ahead trigonometry class which I could have certainly benefited from in my high school days, and then in Wilsonville High School there are 97 students enrolled there in person, credit, recovery classes and language, arts, math and history. 236 00:43:05.560 --> 00:43:13.920 WLWV Board Room: online credit recovery classes and biology and physics. So you can see they're trying to offer a range of opportunities for engagement and participation. 237 00:43:13.950 --> 00:43:40.000 WLWV Board Room: There's also online credit completion and the online academy. And then some students are enrolled in work experience, credit opportunities. So it's a really wide range of opportunities here. And I love this next quote, which comes from one of our instructors, and you can imagine, if you were hearing this as a student or getting to say it as a teacher, which is to a student congratulations, you know, through participating in summer school you successfully completed your final language, ours class, or in your diploma. 238 00:43:40.000 --> 00:43:55.959 WLWV Board Room: I'm so proud of you for completing this course and reaching graduate status. So that's a pretty powerful outcome of participation in summer school that came from Dr. Christine Baldwin, who helps facilitate. She's one of our wk coordinators for high school. 239 00:43:56.950 --> 00:44:18.959 WLWV Board Room: And then again, I I'm standing up here representing a lot of hours and planning and tinkering from many, many people. First of all, I just want to thank all of our summer school teachers, I think, finishing up school and agreeing. I'm joyfully agreeing to attend to training a few days after school is out and setting up another classroom. I think it's an incredible 240 00:44:18.960 --> 00:44:41.620 WLWV Board Room: I don't know it just honors who they are and why they do this work. And then the leadership of summer school is an opportunity for our aspiring leaders to take on a project of high importance and run it from start to finish. And so at the primary level, we have instructional coordinators, Carrie Gobbins, Margaret Watman, Turner, T. R. Work a lot, and Jennifer Zielkle, who have planned and are running and are leading the program 241 00:44:41.660 --> 00:44:54.290 WLWV Board Room: at the middle level. We have our middle level mentor, Allison bond savage. our crest Coordinator Program Corner, Daniel Schroeder and Instructional coordinator for student services. Marian Watmanoshima 242 00:44:54.520 --> 00:45:13.010 WLWV Board Room: at the High School level. We have assisted principals Don Agren Jocelyn Mcintyre, and now I stronglyer, and our school counselor, Andre Abraham, who's also getting his administrators license. So he is an administrator intern for the program our nutrition services has been amazing in providing food 243 00:45:13.010 --> 00:45:36.540 WLWV Board Room: for all students. Every day our operations team is in the middle of closing down schools, starting projects, also building new classrooms and locating furniture so we can open it. one thing you'll never see is the work of our nursing team, who scrambles to review every child who's enrolled to make sure that we can meet all their health protocols because they're peanut allergies or or other things that we need to attend to. 244 00:45:36.540 --> 00:45:40.660 to make sure that health need is never a barrier to attending summer school. 245 00:45:41.030 --> 00:46:10.900 WLWV Board Room: Crest has performed miraculous work organizing units and materials, encouraging tadpoles to get into the pond so students can discover them. and Amy shower you saw one of those pictures has led countless countless classes every day at crest, and then our first unit partners have, or organized transportation from all corners of the district to the far corner to get to Boone's Ferry, and continues to adjust to make that happen. So I want to just 246 00:46:10.980 --> 00:46:17.779 WLWV Board Room: thank all these people helping participate and make this happen. And thank you for giving us a minute to celebrate all their great work. 247 00:46:19.200 --> 00:46:29.590 WLWV Board Room: thank you. 248 00:46:31.760 --> 00:46:45.229 WLWV Board Room: now i'll move on to the present agenda which will require board action. And we're going to start with the personnel report by Miss Shadow Walden, and she's our director of human resources. 249 00:46:46.370 --> 00:46:54.790 WLWV Board Room: I move that we approve the consent. Agenda. Oh. you know what? Yes, there's my second mistake. Yes, and then we need a second. 250 00:46:56.700 --> 00:46:57.929 WLWV Board Room: I second. 251 00:47:00.730 --> 00:47:01.890 WLWV Board Room: we call about 252 00:47:02.860 --> 00:47:06.230 WLWV Board Room: director. Shoemaker. 253 00:47:06.300 --> 00:47:08.479 WLWV Board Room: Yes, Chair Taylor. 254 00:47:11.020 --> 00:47:13.200 WLWV Board Room: Yes, vice chair. Why. 255 00:47:13.270 --> 00:47:14.739 WLWV Board Room: Hi, thank you. 256 00:47:22.870 --> 00:47:30.939 WLWV Board Room: Now we'll go to it on to the personnel. Report. Miss Shiloh Waldron did I miss? Am I on the wrong screen? 257 00:47:30.960 --> 00:47:43.170 WLWV Board Room: I think you can go straight to public comment. Now. 258 00:47:44.290 --> 00:47:47.400 WLWV Board Room: I'm gonna quit using this screen, or else we're gonna be here all night. 259 00:47:55.350 --> 00:47:56.220 WLWV Board Room: Okay. 260 00:47:57.540 --> 00:48:03.090 WLWV Board Room: no public comment for business and general administration. 261 00:48:04.410 --> 00:48:10.669 WLWV Board Room: we got Dr. Soon. Hughes, is she she here? Oh, there you are. Thank you. 262 00:48:14.550 --> 00:48:20.879 WLWV Board Room: Good, even in board. Member. Dr. It's so nice to see all of you in person tonight. 263 00:48:21.220 --> 00:48:33.920 WLWV Board Room: So in front of us a resolution €2, 203. One resolution for decimating district officer plugged an 8 in. For the fiscal year 2,024, 264 00:48:34.150 --> 00:48:38.910 WLWV Board Room: so at required by status, the ball most approved 265 00:48:39.100 --> 00:48:48.189 WLWV Board Room: by resolution. It's designated officer authorized to do business with, addicted for the fiscal year 2,024. 266 00:48:48.290 --> 00:48:56.849 WLWV Board Room: So did resolution must only be one of the first items of business at a bore first meeting each year. 267 00:48:57.810 --> 00:49:06.580 WLWV Board Room: There is only one chain to the resolution compared to prior year, and that's it. A newspaper for legal in office. 268 00:49:06.610 --> 00:49:09.830 WLWV Board Room: So if you look at that on pay 2, 269 00:49:10.310 --> 00:49:14.970 WLWV Board Room: this I have in the Westland tiden, and this, and we've spoken 270 00:49:15.280 --> 00:49:43.940 WLWV Board Room: design at the new paper for the puppets in public office for fiscal year 2324. the district would like to add a Portland to beans newspaper as you know, because the Westland height, and and Brussels spokman both held a 5 day deadline but not published until Wednesday. The next one day or Thursday. So, therefore, where we have the Portland trib in 271 00:49:44.170 --> 00:49:52.460 WLWV Board Room: a newspaper, a public daily, and it's allowed us to meet the deadline for the butcher here in without any worry. 272 00:49:52.500 --> 00:49:54.540 WLWV Board Room: So with that 273 00:49:55.060 --> 00:50:12.229 WLWV Board Room: it's important for the Board to adopt this resolution, as they see our office on this to the public that the people and businesses that list this in this resolution authorized to interact with the district in an office. So capacity. 274 00:50:17.340 --> 00:50:22.689 WLWV Board Room: we have a motion to approve the resolution. 2,000 2,301 275 00:50:22.700 --> 00:50:28.949 WLWV Board Room: resolution designating district off officials, clerks, and agents for the 2,02324 school year 276 00:50:29.070 --> 00:50:30.330 WLWV Board Room: that still moved. 277 00:50:31.430 --> 00:50:32.410 WLWV Board Room: Have a second. 278 00:50:33.440 --> 00:50:34.660 WLWV Board Room: I'll second 279 00:50:36.060 --> 00:50:37.229 WLWV Board Room: all in favor. 280 00:50:40.120 --> 00:50:41.740 WLWV Board Room: Oh, you have to call. That 281 00:50:42.070 --> 00:50:50.620 WLWV Board Room: is that generally we would see if there is a question. Yes, we do. Are there any questions for Dr. Use? 282 00:50:52.850 --> 00:50:55.059 WLWV Board Room: No question, no questions. 283 00:50:55.610 --> 00:51:00.540 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 284 00:51:00.670 --> 00:51:04.680 WLWV Board Room: All right. Check, Taylor. 285 00:51:04.790 --> 00:51:07.349 WLWV Board Room: Yes. vice chair, Wyatt. 286 00:51:07.450 --> 00:51:10.179 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. Thank you so much. 287 00:51:10.660 --> 00:51:11.610 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 288 00:51:18.060 --> 00:51:28.159 WLWV Board Room: Dr. Barb, forcing. Excuse me. with the department of teacher and learning, teaching and learning. 289 00:51:30.650 --> 00:51:44.659 WLWV Board Room: Good evening and welcome director, shoemaker. do welcome, Director Vidal, and it's really going to be fun to present to this new board about this work we've been doing, and we'd like to be joined by 290 00:51:44.870 --> 00:52:12.669 WLWV Board Room: some of those who actually done the work on this. So if you'd clown up, I'd like to introduce those who will be talking about the work that we've been doing for several years on this curriculum renewal and adoption. As as you know, it takes a while for us to do this. to do this right. So this is Katie Canalis, and Katie is the Ld. Teacher or language specialist at Athy Creek and Rosemont Ridge, Middle Schools. 291 00:52:12.980 --> 00:52:19.010 rob Hoyington, Rob Hoisington is math teacher at Rosemont Ridge, Middle School. 292 00:52:19.090 --> 00:52:22.990 WLWV Board Room: Kenny Eubank, Kenny is principal at Meridian Creek. 293 00:52:23.000 --> 00:52:42.359 WLWV Board Room: Middle school, but he was math teacher at Westland High School, and has a a really deep math history, and he has been colliding this work, and Scott Mays, who's a learning specialist at Wood Middle School, and we're going to sing no 294 00:52:42.810 --> 00:52:44.620 WLWV Board Room: on once. 295 00:52:45.350 --> 00:52:48.010 WLWV Board Room: One thing that we discovered 296 00:52:48.300 --> 00:53:14.720 WLWV Board Room: in sort of the eagerness to clean up the room. Because this room gets used a lot. All the math materials that we're out at the back of the room, I think have been swept into the closet. It's like when company comes. We put things away. So we do have the actual materials here and Ken and can put them out. They have been in the boardroom for several weeks now, because there was an invitation to to come and view them. so we do have them here. 297 00:53:15.630 --> 00:53:16.360 WLWV Board Room: Thanks. 298 00:53:17.410 --> 00:53:18.390 So. 299 00:53:18.640 --> 00:53:32.699 WLWV Board Room: as you know, we use the words renewal and adoption, and the idea of the renewal is to look at what is it about the instruction that we're learning 300 00:53:33.400 --> 00:53:45.140 WLWV Board Room: from our data, from input from students about what we need to work on, because we look at getting a lens. So then we know we're ready to go look for materials. 301 00:53:45.440 --> 00:53:48.849 WLWV Board Room: So in this one all 302 00:53:48.870 --> 00:53:50.800 WLWV Board Room: teachers were involved. 303 00:53:51.460 --> 00:53:58.710 WLWV Board Room: every 6 to eighth grade math teacher. Prior to this, every high school teacher was involved. 304 00:53:58.980 --> 00:54:12.220 WLWV Board Room: When you have subject area teachers and secondary, you can actually do that because, you know, when when you pull all the teachers together. You have about 21 teachers, for example, across the middle level, who are the math teachers. 305 00:54:12.760 --> 00:54:14.010 WLWV Board Room: And 306 00:54:14.120 --> 00:54:24.910 WLWV Board Room: you look at the math program where it is how students are doing in terms of data outcomes. And we also look at what the research about practices tells us. 307 00:54:25.580 --> 00:54:32.120 WLWV Board Room: And there is professional learning that goes on during that time with the materials that we have at the time. 308 00:54:32.240 --> 00:54:39.739 WLWV Board Room: As we're looking, then, towards all right. If these are the practices we know, we need to be using, what do we need to look for? 309 00:54:39.790 --> 00:54:50.800 WLWV Board Room: So we have done that. And then the the process. There's a team. And again, every math teacher, middle level was involved in the middle level adoption. 310 00:54:51.120 --> 00:54:57.769 WLWV Board Room: and every high school math teacher was involved in the high school materials. 