WEBVTT 1 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.870 It's oh, is he ready? 2 00:00:07.090 --> 00:00:21.520 WLWV Board Room: Good. Good evening, everyone nice to see you all. I'm going to call tonight's Westland Wilsonville School Board meeting to order. I'm gonna pass it to Mrs. Douglas. Can you call roll, please? Thank you. Director Schumacher. 3 00:00:22.950 --> 00:00:23.690 WLWV Board Room: Here. 4 00:00:23.820 --> 00:00:32.259 WLWV Board Room: director, sloop here, chart, Taylor, present Vice chair, Wyatt, here. Director Vidal here. Thank you. 5 00:00:32.840 --> 00:00:35.680 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 6 00:00:35.840 --> 00:00:42.089 WLWV Board Room: we are going to jump right into tonight's agenda, and we're going to start with 7 00:00:42.190 --> 00:00:55.079 district communications. And we have our student representatives here. There's 3 of them representing our 3 high schools, and we are gonna kick the night off with Riverside high School with 8 00:00:55.220 --> 00:00:59.029 WLWV Board Room: laurel Venegas, would you please come to the podium? 9 00:01:02.080 --> 00:01:16.819 WLWV Board Room: Good evening, board, Superintendent Ludwig. It's my honor to introduce Laurel Vannegis as our board speaker this year. Laurel's a Sophomore at Riverside High School came to Riverside, really seeking the Health Ox program, and I will let her take it away. 10 00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:29.389 WLWV Board Room: Hello, thank you to the Board and the administration for having me like Mr. Chapin said, I am Laurel Vanegas. I'm a sophomore at Riverside, and I'm the student Ambassador. 11 00:01:29.800 --> 00:01:43.229 WLWV Board Room: I am enrolled in our health occupations program, which has been really helpful to learning more about becoming a nursingist which has been my goal for a really long time. We've learned about certifications and 12 00:01:43.500 --> 00:02:12.120 WLWV Board Room: goals and education and requirements that I will need to achieve that goal. It's been a really helpful program to have already in these past few weeks. I also row competitively with, like us, week of community rowing, and I have for the past 3 and a half years, and as I come closer to my graduation, I intend on studying at the University of Washington, and with our collegiate team the new life's 102 class that we've been ass are given to us has also been really helpful with getting ideas of how to get to college. 13 00:02:12.170 --> 00:02:14.870 WLWV Board Room: And that's something I'm really looking forward to learning more about 14 00:02:15.300 --> 00:02:37.939 WLWV Board Room: and some info about Riverside. We've had a really really strong start these last 2 weeks. The classes have kicked off well, and the cell phone policy has been enforced. Very well. So students, I've noticed, and my classes have been more engaged, focused and interactive with their classmates and teachers more than what I've seen like ever. So that's very exciting to see conversations with classmates and teachers. 15 00:02:38.410 --> 00:03:06.579 WLWV Board Room: We've had a lot of vibrancy and energy, especially in a new school that has continued into our fall sports lap, and we've gotten wins from our track team, our volleyball team and our cross country team so very exciting. Last Friday we had our first school assembly where we went over fall sports school culture and had a staff versus competition. Students have one. So that was very fun coming up this week. Volleyball has a home game on Thursday against Portland. 16 00:03:06.800 --> 00:03:17.029 WLWV Board Room: Academy at 4 30 Pm. Soccer has a game on Thursday against Salem Academy at 4 15, and students are already planning on showing up and shink for them, and our Yearbook Club will be taking photos 17 00:03:17.450 --> 00:03:32.909 WLWV Board Room: the raptors are showing. Great school spirits and clubs are also up and running. We have Hosa health occupation students of America, which is a club that I will be enrolled in, and the Riverside High School with Espn. So we're excited to get rolling. So we are looking forward to great school year at Riverside. 18 00:03:40.330 --> 00:03:51.270 WLWV Board Room: and next we're going to bring up from Westland High School to give us the Westland High School, T. Beatrice Gilroy. Please feel forward to 19 00:03:52.330 --> 00:03:53.650 WLWV Board Room: feel free to come forward 20 00:03:54.400 --> 00:04:10.699 WLWV Board Room: Greetings School Board and Dr. Ludwig. Thank you for giving us this time tonight before I bring be up. I want to introduce just one more special person. Our leadership teacher Miss Blake Williams is here. So Blake. 21 00:04:11.140 --> 00:04:29.179 WLWV Board Room: so Beatrice is our school or our Asb President this year. She is a senior, and she is awesome to work with, partner with, and is a positive force of change in our school culture and our school overall. So I'm really excited for you all to get to meet Beatrice and get to know her this year. 22 00:04:31.020 --> 00:04:43.660 WLWV Board Room: Thank you, Mister Mena. Like, he said. My name is Beatrice Gilroy, and I'm a senior at West Lynn. This year I am our asp President. So I just wanted to share a little bit about what Asb has been doing on campus. 23 00:04:43.660 --> 00:05:06.069 Our work actually started before the school year began. Blake and I were in the school. Doing a lot of things. A lot of it revolved around painting so as you can see on the slide, we painted our bleachers. So we really wanted to emphasize that like, this is a student spirit section. And we really wanted to get our students excited to go to all the different games that we have on campus. 24 00:05:06.070 --> 00:05:30.860 And then also just emphasize again that spirit. You can see they're painted green and gold for the different sections of the different grades. And then below that picture Blake worked very hard to paint every porch in our school. Just labeling them, we noticed sometimes it can be hard for new students, and especially our ninth graders navigating the school. So we really wanna make it 25 00:05:31.120 --> 00:05:55.349 WLWV Board Room: clear before the school year began all the different porches, and then, on the first week of school, like Riverside, we had some class assemblies so these consisted of some talks with administration. We led the students through a fight song. We taught them some new cheers, and then we just set some expectations for the year when it comes to things like hallway etiquette and 26 00:05:55.350 --> 00:06