311 00:54:58.480 --> 00:55:01.929 WLWV Board Room: We always use the ode rubric 312 00:55:02.230 --> 00:55:09.490 WLWV Board Room: their materials. They have a guideline. They have a set, a toolkit actually, and we also 313 00:55:09.600 --> 00:55:24.609 WLWV Board Room: use the list of the materials that have met criteria there, even though they've met criteria. There. We have our own lens based on what we've seen about students in our district. So then, we actually use the very same rubric again, as well as other 314 00:55:24.650 --> 00:55:31.480 WLWV Board Room: materials that we'll talk about. after they look, and they start to examine 315 00:55:31.760 --> 00:55:55.569 WLWV Board Room: and start to use some of the materials. And one thing that is kind of nice in this day and age is publishers are very, very eager to give you online accounts and free materials. As a matter of fact, that's why the little clean up effort we have a lot of stuff showed into that room, because this has gone on starting with high school for several years now, and 316 00:55:55.610 --> 00:55:59.119 WLWV Board Room: they want to send things for teachers to try. 317 00:56:00.180 --> 00:56:07.159 WLWV Board Room: Then when we narrow it down, they invite representatives. And we actually. 318 00:56:07.480 --> 00:56:28.549 WLWV Board Room: instead of just saying, Come in and tell us about your your math materials. We use the questions, and we use the guidelines in a really specific about this is what we want the presentation to be. And that's something that we we found is really important. You know how you have to ask everybody the same questions and have the same presentation sort of thing. 319 00:56:28.780 --> 00:56:37.050 WLWV Board Room: and then again doing that part of the process. The team uses re rubrics and evaluates. And then. 320 00:56:37.100 --> 00:56:39.859 WLWV Board Room: as we're here this evening, the selection 321 00:56:40.130 --> 00:56:53.030 WLWV Board Room: is brought forward to the School Board to recommend for approval along with the whole process. Because that's something, too, you know. And looking at, did we skip a step in the process, or something is something else that's important to us 322 00:56:54.040 --> 00:56:54.730 WLWV Board Room: next. 323 00:56:57.110 --> 00:57:06.340 WLWV Board Room: So one of the things that with this process that is a bit unique. It started in 2,01819 with high school. 324 00:57:06.510 --> 00:57:17.830 WLWV Board Room: Kenny was there, and we had all the tables put together in the boardroom, because all the high school math teachers and learning specialists and assistant principals. 325 00:57:18.140 --> 00:57:31.559 WLWV Board Room: and and we had language specialists representation were able to participate. Their renewal. Part goes back several years before that with work we did with teachers, development Group 326 00:57:31.770 --> 00:57:46.800 WLWV Board Room: and the high school teachers were especially looking at the quality of the math tasks that students had, and especially are they applicable beyond just this problem or set of problems that I'm giving students right now. 327 00:57:47.630 --> 00:58:03.440 WLWV Board Room: So teachers also have a voice. And actually our principals. And what do we need to learn? And we had done this? There's Dr. Julie Frederick, who has a Ph. D. In algebra actually worked very closely with our high schools 328 00:58:03.470 --> 00:58:10.319 WLWV Board Room: just to get down to what is it that we're actually looking for with our students? And so again. 329 00:58:10.440 --> 00:58:31.969 WLWV Board Room: all of our high school teachers were part of that, and we would organize this sometimes by getting Teachers Development group staff and selecting someone from there and would be at the high schools for set days. And then teachers would be released for part of the day to work with those specialists. So that's where it started. 330 00:58:33.150 --> 00:58:48.129 WLWV Board Room: So then the idea was they had materials and had put them gotten them ready to be in classrooms. Then we had this pandemic because the idea was we were going to start. Then 331 00:58:48.190 --> 00:58:58.310 WLWV Board Room: with the middle school, we start with high school, with first with mathematics, because there's a real trajectory. Where do students need to be when they graduate from high school? 332 00:58:59.440 --> 00:59:10.579 WLWV Board Room: So then, this renewal process, and you're going to hear more about what renewal at Middle school looked like that went on during the 2,021, 2,022 333 00:59:10.630 --> 00:59:12.620 WLWV Board Room: and the school year. 334 00:59:12.920 --> 00:59:18.660 WLWV Board Room: And that was a process where again, all middle school teachers. 335 00:59:18.710 --> 00:59:23.599 WLWV Board Room: we're involved in that work. And 2,122 is when we actually 336 00:59:23.790 --> 00:59:41.439 WLWV Board Room: came back to school. So there was an acknowledged lag in the process. We believe that you have to do that work in person. People have to actually look at the materials they have to have things to use in the classroom with students. And again. 337 00:59:41.820 --> 00:59:44.380 WLWV Board Room: all of our teachers have participated. 338 00:59:44.890 --> 00:59:49.870 WLWV Board Room: Then, where this is going next is there will be 339 00:59:50.380 --> 00:59:57.539 WLWV Board Room: starting in spring, 2,024. This will start in primary school. 340 00:59:57.620 --> 01:00:14.690 WLWV Board Room: and because if you're a K. 5. Teacher. You teach all subjects we can't take. you know all what 185 of them at one time. we'd have no teachers to to do that. So that's where you hear this grade band representation. 341 01:00:14.860 --> 01:00:33.329 WLWV Board Room: But then there are questions there's in in a form of surveys and the form of things you take back to do. And you space the process so that there's time to work and gather input from everyone. And again, in all these processes. It's it's self selecting. 342 01:00:33.620 --> 01:00:41.370 WLWV Board Room: So just to let you know that that the primary school that's why we're not talking about primary school this evening. 343 01:00:41.490 --> 01:00:45.310 And this is something that the Oregon Department of education 344 01:00:45.820 --> 01:00:50.719 WLWV Board Room: actually, there is interest in processes being thorough 345 01:00:51.090 --> 01:01:00.520 WLWV Board Room: and doing more with actually what we call the renewal here, where you're looking at instructional practice. So their requirement is 346 01:01:00.550 --> 01:01:03.300 WLWV Board Room: just make sure that 347 01:01:03.810 --> 01:01:19.330 WLWV Board Room: your community and your school board knows the timeline for the project. So this is nothing where there's any request. for a postponement. When you set up a process like this, especially because we did have the lag with 348 01:01:20.300 --> 01:01:35.849 WLWV Board Room: with the pandemic where we didn't continue. So that's just sort of the background around how we got to where we are. And now you're going to hear some specifics about actually the renewal process. What we did for 2 years. And what we're bringing forward. 349 01:01:41.830 --> 01:01:59.599 WLWV Board Room: Thanks, Dr. Soyson. thank you. I'm really excited to be here to share about this process. It's been there has been a process, has been a number of years now that we've been working on this, and really excited to tell you about. You know the sort of timeline that we've been working on together, and then ultimately the the outcome of our selection. 350 01:01:59.780 --> 01:02:27.700 WLWV Board Room: so you know, I wanted to to start first with back, and I guess it was really the end of the 2021 school year. The sixth grade teachers got together as a team. to kind of take a look at the sixth grade math program that had been in place for some time and sort of review where we were at based on some of the the findings that we had both experientially as a teacher, and then also, what some of the data was showing. And if you take a look at that first bullet point up there. 351 01:02:27.700 --> 01:02:56.749 WLWV Board Room: you'll notice that something that our teachers had been experiencing, and that we noticed from our students is that, you know, for a long time we've been noticing that many of our sixth grade students were coming into middle school already showing readiness beyond the the grade level. So many of our fifth graders had already had some understanding of our sixth grade math standards, and previously, prior to the 2122 school year, our students who entered into middle school in sixth grade 352 01:02:56.750 --> 01:03:25.009 WLWV Board Room: had 2 different math classes that they were attend invited to attend. Either there was an accelerated class, or there was a grade level class. in the 2122 school year, with the data showing that we had had so many students showing readiness for accelerated math content the sixth grade team of teachers came together, starting again with like a meeting, I believe, at the end of the school year prior to that, and then some meetings over the summer as well. And we got together and really took a look at the scope and sequence of our program 353 01:03:25.010 --> 01:03:30.799 and and looked at. How could we offer an experience for our students that would have accelerated mathematics for all 354 01:03:30.800 --> 01:03:55.790 WLWV Board Room: and what you see there outlined in for you before you is sort of a a unit outline. that the the team of teachers in sixth grade came together to develop. That includes all of the sixth grade math standards, and again, these are standards from ode. These are the common core standards. along with the overlap that they have with the seventh grade math standards as well, because there's many topics where, as you know, math is, you know it progressive, and 355 01:03:55.790 --> 01:04:01.509 thing leads to the next, and there's a lot of opportunity to engage in accelerated learning for all of our students. 356 01:04:01.510 --> 01:04:18.290 WLWV Board Room: So that was a change that we made in the 2122 school year to our math program, identifying what are those key standards that we think all of our sixth graders are ready for? And then we continue that work throughout the school year with 4 h, half day work sessions with the team of sixth grade teachers. 357 01:04:18.290 --> 01:04:42.289 WLWV Board Room: you know. Just starting with a plan is one thing. But then you have to go through in each individual unit. You need to design the assessments. You need to take a look at what are the engaging projects that we're going to do. And I think this process was really just fruitful in the fact that our teachers came together across the mid level. So there's representation across all schools, and everyone was sharing in the ideas. And really, some of the successes that they've been having over the years. But it really brought a lot of cohesion and tightness to our 358 01:04:42.290 --> 01:04:49.940 sixth grade program. and I tell you a little bit later about what the results of that were. But I'll hop ahead to the next slide here. 359 01:04:51.190 --> 01:05:15.160 WLWV Board Room: And so, after the 2122 school year, where we made some changes to our sixth grade program. Obviously, that was going to have an effect on what we were doing in seventh grade in the next school year. This previous school year 2223 So we again had the opportunity to come together with our seventh grade teachers and take a look at well, now that we've seen all of our students have had some exposure to our seventh grade 360 01:05:15.160 --> 01:05:24.300 WLWV Board Room: standards in sixth grade. What's the implication for their learning as a seventh grader. And so the seventh grade team of teachers came together there, and you can see 361 01:05:24.300 --> 01:05:42.089 WLWV Board Room: again the color coding gets even more complex when we have another layer to things here. Some of the standards that students were coming to seventh grade already understanding standards that hadn't yet been covered in as great a detail, and then some eighth grade standards again, folding into the seventh grade 362 01:05:42.090 --> 01:06:06.760 WLWV Board Room: class content In response to seeing the successes that our students were having again. This work was supported throughout the school year, and I think this is really important to mention that teachers were coming together, not just once or twice before the school year started, but really continuing ongoing work and and developing these students collaboratively and looking back and seeing what the data showed them along the way to make adjustments. And it was really was great to be a part of that process as well. 363 01:06:07.440 --> 01:06:10.300 WLWV Board Room: and then moving on to the next slide. 364 01:06:11.460 --> 01:06:17.489 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. So then, obviously, we're going to be continuing that work with our eighth graders 365 01:06:17.550 --> 01:06:47.340 WLWV Board Room: next year, our eighth grade team of teachers as that group from 2122, those sixth graders. They were seventh graders last year. They'll be eighth graders coming up next year. but we really needed to come together with our eighth grade group to take a look at. Okay, let's develop at least the scope and sequence, if not the individual unit plans, and and what are all the assessments and all the sort of nuts and bolts that goes into it. But before we're able to really look at curriculum. We need to know exactly what it is that we're teaching at every level. So again, you see the eighth grade standards that were taught in seventh grade that the students were already going to have some knowledge of 366 01:06:47.440 --> 01:07:07.349 WLWV Board Room: eighth grade standards that were for the eighth grade course, and then algebra and geometry high school standards woven into that eighth grade class as well. and we also invited in some of our high school math colleagues as well, into this process to talk about some changes that they're making at the high school level, too. 367 01:07:07.820 --> 01:07:22.330 WLWV Board Room: so that that occurred sort of towards the end of this school year, and then next year, in 2,324, we're going to be spending time with the eighth grade teachers kind of doing a similar process of bringing everybody together across the mid level, continuing to collaborate and having those work sessions together. 368 01:07:23.340 --> 01:07:24.529 WLWV Board Room: Next slide, please. 369 01:07:24.830 --> 01:07:47.740 WLWV Board Room: And so I I guess the exciting stuff that is really great to share about is that we notice in 2,122, our sixth grade. So that was the year that we adapted. This kind of sixth grade accelerated math program for all of our students. Their growth in in their map scores was greater across the middle schools than it had been in the previous 10 school years. So we kind of saw an immediate impact on that work that we did. And I think 370 01:07:47.740 --> 01:08:12.740 WLWV Board Room: you know, it's a testament to the collaboration of across schools, and just the the great minds that we have of our teachers putting together their thinking in their resources. Last year, when those same students who had benefited from that program were seventh graders, they showed similar gains in math growth. And then again, in 2,324, this upcoming school year, those students will be eighth graders. So we've kind of been at all 3 levels of the middle school now, and working on this kind of thinking about what 371 01:08:12.740 --> 01:08:24.660 WLWV Board Room: our, what our instructional philosophies, what are the ways that we're going to be assessing students. and what do they need to be ready to learn at each grade level, so that, prepared as well to be able to look at some curricular materials. 372 01:08:27.069 --> 01:08:56.059 WLWV Board Room: And then again, as I mentioned the eighth grade course, is also looking ahead at the High School to see what changes are are being made there in the courses that they're offering And then, by March of 2023 this year, all of our middle level math teachers, our specialists and administrators had participated in some form of renewal work looking at the scope and sequence, looking at the unit plans so that everybody is in a really well situated place to start looking at. Okay, what are the curricular materials we want to bring in to help us execute this plan. 373 01:08:56.939 --> 01:09:00.679 WLWV Board Room: and I will turn it over to my colleague. Mr. Hoy, and 374 01:09:00.840 --> 01:09:01.880 WLWV Board Room: I love 375 01:09:02.870 --> 01:09:13.059 WLWV Board Room: yeah. You said I could jump up and down before that, so I was one of those lucky sixth grade math teachers who got to participate with Kenny and 376 01:09:13.910 --> 01:09:17.490 WLWV Board Room: it was kind of incredible when we first started this 377 01:09:17.500 --> 01:09:27.729 WLWV Board Room: and immediately we noticed some of the things that we noticed in our classrooms. Kids were excited. We we decided to start with a math strand, ratio and proportional thinking, 2 378 01:09:27.819 --> 01:09:38.789 WLWV Board Room: which none of the kids had ever done before. So all the kids were at the same playing field. There were kids that were true, that were ready for more than sixth grade math. But there were kids that didn't think of themselves as mathematicians. 379 01:09:38.939 --> 01:09:54.820 WLWV Board Room: Kids started getting really excited and working and collaborating with each other and and started thinking of themselves as mathematicians, and seeing the kinds of success that they had in the sixth grade. And in the seventh grade math. 380 01:09:54.900 --> 01:10:07.420 WLWV Board Room: I had so many kids who said, Wow, I I'm an accelerated map, and it was really exciting. some other things that we didn't really, that I didn't think about so much when we started doing this 381 01:10:07.420 --> 01:10:26.809 WLWV Board Room: is that with this wider range of differentiation with kids kids who, you know, really like math, like the challenges, some kids who maybe just were a little reluctant. But they started to collaborate with each other, and the math level of conversation just went straight up. And so all kids really participated in all kids. 382 01:10:26.900 --> 01:10:30.580 WLWV Board Room: I think, really got exposure to 383 01:10:30.600 --> 01:10:37.980 WLWV Board Room: math, thinking math strategies in a way that it didn't happen when we had split the 2 different groups of kids. 384 01:10:38.500 --> 01:10:44.319 WLWV Board Room: another piece was because we had a wider range of 385 01:10:44.400 --> 01:11:05.939 WLWV Board Room: material like sixth grade into seventh grade. I think there were more levels of places for kids to enter into that map. And so some kids were thinking kind of more on a seventh grade proportional thinking level. But some kids were thinking out of sixth grade low, but all the kids had a chance to kind of get in there and be a part of the math conversation and the math learning and 386 01:11:05.940 --> 01:11:21.509 WLWV Board Room: and the I think, the collaborate, the collegialness of those kids helping each other and talking and listening to each other, finding connections between the math areas that we were looking at between 6 and seventh grade. But also. 387 01:11:21.650 --> 01:11:23.359 WLWV Board Room: you know, from ratio to 388 01:11:23.420 --> 01:11:28.610 WLWV Board Room: come, Mr. Ways, and that looks a lot like fractions and kind of making those connections was. 389 01:11:29.020 --> 01:11:32.499 WLWV Board Room: It was so engaging for the kids. It was pretty fun for me to 390 01:11:32.730 --> 01:11:54.140 WLWV Board Room: Kids took lots more risks. Kids weren't afraid to when we identified, and we were very clear about identifying sixth grade level. learning targets and seventh grade level that learning targets and kids started to take more risks with trying to learn and figuring it out and making connections, and that was really great. 391 01:11:54.250 --> 01:11:56.249 WLWV Board Room: And I guess the big thing 392 01:11:56.910 --> 01:12:11.770 WLWV Board Room: was that they thought it was a class of mathematicians, of class math thinkers, and and that was, I think, one of the best parts about. I still have kids come back. last this last year seventh graders come in and said. 393 01:12:11.890 --> 01:12:18.339 WLWV Board Room: I want to. I want to be a we have what hells, people, kids who come in for one of the related arts. 394 01:12:18.390 --> 01:12:24.480 WLWV Board Room: I want to help in your math class, because I want to help those kids kind of see them. And that was really exciting to have that. 395 01:12:26.690 --> 01:12:28.829 WLWV Board Room: Can you go to the next one, please. 396 01:12:29.400 --> 01:12:37.290 WLWV Board Room: So the areas that we thought about that we were selecting when we considered selecting map materials was, can we use these 397 01:12:37.620 --> 01:13:05.679 WLWV Board Room: math materials as flexibly as we did when we were meeting together, using connected math and all the other things that we had. And you know, Barb said there was only about 21 people there, but it was still a lot like hurting cats in some ways when we started looking at, I think 7 or 8 different curriculums but one of the big things was, can we pull easily, pull things from seventh grade to to use in sixth grade 398 01:13:06.290 --> 01:13:15.860 WLWV Board Room: And then there's it was really nice to have the high school teachers in there, too, because they could help the middle school teachers and eighth grade. Think about aligning 399 01:13:16.490 --> 01:13:27.109 WLWV Board Room: will. The the the next part was a student interest, because one of the things that we really tried to do when we connected. The sixth and seventh grade math together in sixth grade was, can we 400 01:13:27.830 --> 01:13:49.809 WLWV Board Room: have kids work on problems together? And can we have kids? be able to work independently on that. And that was an important part is to is to have both of those pieces of the math communication that really builds that math classroom and a math environment, but also that the kids are are mastering individually these ideas, these math ideas. 401 01:13:50.030 --> 01:14:06.360 WLWV Board Room: we wanted to have access for all students could kids who are multilingual kids on Ips? Could we find a a curriculum that would help us to be able to welcome them in and and and help them be a part of that math community. 402 01:14:06.400 --> 01:14:08.840 WLWV Board Room: And then, finally, 403 01:14:09.050 --> 01:14:18.570 WLWV Board Room: you know, does does this math curriculum fit? What our kids, what our kids look like in our classrooms, and can they help us even improve math achievement 404 01:14:19.770 --> 01:14:21.200 WLWV Board Room: next slide, please. 405 01:14:23.010 --> 01:14:28.390 WLWV Board Room: So like I said, it was hurting cats. But it was a lot of fun. 406 01:14:28.420 --> 01:14:34.039 WLWV Board Room: There are a lot of people in there, and when we first started I remember being so far apart with 407 01:14:34.070 --> 01:14:59.329 WLWV Board Room: what initial people thought what people listen initially thought that I did not think that it would come together this year. Didn't you threaten us at one time? No, no, I I don't know if you but it was a really important process, because it it really helped. Reflect, I think for my sixth grade and seventh grade teachers that I knew the best. Well, I know the eighth grade to a lot, but that we 408 01:14:59.430 --> 01:15:18.399 WLWV Board Room: saw that happen so well, so successfully, us working together as a whole district, that we knew that we could do that. And so that was really important. And then another piece was that we were able to take those materials home and try them out, not home, but into our classrooms, and try some of the lessons out and see how it worked with kids. 409 01:15:18.510 --> 01:15:22.660 WLWV Board Room: and it was actually a very short time, just between March and June. So 410 01:15:23.460 --> 01:15:24.840 WLWV Board Room: next one, please. 411 01:15:25.820 --> 01:15:43.760 WLWV Board Room: And we used as Kenny, I think, alluded to. We use the math instructional practice as the national ones that the national recommendations for finding in math curriculum. And then Oregon had their own set. So we made sure that the ones we used were ones that were approved by Oregon. 412 01:15:43.790 --> 01:15:46.199 WLWV Board Room: And then we used our math data. 413 01:15:46.290 --> 01:15:54.989 WLWV Board Room: some of the successes that we've had over the last year and 2 and and and really kind of wanting to make sure that 414 01:15:55.030 --> 01:16:14.350 WLWV Board Room: it wasn't just math teachers there. It was also teachers from Spa, from Special Ed and Teach, and they were principal. My own principal even came once or twice, and just. It was felt like a really collaborative process. So it was a really great experience to look at adoption materials. 415 01:16:14.820 --> 01:16:15.630 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 416 01:16:19.190 --> 01:16:23.979 WLWV Board Room: This is my turn in the dance Scott maze, 417 01:16:24.350 --> 01:16:30.050 WLWV Board Room: learning specialist perspective. So we've already alluded to looking for a curriculum that 418 01:16:30.530 --> 01:16:37.500 WLWV Board Room: all students can access and learn from and glean from and act yeah, benefit. 419 01:16:37.870 --> 01:16:38.850 WLWV Board Room: And 420 01:16:39.790 --> 01:16:52.999 WLWV Board Room: there's 2 statistics on this screen that we looked at. And the first one is fifth graders who take the map test, which is a test that we do twice a year, and 421 01:16:53.280 --> 01:17:00.759 WLWV Board Room: about over that that kind of 4 years there and then the recent year, about 57% come. 422 01:17:01.250 --> 01:17:05.520 WLWV Board Room: It's represented by the map test showing that they're ready to learn the standards. 423 01:17:05.580 --> 01:17:07.789 WLWV Board Room: that sixth grade 424 01:17:08.110 --> 01:17:20.359 WLWV Board Room: begins with at the beginning of the year. The second statistics. So one of the things we want to say is, well, what can we do to raise that percentage? It's a nice percentage. It's not a great percentage 425 01:17:20.720 --> 01:17:33.750 WLWV Board Room: and then the second 1 35 for students with Ips. And this is on the the State testing. not 35% of the students students with Iep score about 35% 426 01:17:33.830 --> 01:17:46.970 WLWV Board Room: lower than students without Iep on the State testing. And that's an average over 5 years for the 3 grades. so we want to decrease that gap, so 427 01:17:47.120 --> 01:17:52.099 WLWV Board Room: raise the percentage of the first one, and you decrease the gap of the second one. 428 01:17:52.130 --> 01:18:04.089 WLWV Board Room: So with looking at curriculum, that was one of the things. Has this going to help us do that? And assessments are only one measure of of learning. But you know the thing we look at. So this next line? 429 01:18:04.310 --> 01:18:10.120 WLWV Board Room: those 2 statistics are on the right handhand side of this slide that 430 01:18:10.390 --> 01:18:15.559 WLWV Board Room: implications for things to consider when looking at curriculum. 431 01:18:15.580 --> 01:18:26.710 WLWV Board Room: based on those statistics. We want materials that are flexible, with a broad range of grade level standards, and that's already been spoken to, that things can be pulled from the next grade 432 01:18:27.000 --> 01:18:28.920 WLWV Board Room: standard to 433 01:18:28.950 --> 01:18:36.720 WLWV Board Room: or with students in the Pre lower to younger grade to support their learning. If they're ready for that 434 01:18:36.740 --> 01:19:02.549 WLWV Board Room: interesting and engaging materials that prompt the students to inquire and go to the next level with their math thinking? And am I looking at what we're going to recommend. It seems like it will do that. materials that provide not only additional practice, but applications, extensions, and links to the next learning with similar concepts. And so students who are ready to go further, there's material there to to pull from and use 435 01:19:02.570 --> 01:19:13.999 WLWV Board Room: the second borrow the bottom box there. multiple ways to understand and practice math concepts. for students who need a different way to look at. It needed different way to 436 01:19:14.230 --> 01:19:15.760 WLWV Board Room: be in to understand it. 437 01:19:16.480 --> 01:19:23.220 WLWV Board Room: Lot of the students benefit from visual hands on. So this we're looking at, that 438 01:19:23.570 --> 01:19:31.599 WLWV Board Room: is the curriculum adaptable to, you know? Does it work with all class or small groups, or one on one? So 439 01:19:33.360 --> 01:19:43.350 WLWV Board Room: the concept of of the math and the basic maths procedure. So that? What's this math really about? What are the skills and steps to actually do it? 440 01:19:44.150 --> 01:19:54.120 WLWV Board Room: and then, can the material be use with just an individual? Can we digested? Adapt it to work with an individual student? No 441 01:19:54.650 --> 01:20:00.289 WLWV Board Room: one of the things I think about. And and as I look at these slides and you're looking at them on the screen. 442 01:20:00.450 --> 01:20:01.800 WLWV Board Room: One of the things that 443 01:20:01.990 --> 01:20:14.940 WLWV Board Room: I consider for students is how much white space is on the page, how much blank non text filled spaces there. And what we're looking at has a lot of text. Most and lot of students would say, Whoa, that's a lot. 444 01:20:15.110 --> 01:20:25.080 WLWV Board Room: you know, most of us, you know, because we're here. We probably can make sense of this pretty well. But is there white space and both in the 445 01:20:25.300 --> 01:20:33.559 WLWV Board Room: printed version of the material and the the digital version. And so that's one of the things we're looking at. Can the students access it? 446 01:20:33.580 --> 01:20:35.579 WLWV Board Room: And then can they 447 01:20:36.260 --> 01:20:50.940 WLWV Board Room: show that their understanding is so that they're learning in in various ways, and can the work be modified or adjusted, adopted to students who are coming from a different place in their understanding it. How their brain works. 448 01:20:53.770 --> 01:21:02.010 WLWV Board Room: I'm not going to read every one of these we just want to look at is this gonna work for a whole range of students. And 449 01:21:02.570 --> 01:21:10.420 WLWV Board Room: that's the big question. And is it going to be adaptable for the class setting, or a small group or one on one 450 01:21:11.150 --> 01:21:16.069 WLWV Board Room: And will students be working together, collaborating, sharing their learning and understanding 451 01:21:16.080 --> 01:21:17.589 WLWV Board Room: as well as 452 01:21:19.240 --> 01:21:24.830 WLWV Board Room: when it comes time to really show their learning. Can they do it? So all right. 453 01:21:28.470 --> 01:21:30.150 WLWV Board Room: Hi, I'm Katie 454 01:21:30.220 --> 01:21:32.020 WLWV Board Room: So 455 01:21:32.080 --> 01:21:36.609 WLWV Board Room: one of the things that we can probably switch to the next screen 456 01:21:36.640 --> 01:21:48.239 WLWV Board Room: One of the things that that is similar is that there was that 37% average gap lower for English learners than for the overall 457 01:21:48.280 --> 01:21:52.190 WLWV Board Room: proficiency in in statewide assessment and mathematics. 458 01:21:52.280 --> 01:22:19.810 WLWV Board Room: but I want to just kind of switch gears for a moment and have you think about the function of language, because one of the proponents, you know, for kind of leading our work in eld over the past few years. Is that you to Walkie, and I want you to kind of think of what she's had us all focus on in terms of the function of language. And so 459 01:22:19.870 --> 01:22:44.210 WLWV Board Room: just a quick example. A couple of days ago I had the opportunity with my dad to look over my maintenance manual for my priest, and I think he was a lot more excited than I was about that, and that's probably how a lot of our students feel is I was excited because he was excited. But But anyway, we both wanted this pesky maintenance required like to go off because it was faulty. 460 01:22:44.230 --> 01:22:51.420 WLWV Board Room: and one of the things that I need to walk. He says that's really important is that language is action. 461 01:22:51.450 --> 01:23:09.160 WLWV Board Room: And if we can think about language as action and the you know, what, what do we need language to really do for us? it helps us understand that we're both teaching form and function through action when we have that lens. 462 01:23:09.160 --> 01:23:27.370 WLWV Board Room: And so it's really important that that you know some of the fun that we were having in your in your math classes and seeing students really engaged and enjoying this process. it serves so many, so many important functions for students, but one of them is just that 463 01:23:27.390 --> 01:23:28.750 WLWV Board Room: they're engaged. 464 01:23:28.980 --> 01:23:49.719 WLWV Board Room: The other one is that this language is impactful. And we're keeping. We're keeping the focus on the content. So they're learning through the content. That's how they're learning the language. just the same way that for my dad and I reading that manual, we had a purpose. We needed to actually reset the 465 01:23:49.780 --> 01:24:16.889 WLWV Board Room: you know, the computer screen so that that warning would go away. students are trying to actually solve a complex problem through learning this language. And we need to make sure that we're constantly keeping things relevant. like, Rob was explaining. We need to make this kind of work enticing for students. And part of what we're doing is we're providing opportunities for students to engage in this analytical skill building 466 01:24:16.890 --> 01:24:47.789 WLWV Board Room: the conceptual understanding. And they're using a language that's needed for the task of learning. So those are some of the things that our, you know, kind of what we've been using as our lens when we've been working with with our English language learners, and I had the opportunity to work in Rob's class. a couple, you know, for 2 years now, and it's been really, really, really fun to see students engaging in some of that work and feeling really confident. 467 01:24:47.820 --> 01:25:09.350 WLWV Board Room: So 10 of the students did increase in. you know, they they met those growth targets on the map, mathematics, assessments from winter 2,021 to one or 2,023 at sixth and seventh grade, and that reflects some of this renewal work that that the math teachers were engaging in 468 01:25:09.700 --> 01:25:14.739 WLWV Board Room: and also that. So that was the sixth graders. 469 01:25:14.770 --> 01:25:22.840 WLWV Board Room: having access to those seventh grade math targets, and then the seventh graders having access to the eighth grade mass target 470 01:25:22.860 --> 01:25:25.940 WLWV Board Room: so we can probably move to the next line. 471 01:25:28.180 --> 01:25:37.300 WLWV Board Room: okay. So the implications for the math curriculum materials. So the materials that we you know that we want to be using. 472 01:25:37.300 --> 01:26:00.489 WLWV Board Room: They prompt student talk. They prompt that interactive processing that I was talking about for understanding the materials ideally will include visuals and clear examples, and they would make clear and frequent connections between math vocabulary and the problems or tasks and consistent use of that conceptual vocabulary for for language learners. 473 01:26:00.640 --> 01:26:02.309 WLWV Board Room: and then, 474 01:26:02.330 --> 01:26:27.099 WLWV Board Room: we did quite a bit developing formative assessments and eld over the past year. through an Oregon State University force that we took, but we know that formative assessments are extremely important for our language learners, but also for all students. to distinguish. You know that math content, understanding from like language, learning. 475 01:26:27.200 --> 01:26:38.789 WLWV Board Room: the other The other implications for math, curriculum materials. our the means of providing students with immediate feedback as they work through these problems. And 476 01:26:38.800 --> 01:26:53.520 WLWV Board Room: I think there are some elements of that in the in the digital format there's alignment between learning targets and the curriculum and common core math standards and it's adaptable for individual learning pace. 477 01:26:57.700 --> 01:27:08.990 WLWV Board Room: So here the considerations for multilingual learners, students need curriculum materials that promote daily, purposeful student talk about the content that they are learning in classes. 478 01:27:09.140 --> 01:27:20.290 WLWV Board Room: Students need materials that highlight and integrate academic vocabulary. soon seeing materials with complex language or problems to interactively interpret and solve. 479 01:27:20.800 --> 01:27:46.950 WLWV Board Room: Students need visuals and examples. They can access as part of the curriculum and having materials available on Spanish. the first language of most of our multilingual learners in Western Wilsonville is an advantage for learning. kind of brings me back just to assume that Rob and I had We were, you know, spending some time making materials for the student and making sure. You know that in those first few 480 01:27:46.950 --> 01:27:54.020 WLWV Board Room: months that they were able to access the materials, having materials in Spanish is obviously a huge asset. 481 01:27:54.030 --> 01:27:55.520 WLWV Board Room: as well 482 01:27:57.830 --> 01:27:59.019 WLWV Board Room: you can. Probably. 483 01:28:00.560 --> 01:28:14.250 WLWV Board Room: So Rob shared a little bit just that there. There were some comments not specific to curriculum or materials. Just that. students sometimes think math is really hard, and they feel like they're not good at it. 484 01:28:14.510 --> 01:28:15.949 WLWV Board Room: some students. 485 01:28:16.360 --> 01:28:43.260 WLWV Board Room: conversely, need more challenge and rigor and math and and also parents, have asked how middle school math is going to prepare their students for high school math and science courses, and have asked for assurance that their students will be ready for success with high school math and thank you, Kenny, for what you shared about kind of planning for for you know the high school math, and how that's going to be implemented in the some of the eighth grade 486 01:28:43.390 --> 01:28:45.120 WLWV Board Room: work that we're doing. 487 01:28:47.770 --> 01:28:52.590 WLWV Board Room: okay, that's mine. Thank you. 488 01:28:54.300 --> 01:28:56.250 WLWV Board Room: And that's me again. 489 01:28:57.740 --> 01:29:10.099 WLWV Board Room: excuse me. 2 quick things I was thinking about before actually speaking to this slide. the curriculum we're thinking about and considering what curriculum to consider. 490 01:29:10.260 --> 01:29:16.890 WLWV Board Room: a lot of times. Students ask, why do I need to learn this and this one again that we're going to recommend? 491 01:29:17.270 --> 01:29:27.539 WLWV Board Room: I think, addresses that in the way it teaches the math pretty well. And the other thing that's positive about it is that it gives opportunity. For in the moment. 492 01:29:27.550 --> 01:29:32.540 WLWV Board Room: assessment or evaluation of how's this student doing? Are they getting it? 493 01:29:32.650 --> 01:29:38.560 WLWV Board Room: Or you can just ask the same question, is the class getting it? Or it's a significant 494 01:29:38.600 --> 01:29:46.799 WLWV Board Room: number of students not getting it? And then you can respond as the teacher or the learning specialist or other adult 495 01:29:46.880 --> 01:29:49.060 WLWV Board Room: to that in the moment, or 496 01:29:50.300 --> 01:29:53.520 WLWV Board Room: pretty pretty close in over to real time. 497 01:29:53.890 --> 01:30:08.680 WLWV Board Room: yeah. So anyways, this slide, I think this kind of has been addressed in terms of the process. We had a big list of ode. approved math curriculums, and that list goes on and on. I don't remember how many were on it. 498 01:30:08.820 --> 01:30:13.859 WLWV Board Room: 30 or 40, maybe, and and we narrowed that down 499 01:30:14.080 --> 01:30:21.230 WLWV Board Room: based on the rubric that's on the other side the thing with not a lot of white space and 500 01:30:22.300 --> 01:30:28.599 WLWV Board Room: and then narrow that down to ultimately 4, which is what Kenny is going to come up and speak to 501 01:30:29.880 --> 01:30:30.940 WLWV Board Room: the next slide. 502 01:30:32.870 --> 01:30:58.919 WLWV Board Room: All right. I'm back to bring it home here. So we narrowed it down to 4 curriculum sort of programs. after going through the ode rubric, spending a lot of time really creating those look fors before we really engage too much with like, okay, let's get into this text. Let's bring it into my classroom and see what it looks like. Let's just make sure that these curricular programs that we're looking at really aligned with what we're doing programmatically across the district. 503 01:30:58.920 --> 01:31:25.289 WLWV Board Room: And so we narrowed it down to these 4. And at this point in time, we had full samples here, as Barb was alluding to earlier online accounts, which is really great because you get to see kind of how like, what's the user interface as a teacher's perspective? And then we invited for for each one of these curriculum programs like representatives to come and share with us a little bit more about it. and then I think one thing that's really, I think important to note is that we? We 504 01:31:25.290 --> 01:31:43.110 WLWV Board Room: sort of came up with our questions for them before they actually were in the room with us. And so They actually had an opportunity to speak to what some of our concerns were, and we're prepared to kind of address those things. Some of the nuances about our math program with having some different standards that we need to pull in, and all the things that we are looking for as a group 505 01:31:43.170 --> 01:31:49.520 WLWV Board Room: So we had these 4 folks come in and then, if we can go to the next slide. 506 01:31:49.880 --> 01:32:14.880 WLWV Board Room: we used this rubric to rate the materials during each presentation, and had the opportunity for question and answer sessions. And again, sometimes, when you have people coming from publishing companies, you can feel like very much kind of salesy and like their pitch into you, but because we had really narrowed our focus in on these are the things that we are looking for as a mid level math program. I think we're able to really get, you know, the information that we needed from each one of them. And so this is just an example 507 01:32:14.880 --> 01:32:27.280 of what people were looking at. and these are the same ode metrics and rubrics that they use to rate the the programs. and of course all 4 of these were vetted by ode before they were brought forward to us as well. 508 01:32:27.660 --> 01:32:29.280 WLWV Board Room: Next slide, please. 509 01:32:29.460 --> 01:32:42.429 WLWV Board Room: And so then we had something kind of unique happened in that. We all use the our, our separate scoring sheets to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the programs. and 510 01:32:42.430 --> 01:33:11.679 WLWV Board Room: and you know, Barr mentioned previously that I was a part of the High school adoption, which you know, I sometimes these things. They can go one way or the other. But if you look at, and that is just a a tally of what people's choices were. There was one clear clear stand out. And that was this program amplify with a a Desmos package. And you can see there, that's the rankings. there, where there's over 20, you know, educators. that were there present for those again across the mid level math teachers, 511 01:33:12.000 --> 01:33:41.400 WLWV Board Room: and out of those people all but one of them ranked this program as their number one choice which is pretty special that that would. There was such consensus off the bat, and the one person who didn't ranked it as their second choice. And they, they said the difference was negligible, and they could definitely work with amplify math as well. So it was really great to bring that many people together to do months and months of work together, and to have it kind of come together in such a way that Everyone was really supportive of this particular resource. for our students 512 01:33:42.080 --> 01:34:06.379 WLWV Board Room: next slide, please. So I guess now I get to share a little bit about what we like about this amplify math program. in addition to receiving very high scores on the ode rubric. I think there's a couple of things that stand out for me. I you know, we really wanted something that was engaging our our students in problem solving. So we want tasks that are interesting that are rigorous. That aren't just your kind of run of the mill, like 513 01:34:06.380 --> 01:34:31.360 WLWV Board Room: Sally's running at this space, and so on, so like. Why are we talking about this? I don't know why those give us something that we really want to. that engages our learners where they're at. Right? is it set up for student talk and discourse. That's something that's really important in our mid level math program. And really, in all of our middle schools is getting students to engage with one another collaboratively. So does the curriculum itself prompt students to turn and talk to someone. Does it help us with those instructional people 514 01:34:31.360 --> 01:34:57.829 WLWV Board Room: practices in the way that it's set up. Does it include adaptive practice and skill practice that will address some of our learners that are at varying levels. Right? We know we have to differentiate in the classroom is the curriculum going to support that it has a strong digital component which I'm excited to tell you about, but it also has the resources and the materials that they have. You get to write in as well. So the the student textbook which has all the information, and it also has the space for students 515 01:34:57.830 --> 01:35:08.149 WLWV Board Room: the white space. As Scott was talking about to write down their own thinking, and so when they have their textbook, they've got a chronicle of everything that they've been learning, but also their own work in the same place, which 516 01:35:08.150 --> 01:35:31.339 for our middle schoolers. It's really important that they just have kind of one place where everything lives, because the more it lives in different places, the more likely they are to lose something, or you know how. Guess? So the the really great thing about this amplified program is it's a partnership with Desmos and Desmos is kind of an interactive digital tool. that many there's been around for a while that many of our teachers have already had the experience working with. 517 01:35:31.340 --> 01:35:48.090 WLWV Board Room: I'd certainly been using it in my classroom when I was a math teacher as well. And the really exciting thing about Desmos is, it creates these learning experiences that are on the computer. Obviously, they're digital but opportunities to kind of take students through a journey of, you know, with a prompt that is 518 01:35:48.090 --> 01:36:08.089 WLWV Board Room: connected to their textbook. So it's there's an integration there. they're going to be exploring some of those math concepts by getting a chance to like try some things out. So, for example, one of the Desmo's activities that's really exciting is like when when students are learning how to write an equation of a line, they get an opportunity to write the equation, and the the goal is to like. 519 01:36:08.090 --> 01:36:37.320 WLWV Board Room: set it up. So it's a marble slide that will roll some marbles down and knock out these targets along the way. So you can imagine that's highly engaging. As a student to work with. You're practicing those skills of writing a linear equation. But you're also getting immediate feedback as a student like. Oh, I wrote this equation, and the marble is going the complete opposite direction. That's not what I meant to do, and you get a chance to revise that right away. Whereas if you're just kind of working on paper and pencil. The teacher is going to. It's going to take a little while for them to get around to you and make sure that you're you're working correctly. So you get that immediate feedback. 520 01:36:37.320 --> 01:37:00.399 WLWV Board Room: And as a teacher you have the ability to see everything that's happening on your student screens in real time as well. So you can be like, wait a minute. We've got somebody on like screen 12 over here, and then most of the classes on screen to. Still, we need to pause. We need to see what's going on. We need to figure out how to support that student that's going really far ahead of things. And we need to figure out what's going on with the rest of the class, too. So lot of great digital feedback. And it's a great great tool. 521 01:37:00.400 --> 01:37:11.559 WLWV Board Room: Then, again, our teachers are familiar with working with Desmos before. And so it's nice that that maybe the learning curve won't be so steep, because that's certainly a consideration. When you're selecting a new material as well 522 01:37:11.560 --> 01:37:36.560 WLWV Board Room: As Katie mentioned, it is available in Spanish. there's parent guides and resources for use at home, because parents are always asking, How can we support? And so I think that's really helpful. again, it uses manipulatives and digital manipulatives. But it blends that kind of working on the computer that is exciting for our students, but also still, as we know, like the traditional paper paper and pencil practices there. it includes our high school algebra materials as well. So we can bring those standards 523 01:37:36.560 --> 01:37:44.440 WLWV Board Room: in for eighth grade students. and as we've seen in classroom pilot so far, students really like it. And it's it's been engaging to work with. So 524 01:37:44.960 --> 01:37:49.390 WLWV Board Room: that's all I have. Thanks again for the opportunity. And I'm gonna turn it back over to Barb. 525 01:37:51.480 --> 01:38:12.330 WLWV Board Room: Okay, this is the last slide. part of it is back to the process. And that's our communication. One of the things about these processes is the working with informing the community. Getting input from parents is ongoing. And for the math one, it actually started in June 2,021, when we were all still doing 526 01:38:12.340 --> 01:38:40.550 WLWV Board Room: Zoom Meetings with parents, and we would not start to say we aren't going to have children go to sixth grade and not have accelerated math without having not only communication but opportunity for dialogue and input from parents. So that was set up where we had 2 Zoom Meetings, and then we leave the slides and all the explanation online to collect feedback. And the feedback has 527 01:38:40.550 --> 01:38:49.019 WLWV Board Room: just. There's been these 3 themes that have just remained constant, and the first one is from some parents around. 528 01:38:49.190 --> 01:39:01.009 WLWV Board Room: My child struggles with math. And so then there's sort of unpacking what that means. And again, this wasn't particular to materials, but just, you know. 529 01:39:01.210 --> 01:39:13.379 WLWV Board Room: doesn't feel they're good at math. Sometimes people will say I wasn't good at math. And so that's a theme. The second theme is the I really think my child needs more challenge. 530 01:39:13.760 --> 01:39:23.970 WLWV Board Room: and that's one that you know we take within anything we're going to look at, both with our instructional practices and with our materials. 531 01:39:23.970 --> 01:39:50.140 WLWV Board Room: How is that going to happen? So every child every day has new learning, and then the last one is the being ready for high school. One of the reasons for moving the standards around was, we have seen. And this isn't just sort of nationally. been in place for about 15 years that students need to have a solid algebra one background before they go to high school. 532 01:39:50.330 --> 01:40:18.479 WLWV Board Room: and that sometimes in the courses that we had, you know, 6, 7, 8. There were some students who were doing that. The other thing we wanted to communicate with parents and get input on is we have not removed the accelerated math classes at seventh and eighth grade, and part of it is eighth grade. You have algebra and geometry, and right now there is still a statewide discussion, and all high schools in the State are looking at geometry 533 01:40:18.480 --> 01:40:23.129 with some of this math, 2 plus one initiative. So we hooked into that. 534 01:40:23.360 --> 01:40:30.390 WLWV Board Room: Our eighth graders will use the same geometry curriculum that the high school students use, but that 535 01:40:30.440 --> 01:40:32.010 WLWV Board Room: starting with 536 01:40:32.020 --> 01:40:44.169 WLWV Board Room: in June 2,021, and honestly, we'd expected that some families might not be real pleased, because that had been something that had been in place for a long time. We have not had 537 01:40:44.370 --> 01:41:08.569 WLWV Board Room: feedback about not having accelerated math. It's still come back to those themes individually with students that we acknowledge that we need to work on. And that's why we picked out those gaps, you know, percentages and gaps. That that's where we're paying attention to. And this during the renewal process, I'd like in that to, you know, when you go through these processes we don't want to wait for our 538 01:41:08.570 --> 01:41:19.250 WLWV Board Room: community and our parent input until it's here's the materials, you know, parallel. That was, for example, in literacy. There were nights in schools this year. Where 539 01:41:19.650 --> 01:41:22.279 WLWV Board Room: come on in. Let's look at literacy. 540 01:41:22.440 --> 01:41:26.719 WLWV Board Room: And as you know, we're not looking at materials yet. So that 541 01:41:26.940 --> 01:41:34.959 WLWV Board Room: collection of input is ongoing at middle level. A lot of the collection of input from parents happens at conferences. 542 01:41:35.300 --> 01:41:38.950 WLWV Board Room: And that's something that you saw in an earlier slide that 543 01:41:38.990 --> 01:41:49.130 WLWV Board Room: the information from parents came from, you know, 2,015 to 2,019. We kind of just collect some of those same themes, you know, again and again. 544 01:41:49.410 --> 01:41:59.000 WLWV Board Room: So anyway, that's the communication about the process. And then we have not had a lot of direct feedback about the 545 01:41:59.030 --> 01:42:12.499 WLWV Board Room: amplify math. Desmos. it's been on our website. Andrew Kelstrom sent it to every family, you know. So it wasn't just passively there. And 546 01:42:12.650 --> 01:42:18.400 WLWV Board Room: there's been some interest, but not anything that has said. you know 547 01:42:18.540 --> 01:42:24.219 positive or negative things. about the curriculum. 548 01:42:24.360 --> 01:42:27.730 WLWV Board Room: so we continue to leave those on the website. 549 01:42:27.760 --> 01:42:42.240 WLWV Board Room: and you know, have the that out. We had 2 sessions that we offered. that we we didn't attract a crowd. We'll put it that way. you know, in in terms of coming in and talking about math 550 01:42:42.280 --> 01:42:43.890 and 551 01:42:44.270 --> 01:43:01.869 WLWV Board Room: that's kind of where we are with looking at the process to collect input the input from the staff. As we've already said several times. Everybody was in on that, you know, with this. So there wasn't, you know, there wasn't something that we were concerned with about that, and we included our 552 01:43:02.200 --> 01:43:26.910 WLWV Board Room: high school staff as well. So that's something that you know, we'll continue to work with and continue to like. Look at the especially the the gap data, the challenge, and the preparation for not only the math scores and students go to high school, but what's their choice of math courses based on this in science courses? That's also data that we keep. So 553 01:43:27.690 --> 01:43:30.020 WLWV Board Room: we're ready for your questions. 554 01:43:33.910 --> 01:43:35.800 WLWV Board Room: do we 555 01:43:36.380 --> 01:43:37.630 WLWV Board Room: have questions? 556 01:43:39.770 --> 01:43:42.870 WLWV Board Room: I can start with you. Do you have any questions? No. 557 01:43:43.230 --> 01:43:49.839 WLWV Board Room: you haven't. You have any, Dan? Yeah, I could real quickly. 558 01:43:51.240 --> 01:44:00.890 WLWV Board Room: thank you that was very thorough. I appreciate that. I I did have a question about, and and Dr. Soy and I have had conversations about this 559 01:44:01.530 --> 01:44:07.670 WLWV Board Room: for years. about sometimes in high school there is a sense 560 01:44:07.840 --> 01:44:23.459 WLWV Board Room: that math is is just about the mechanics right? How do you mechanically do algebra, as opposed to the understanding of algebra at a level where sometimes a high school teacher may say 561 01:44:24.190 --> 01:44:31.439 WLWV Board Room: that student doesn't quite understand algebra. What they really mean is they can't deal with fractional coefficients or something like that. 562 01:44:31.630 --> 01:44:33.370 WLWV Board Room: when. 563 01:44:33.630 --> 01:44:35.710 WLWV Board Room: Ha! Okay. 564 01:44:36.130 --> 01:44:45.489 WLWV Board Room: there, there were times when when high school teachers were involved. Right. They have different materials that they're using in vision, as I as I understand. 565 01:44:45.790 --> 01:44:53.980 WLWV Board Room: we do. Did they have feedback on that piece like how well this prepares kids sort of for the mechanical part of doing 566 01:44:55.000 --> 01:45:02.790 WLWV Board Room: math. You can all talk any one of you whatever. Yeah, I'm happy. Thank you. 567 01:45:03.420 --> 01:45:28.199 WLWV Board Room: I think that. Yeah, no, I think it's really vital to have the high school teachers as a part of this process, because their input, and what they're exclusive, right? These are our students that they're going and then working with at the high school level. So it's really important that we're taking in their input as well. I do know particularly. You know some of the colleagues that I work with at Westland High School. they've used the Des most math program as well. And I think again. 568 01:45:28.200 --> 01:45:38.759 WLWV Board Room: you know, one of the great things about it is the opportunity that it gives for students to build that understanding. And it isn't just going through the motions. It's actually like experiencing in real time, like. 569 01:45:38.760 --> 01:46:03.760 WLWV Board Room: you know, when I change the coefficient, for example, to like a a lower fraction or a negative fraction, or something like that. What does that look like? And how does that come up right away? And they get that immediate feedback. So I think students have a more engaging experience of understanding why some of those mechanical operations that you speak of like, why they work the way that they do, and not just in a way that's like I'm doing some worksheet that has me drawing lines. But actually, no, I'm doing this fun activity that's about like the slope of it. 570 01:46:03.760 --> 01:46:11.410 WLWV Board Room: or the car going down down a racetrack or something like that. And so they're getting that feedback on those mechanical operations in a way that 571 01:46:11.430 --> 01:46:24.700 WLWV Board Room: one, they get more repetition, which I think is really important, because that builds fluency, but also they see the connection to. why, if I change this, how does it actually affect the experience, or the the line, or whatever it? 572 01:46:24.980 --> 01:46:48.549 WLWV Board Room: Okay, thank you. And I would just add to that that it it is procedural. I know that the common core now with algebra, it it sometimes give them the algorithm. Let them see what that is, as opposed to the math curriculum, and some of the ones, all of them that came from the last iteration were more explore around in the problem. 573 01:46:48.550 --> 01:47:02.149 WLWV Board Room: And I know that that's what we've talked about is what's the balance with that? One thing that I think we we might not have clarified is a lot of times in curriculum, renewal, and adoption. You hear this word core and supplemental. 574 01:47:02.780 --> 01:47:11.519 WLWV Board Room: And the way this worked with this math program, it just so happened that amplify which is a core curriculum. 575 01:47:11.740 --> 01:47:13.890 WLWV Board Room: has merged 576 01:47:14.080 --> 01:47:18.650 WLWV Board Room: with Desmos, which would be considered a supplemental 577 01:47:18.660 --> 01:47:35.940 WLWV Board Room: when we do our curriculum, renewals, and adoptions. Here we bring both forward. But we haven't specified supplemental as much because of that, because it happened in some of the other programs. For example, in mid school math, they didn't necessarily have a 578 01:47:35.940 --> 01:47:57.929 WLWV Board Room: supplemental or something that allowed for adaptive practice. And that's again, kind of that balance of foundations, procedural practice. What are the rules? What do you have to know? Sort of thing with the actual application in the core curriculum? So you're hearing when you hear Desmos think that that's that's what we're bringing forward. 579 01:48:01.750 --> 01:48:03.120 WLWV Board Room: Any other questions. 580 01:48:04.530 --> 01:48:05.600 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 581 01:48:05.730 --> 01:48:14.850 WLWV Board Room: Appreciate the in-depth explanation of all of your work, and it does sound like it was a lot of work. So thank you all for for the time. 582 01:48:15.100 --> 01:48:19.510 WLWV Board Room: do we have a motion to 583 01:48:20.390 --> 01:48:23.500 approve the amplified education as been presented? 584 01:48:23.590 --> 01:48:35.700 WLWV Board Room: I moved to adopt, amplify education for middle school, mathematics and vision math for high school, algebra and big ideas, geometry for middle and high school. And do we have a second. I'll second 585 01:48:36.280 --> 01:48:38.000 WLWV Board Room: and any discussion. 586 01:48:40.470 --> 01:48:42.680 WLWV Board Room: I didn't. Yeah. 587 01:48:42.790 --> 01:48:47.900 WLWV Board Room: I initially was going to ask this as a question. But then Dr. Soyson was 588 01:48:48.040 --> 01:49:05.840 WLWV Board Room: so attentive and included at the end. But I just wanted to make a comment about How impressive the work is that that you all did the time that went into it. The study, the energy, the expertise and 589 01:49:06.180 --> 01:49:08.119 WLWV Board Room: that specifically 590 01:49:08.280 --> 01:49:34.900 WLWV Board Room: means that I'm going to support this this adoption, because I know so much hard work and energy went into this process. But I'll also say, as a board member watching curriculum, renewal and adoption. This is also just been hugely informative and understanding the effort and time that our professionals put into curriculum evaluation, and especially as we've talked a lot about our literacy curriculum. 591 01:49:34.900 --> 01:49:55.710 WLWV Board Room: watching this from start to finish. and seeing the time and energy that has gone into it from our staff. and the involvement of parents. it's been really, really, enlightening. And so I really appreciate that ability to see this In addition to the fact that you know, you shared with us. 592 01:49:55.760 --> 01:50:10.870 WLWV Board Room: you know, hard data on test scores. But then you're also looking at things like our panorama data. And you're thinking about the needs of all of our learners. And it was so apparent, in your presentation tonight, and then just in the 593 01:50:10.870 --> 01:50:27.129 WLWV Board Room: the staff packet online. And so just really, wanna thank you for that. And I think the the one thing I I do want to point out is You know, one thing I feel like Dr. Ludwig always reminds us of is you could have any curriculum, but it really comes down to 594 01:50:27.130 --> 01:50:45.980 The talent and the passion of your teachers that are teaching that curriculum. and I felt like Mr. Hyson when you were talking about how excited kids were, and how they felt like mathematicians. that comes directly from teachers like you and your peers. who are doing this work. And so 595 01:50:46.320 --> 01:51:09.169 WLWV Board Room: the fact that you've invested time to identify these as the right curriculum paired with the work that you all are doing. for me makes this, you know, absolute you know, want to support the work that you've done make this adoption And and hopefully, we have all of our kids saying that their mathematicians, too, because that really was a meaningful way to describe that. So thank you. 596 01:51:11.180 --> 01:51:12.470 WLWV Board Room: director. Sloop. 597 01:51:14.870 --> 01:51:16.760 WLWV Board Room: yes, I 598 01:51:16.890 --> 01:51:21.820 WLWV Board Room: we will reiterate what, director? Why, it said, is 599 01:51:22.640 --> 01:51:30.789 WLWV Board Room: After going to the meeting that principal you, you, Banks, had, as well as Dr. Soyson. 600 01:51:31.220 --> 01:51:40.640 WLWV Board Room: I was very reassured as a whole curriculum process, and how it started back in 2,021. The teachers had hands on 601 01:51:40.700 --> 01:51:52.590 WLWV Board Room: a voice, and they went through ode approved list. They went through the rubric, and then they did their own of what they wanted. in particular, that would best fit all of our students. 602 01:51:52.980 --> 01:51:58.130 WLWV Board Room: and I will definitely be approving this curriculum. 603 01:51:58.410 --> 01:52:07.200 WLWV Board Room: I love the fact that it has Desmo's integrated in it. Where you get immediate feedback. So it is is Mr. You Bank said 604 01:52:07.360 --> 01:52:22.240 WLWV Board Room: a teacher immediately. Can tell who's who's getting it and who's not, and can adjust the classroom? I like the collaboration that allows the students. It has adaptive practice for our eld and our Iep students. 605 01:52:22.780 --> 01:52:33.640 WLWV Board Room: And that's our student interaction where they can collaborate together. Because sometimes, if you're hearing it. it takes a as another student in a different language of time, of explaining it. 606 01:52:33.720 --> 01:52:36.749 WLWV Board Room: and that there's the digital. And then also the textbook. 607 01:52:36.970 --> 01:52:47.359 WLWV Board Room: or text version. But what I really liked as a parent is the workbook. because I don't know common core math. I learned the old fashioned way. 608 01:52:47.670 --> 01:52:56.960 WLWV Board Room: but the descriptions in there were so thorough that a parent who was trying to help help their child could easily read the workbook and understand it. 609 01:52:57.100 --> 01:53:09.979 WLWV Board Room: and also the workbook. Everything is together. So you're not relying on your students to make their own math book, you know notebook, and then trying to go through their notes and understand what they were learning that day. 610 01:53:10.010 --> 01:53:20.190 WLWV Board Room: So the notebook workbook is very thorough, and then the biggest thing that I think that is an advantage to this, that it's available in Spanish. 611 01:53:20.340 --> 01:53:24.800 WLWV Board Room: So a a parent who speaks Spanish only at home could 612 01:53:25.130 --> 01:53:33.810 WLWV Board Room: be engaged in their students learning for math Or if there's a Spanish student that wants to have that in their native language. 613 01:53:33.860 --> 01:53:35.600 WLWV Board Room: Or if there's a 614 01:53:35.630 --> 01:53:40.909 WLWV Board Room: dual immersion, you know Spanish emerging program student who wants to kinda 615 01:53:41.290 --> 01:53:45.980 WLWV Board Room: take it up and watch and learn Spanish math or math through Spanish language. So 616 01:53:46.490 --> 01:53:53.899 WLWV Board Room: I think this offers a lot of checks a lot of the boxes off, and I will be voting us on it 617 01:53:56.180 --> 01:53:58.209 WLWV Board Room: the any other discussion. 618 01:54:00.350 --> 01:54:04.330 WLWV Board Room: Thank you so much. I just want to first 619 01:54:04.550 --> 01:54:26.220 WLWV Board Room: thank all the teachers and presenters tonight I attended the session. A doctor. I have elevated your title director and It was so informative. by Dr. Soyson and principal, you, Banks, and I 620 01:54:26.220 --> 01:54:42.630 WLWV Board Room: I really appreciate it. How they guided me through their process and the content of the curriculum. And the reason it's so important to me is because I have a fifth grader in the dual language program at Lowry, and he has 621 01:54:42.630 --> 01:54:59.900 WLWV Board Room: learned math all in Spanish, and he He really excels that. And so for me, math is really important for all kids to learn, and it was very concerning to me when I looked at the data from the Organ Department of Education 622 01:54:59.900 --> 01:55:23.909 WLWV Board Room: in the last 4 years to see that our students in our district, our math scores, were declining for our eighth graders, but I believe that this curriculum will raise them all up like you all mentioned during your presentation today, and I really appreciate your just candidness and your passion. for math and your in food. 623 01:55:23.910 --> 01:55:41.419 WLWV Board Room: And I think that will translate to your students, especially when you talk about these dynamic conversations surrounding math that I never had as a student. And I love to hear that students today are having these dynamic conversations 624 01:55:41.420 --> 01:55:52.179 WLWV Board Room: the adaptability is very important to me, the visuals and Also, I do appreciate that parents 625 01:55:52.180 --> 01:56:16.140 WLWV Board Room: along with this Desmo and the workbook can follow along with their students and assist them if they need to. when they're doing their homework. And then, lastly, I'm so happy to hear that all the math teachers that worked on this rated amplify a one except for one giving it a 2. I think that really signifies to me 626 01:56:16.140 --> 01:56:19.879 WLWV Board Room: the quality of the curriculum. So thank you so much. 627 01:56:22.640 --> 01:56:30.700 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. And I echo what I've heard up here, and I trust in the work that you've done. 628 01:56:30.710 --> 01:56:35.220 WLWV Board Room: And One thing that I was most excited about was the ability, for. 629 01:56:35.250 --> 01:56:38.470 WLWV Board Room: like Director Sloop said, for parents to be able to help. 630 01:56:38.550 --> 01:56:45.549 WLWV Board Room: I think that when it went from the old school math that we've learned to this new map that no one could figure out 631 01:56:45.860 --> 01:56:56.040 WLWV Board Room: to going back to something that will allow parents to be engaged and not feel frustrated and like they don't, you know, because I know there was many times when I was trying to help my daughters. 632 01:56:56.120 --> 01:56:59.040 WLWV Board Room: or I just say it just, is the answer, because it is 633 01:56:59.350 --> 01:57:07.389 WLWV Board Room: right, and you know you get frustrated as a parent and your your child as you. But then, how do you know? Because it's right. 634 01:57:07.570 --> 01:57:17.039 WLWV Board Room: you know, trust me right. And I think that when you have the explanations to be able to walk a child through that. Not only does it give apparent credibility 635 01:57:17.080 --> 01:57:27.669 WLWV Board Room: that maybe they would have never gotten. and it'll build the lines of communication and trust between child and parent, and maybe a a different level of confidence when they come in the classroom. 636 01:57:27.680 --> 01:57:43.449 WLWV Board Room: knowing that they can go home and get that support that maybe they didn't have in previous years. So thank you for finding something that allows us as parents to feel like we're winning to so, and lastly, my my last favorite part was, I always enjoy seeing 637 01:57:43.480 --> 01:57:51.100 WLWV Board Room: kind of the rough draft things behind the scene, and my favorite slide was the slide with all of the tally marks. 638 01:57:51.160 --> 01:57:59.780 WLWV Board Room: and the ones and twos and threes and fors. I mean in my world that just shows that you sat in a war room, and really had to figure out what was important. 639 01:57:59.860 --> 01:58:16.440 WLWV Board Room: and being that there is a race marks and pencil and all the other stuff I love to see that part of it, because I think it it. It shows kind of the due diligence that went into it. And so thank you, and I'll be supporting this curriculum to also. 640 01:58:17.960 --> 01:58:22.680 WLWV Board Room: I'll turn it over to, if that's all, and there's nothing else. I turn over to Miss Douglas. 641 01:58:24.840 --> 01:58:26.250 WLWV Board Room: Jack to shoemaker 642 01:58:29.390 --> 01:58:31.450 WLWV Board Room: chair. Taylor bye. 643 01:58:31.840 --> 01:58:34.450 WLWV Board Room: Director Vidal. Yes. 644 01:58:34.560 --> 01:58:37.759 WLWV Board Room: and Vice chair one. Alright. Thank you. 645 01:58:46.580 --> 01:59:04.279 WLWV Board Room: Yeah. Chair chair, Taylor. Could I? Could I make a comment? I just want to build off of what our director said, and just thank the 4 of you. I know, who represent far more of your colleagues who couldn't be here tonight. So first of all to the 4 of you, thank you for setting aside some summer time 646 01:59:04.440 --> 01:59:30.730 WLWV Board Room: away from your families to be here tonight. You perhaps set aside some vacation time or a fun activity to be with us tonight. Clearly your presence, you telling the story of your hard work was so important for our Board to understand the process. So thank you for your time commitment not only during the process, but also tonight, and preparing for tonight. And please extend our thanks to your colleagues who you represent. 647 01:59:30.760 --> 01:59:59.240 WLWV Board Room: And I heard that comment, Rob, you're ready to start right away. Get those materials ordered, and what'll be exciting is an invitation, I think, for our Board members to visit math next year to make that a priority in the fall, and come and see some middle school math and action, to watch some Desmo's activities, and and to be in classrooms, and to see what you're describing occurring for our students. So we'll be watching math next year. 648 01:59:59.370 --> 02:00:01.729 WLWV Board Room: So thank you so much. Really appreciate. 649 02:00:03.390 --> 02:00:08.980 WLWV Board Room: All right. moving on to the Communications department. Mr. Kelstrom. 650 02:00:10.200 --> 02:00:11.270 WLWV Board Room: All right. 651 02:00:12.410 --> 02:00:13.990 WLWV Board Room: good evening board 652 02:00:15.030 --> 02:00:27.740 WLWV Board Room: before you. You have a memo and accompanying documents regarding our school districts. Local option levy. 653 02:00:27.850 --> 02:00:38.810 WLWV Board Room: we are incredibly fortunate. in Western Muslim that we've had a local option might be in place since 2,000 And what the local option is is, it's a really additional 654 02:00:38.940 --> 02:00:48.340 WLWV Board Room: funding source for teachers. So we use it only for teachers in our school district. It currently funds about 90 teachers in our district. 655 02:00:49.970 --> 02:01:01.830 WLWV Board Room: as you can see. This is a true renewal. It would not be a an increase to the tax rate, but it would be a renewal of that $1.5 per 1,000 assessed value. 656 02:01:02.800 --> 02:01:12.770 WLWV Board Room: it is set to expire in June thirtieth of 2,025. So we are proactive and bringing this to you. as a first read tonight. 657 02:01:15.700 --> 02:01:21.160 WLWV Board Room: in terms of timeline. If we did want to place 658 02:01:21.170 --> 02:01:36.720 WLWV Board Room: local optional local option renewal on the November ballot. the deadline to file it is August eighteenth. So tonight would be a first reading and in August. we would need adopted language so that we could place it on that November 659 02:01:38.550 --> 02:01:45.749 WLWV Board Room: in front of you. You have the proposed language, the ballot title, question, summary, explanatory statement. 660 02:01:45.760 --> 02:01:50.899 WLWV Board Room: it has been vetted by legal counsel. It's very similar to language we've used in the past. 661 02:01:53.920 --> 02:02:01.050 WLWV Board Room: there are advantages to placing the the local option on the November ballot. 662 02:02:01.080 --> 02:02:07.639 WLWV Board Room: really, it provides time for planning for the district in the event that it was either passed or not passed. 663 02:02:07.730 --> 02:02:13.710 WLWV Board Room: it does also allow for additional opportunities. should it not pass to to go out again? 664 02:02:13.820 --> 02:02:24.699 WLWV Board Room: November is also obviously a presidential primary election. There will be bigger turnout. kind of cuts down on some of that variance you might see in some of those smaller special elections. 665 02:02:26.170 --> 02:02:35.630 WLWV Board Room: and then further timeline again. the local option could be placed on about any time up until it does expire in June thirtieth of 2,025 666 02:02:35.700 --> 02:02:46.549 WLWV Board Room: And and again, it's just a first reading tonight. We're here to answer any questions you might have. If you want any background on the history of the local option, the district. I'm happy to answer your questions. 667 02:02:48.330 --> 02:02:51.790 WLWV Board Room: any questions from any of the directors. 668 02:02:54.700 --> 02:03:14.169 WLWV Board Room: I was just gonna add that it also gives you time between now and our meeting in August to reach out to Mr. Kelstrom, or myself or Dr. Hughes. So you don't have to think of everything tonight, but you can digest the information. You can look at more numbers if you want to. Just kind of think through scenarios and have some of that 669 02:03:14.190 --> 02:03:22.590 WLWV Board Room: opportunity. And then in August we'll really get into looking for some direction from the board. as to what you'd like to do. 670 02:03:22.960 --> 02:03:23.870 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 671 02:03:26.410 --> 02:03:29.689 WLWV Board Room: I don't. I don't see any question. Oh, no, we do it. We do have one. 672 02:03:32.070 --> 02:03:45.750 WLWV Board Room: I'm not sure if you'll have this information right now, and if you don't, that's fine. But I was wondering if you knew some of the rates in in surrounding communities and surrounding districts. 673 02:03:45.900 --> 02:03:56.389 WLWV Board Room: certainly, so it it does vary, and not every district has a local option. I should add, we are. We are very fortunate to have that in place and Westland Wilsonville. 674 02:03:56.830 --> 02:04:16.020 WLWV Board Room: really, what it comes down to is you can't exceed the $5 per 1,000 assessed value. So we also have, of course, a capital bond in place, so that affects the rate as well. lake Oswego is the most recent example of passing a local option. They did that in May they rate 150. 675 02:04:16.230 --> 02:04:37.640 WLWV Board Room: I believe it's a dollar 85. I'm not 100% sure on that. Oh, it's like. in those days we have a total of 197 school district in Oregon, and it's only around 6 school district. How the local option, so I can hit through their lists up. What's going up how to upfront 676 02:04:37.710 --> 02:04:42.979 WLWV Board Room: And then for our So we have to 677 02:04:43.020 --> 02:04:54.549 WLWV Board Room: levy. The first one is a permanent property tax. So that's it. A $4 87 cent. Per 1,000, and that is in the last 678 02:04:55.180 --> 02:05:14.239 WLWV Board Room: at least a dozen year. we. We stay on that great, the second one, it a local option, and 2,012 is about $45 a 45 cent. Per 1,000 and then now we have $1 16 cents per 1,000, 679 02:05:14.520 --> 02:05:22.380 WLWV Board Room: and then the last it to go on levy. But a capital, and that's it below $3 per 1,000. 680 02:05:23.760 --> 02:05:24.900 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 681 02:05:28.750 --> 02:05:30.170 director. Why, it 682 02:05:30.350 --> 02:05:50.649 WLWV Board Room: procedurally, do we, for a first reading? Is it just that we have this in front of us. We don't have to. You don't need to do anything. If if you feel you've we, we're kind of giving you the opportunity to know what's coming up in August. giving you materials to read, giving you opportunity to engage in conversation with Staff, and it'll be in August when then 683 02:05:50.840 --> 02:05:54.689 WLWV Board Room: we'll get into more of a robust discussion, and you may want to weigh 684 02:05:54.820 --> 02:06:04.559 WLWV Board Room: options in terms of timeline. Think through that the advantages, the disadvantages instead of doing all of that in one meeting it's a big decision 685 02:06:04.670 --> 02:06:05.980 WLWV Board Room: we wanted to 686 02:06:06.120 --> 02:06:16.470 WLWV Board Room: give. This is just start to think about it, start to learn about it, engage with Staff. So no decision or even discussion really needs to even happen tonight. 687 02:06:16.570 --> 02:06:19.050 WLWV Board Room: give yourselves time to think through it. 688 02:06:20.170 --> 02:06:22.369 WLWV Board Room: So whenever you feel as a board that 689 02:06:22.530 --> 02:06:27.120 WLWV Board Room: you're ready to move to the next agenda item. You can certainly do that. 690 02:06:27.320 --> 02:06:28.230 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 691 02:06:28.610 --> 02:06:31.180 WLWV Board Room: Mr. Custom. We appreciate it. And 692 02:06:31.480 --> 02:06:38.879 WLWV Board Room: thank you for giving us a heads up and plenty of time to look it over and and meet with everybody. That's always what I appreciate. So, thanks 693 02:06:39.370 --> 02:06:40.050 WLWV Board Room: right. 694 02:06:40.890 --> 02:06:43.290 WLWV Board Room: hmm! 695 02:06:44.230 --> 02:06:46.590 WLWV Board Room: We'll be gone to 696 02:06:46.870 --> 02:06:51.929 WLWV Board Room: looks like we're down to the end, don't we? board meeting dates? 697 02:06:53.730 --> 02:06:57.510 WLWV Board Room: And have you open to them as one? 698 02:06:58.790 --> 02:07:00.760 WLWV Board Room: Oh, all the board retreat. 699 02:07:03.620 --> 02:07:20.820 WLWV Board Room: Yeah. So you should have the list of those dates Kelly prepared. Kelly Douglas prepared a draft for you. One of the ones. We will need a decision, for this evening from the board is around your retreat. good due. August the eighth or the ninth 700 02:07:20.920 --> 02:07:25.959 WLWV Board Room: and then, whether you wanted morning or afternoon. 701 02:07:26.330 --> 02:07:29.090 WLWV Board Room: And then you have the 702 02:07:29.570 --> 02:07:35.010 WLWV Board Room: the list of the regular meeting dates and the work sessions there. So 703 02:07:42.050 --> 02:07:45.179 WLWV Board Room: they, the the 2 dates that are up 704 02:07:45.910 --> 02:07:47.300 WLWV Board Room: for 705 02:07:48.820 --> 02:07:53.580 WLWV Board Room: for consideration, or the eighth or the ninth? Or is that the eighth and the ninth? 706 02:07:56.830 --> 02:08:06.220 WLWV Board Room: Well, part of what was a little bit of the challenge was, as we didn't have a full board to have the discussion. We didn't know how how long of a retreat you wanted 707 02:08:06.270 --> 02:08:07.909 WLWV Board Room: whether you wanted it 708 02:08:07.920 --> 02:08:17.500 WLWV Board Room: half day, retreat a full day, how much work you felt! You wanted to accomplish, what were some of the things you wanted to work on. So I think if you you could 709 02:08:17.570 --> 02:08:37.709 WLWV Board Room: start with an idea tonight, but certainly going from this evening, now that we have a chair and a vice chair. It's one of the first things I'm going to do in the morning is reach out to the 2 of you and say, what do you think, as the leaders of the Board would be helpful in terms of a board retreat, and maybe even some input from your colleagues, and then I think you could start to think about. 710 02:08:37.730 --> 02:08:43.659 WLWV Board Room: Is this a morning with, you know, break by lunch? Do we need a whole day? Do you want to break it up into 2 days. 711 02:08:43.720 --> 02:08:55.049 WLWV Board Room: So we found a couple of days that staff could be available to you and that weren't in conflict with other things going on like the leadership retreat, or some other trainings going on in the district? 712 02:08:55.230 --> 02:09:06.820 WLWV Board Room: okay. Are there any thoughts on that? Are we prepared to have a discussion, or would you rather take it offline, or I'm I'm open to having a discussion about it today. 713 02:09:07.110 --> 02:09:18.000 WLWV Board Room: I'm prepared to have a discussion. Yeah, I'm prepared to have a discussion. My my first discussion point is that I'm supposed to be out of town, both the 8 and the ninth. So okay. 714 02:09:18.260 --> 02:09:23.469 WLWV Board Room: I'm gone on the ninth. was the only day the eighth works for me, but 715 02:09:23.960 --> 02:09:25.039 WLWV Board Room: that was me 716 02:09:25.440 --> 02:09:28.289 WLWV Board Room: to stop doing like scheduling 717 02:09:28.530 --> 02:09:43.260 WLWV Board Room: cha cha cha, like, should we? Maybe Google, yeah. Knowing that director shoemaker can't be there? rather than trying to guess right? Is that okay? With, I mean and make sure that it's asking me, would you like Ms. Douglas, to 718 02:09:43.330 --> 02:09:47.490 WLWV Board Room: do a doodle poll? And 719 02:09:47.720 --> 02:09:48.530 let me. 720 02:09:48.680 --> 02:09:58.829 WLWV Board Room: because we've already got 2 dates that 2 of us are new, so that makes sense 721 02:10:00.720 --> 02:10:22.589 WLWV Board Room: on a positive note for me. I have no other conflicts with any other scope of dates that you have, and as typical, the calendar follows, you know, the first Monday and the third Monday. So, barring a a holiday or something, is where we've we started with that that draft of the calendar. Is that correct? Yes, 1 one thing that we did change 722 02:10:22.590 --> 02:10:31.039 WLWV Board Room: for all of you to give you a a little gift is. We made June's board meeting not the same week as all the graduations. 723 02:10:31.670 --> 02:10:36.560 WLWV Board Room: Thank you, Dr. Jennifer Spencer. I for making sure that happened 724 02:10:37.910 --> 02:10:44.340 WLWV Board Room: so if you'd like to approve the rest of the calendar today. Then we can do a doodle pull on the retreat. 725 02:10:44.680 --> 02:10:46.760 WLWV Board Room: I have 726 02:10:47.450 --> 02:10:51.479 WLWV Board Room: one request on one of them, if I might 727 02:10:51.630 --> 02:10:55.900 WLWV Board Room: throw in a a suggestion. Is there any way we can move? 728 02:10:55.990 --> 02:10:58.889 WLWV Board Room: The January Eighth Board meeting 729 02:10:59.010 --> 02:11:01.340 WLWV Board Room: to a different day in January. 730 02:11:08.220 --> 02:11:09.870 WLWV Board Room: which would be the 731 02:11:11.030 --> 02:11:15.710 WLWV Board Room: 15. 732 02:11:16.190 --> 02:11:17.940 WLWV Board Room: They will be the fifteenth 733 02:11:19.250 --> 02:11:21.409 to the fifteenth and the 734 02:11:22.260 --> 02:11:28.660 WLWV Board Room: oh, oh, that's yeah. that is Martin Luther. So that's a holiday. 735 02:11:30.490 --> 02:11:39.699 WLWV Board Room: If if it is a conflict just with you. Chair Taylor, is that something where you could ask the vice in the, in the art of transparency? 736 02:11:39.800 --> 02:11:42.320 WLWV Board Room: That is the National Championship day 737 02:11:42.330 --> 02:11:56.169 WLWV Board Room: for college football. Yes, I heard that, and we we've missed the game for years, and so I I brought it up last year and the year before. If we could try to find a different day to have that. 738 02:11:56.240 --> 02:12:02.830 WLWV Board Room: that is a big day for families to gather, and typically us 5 or not, with our families that are all huddled up. 739 02:12:02.930 --> 02:12:07.939 WLWV Board Room: So I was hoping that in consideration of 740 02:12:08.190 --> 02:12:26.969 WLWV Board Room: personal lives, we could enjoy the National Championship. 1 one of your options could be to forego the work session that month and make it just a regular meeting on the twenty-second and not have a work session in January. If we need a special meeting. For some reason in January, around some 741 02:12:27.570 --> 02:12:30.680 WLWV Board Room: emergency business, we can always call a special meeting. 742 02:12:30.790 --> 02:12:34.690 WLWV Board Room: I would be up for that selfishly 743 02:12:34.900 --> 02:12:54.180 WLWV Board Room: and everybody else. Don't get that many Mondays in January with the New Year, and then mark on the King. It only gives us those 2 Mondays to work with. So unless we go to a different day of the week, which we know is a challenge because we've asked board members to reserve Mondays. And does the twenty-second work for everyone? 744 02:12:54.730 --> 02:12:56.329 WLWV Board Room: Would everyone be okay with that? 745 02:12:57.540 --> 02:13:07.130 WLWV Board Room: Well, you know I am because I I part of that. I just want to double check. Right? Okay? So the 20 s would work. 746 02:13:07.620 --> 02:13:08.470 WLWV Board Room: All right. 747 02:13:09.850 --> 02:13:16.660 WLWV Board Room: I ask a question, are we able to amend the calendar during 748 02:13:16.730 --> 02:13:23.060 WLWV Board Room: the school year to add, like a work session in December, if we needed one 749 02:13:23.170 --> 02:13:35.699 WLWV Board Room: to make up for the January, or or that might not be needed. So I just wanted to ask that question. Well, how about we? Traditionally, I had the work session prior to the board meeting in the past. 750 02:13:36.470 --> 02:13:46.230 WLWV Board Room: It's been challenging to have one for December because of winter break, and so we can usually just get in one regular meeting. 751 02:13:47.700 --> 02:14:03.219 WLWV Board Room: and I think one of the other tasks that the board chair and vice chair will do, and then bring back to the full board is to think about what are the topics that we know ahead of time that you, as a board, may want for your work sessions? What are those areas that you want to do more learning about. 752 02:14:03.280 --> 02:14:08.140 WLWV Board Room: because that's the goal of work. Sessions is they're not regular meetings. They're usually learning sessions. 753 02:14:08.280 --> 02:14:11.960 WLWV Board Room: about something that might be coming up. 754 02:14:12.260 --> 02:14:13.559 WLWV Board Room: For example. 755 02:14:13.730 --> 02:14:31.189 WLWV Board Room: if you did determine something about a local option Levy, you decided you wanted a work session on that. You could. We could invite an attorney or our Cfo to present more information. or if there's some other big decision you're about to make. 756 02:14:31.200 --> 02:14:33.850 WLWV Board Room: you could have a work session prior to that 757 02:14:33.930 --> 02:14:41.289 WLWV Board Room: Sometimes the Board has done a work session with a city council, and they've done a joint 758 02:14:41.450 --> 02:14:58.269 WLWV Board Room: meeting where they've each talked about their priorities and their goals for the year, and it's about networking and partnering with a joint City Council School board. work session together when they've had mutual topics of interest to each other like a bond and facilities. 759 02:14:58.320 --> 02:15:03.319 WLWV Board Room: that they're both working on improvements within the community. 760 02:15:03.520 --> 02:15:12.340 WLWV Board Room: So that's one of the things we would do is kind of look at what are some possible work sessions. And if you then have a topic that needs to happen in December. 761 02:15:12.930 --> 02:15:18.559 WLWV Board Room: you know there could be maybe a different day of the week that you designate with that work session or something. 762 02:15:18.840 --> 02:15:24.340 WLWV Board Room: Okay. thank you. So just to recap, we'll do a doodle poll for 763 02:15:24.350 --> 02:15:29.350 WLWV Board Room: the retreat, and we will amend the board 764 02:15:29.470 --> 02:15:35.580 WLWV Board Room: meeting scheduled to have our board meeting on the 20 s versus the 8. Is that correct? Okay. 765 02:15:39.200 --> 02:15:44.429 WLWV Board Room: the eighth. And we're making the 20 s regular meeting. So no work session 766 02:15:44.940 --> 02:15:46.899 WLWV Board Room: so far in the month of January 767 02:15:49.930 --> 02:16:08.360 WLWV Board Room: a a vote or a motion. Okay? I move that we approve the 2,023, 2,024 School Board meeting calendar with a tentative date to be set for the Board retreat, and a change to the January 2,024. Meeting from January eighth to January 20. Second. 768 02:16:09.240 --> 02:16:19.279 WLWV Board Room: do we have a second. a second. any questions or discussion? No. Miss Douglas is all on you. 769 02:16:23.630 --> 02:16:24.900 WLWV Board Room: Check, just loop. 770 02:16:25.070 --> 02:16:30.639 WLWV Board Room: All right. Chair. Taylor. Director Vidal. Yes. 771 02:16:32.750 --> 02:16:33.669 WLWV Board Room: thank you. 772 02:16:36.350 --> 02:16:46.940 WLWV Board Room: and we don't have any public comment today. I think. if I'm not missing anything, I think that adjourns our meeting. 773 02:16:47.230 --> 02:16:53.559 WLWV Board Room: Thank you for putting up with my mistakes today, and we'll get better. We'll get better hanging there. 774 02:16:55.570 --> 02:16:56.280 WLWV Board Room: Okay.
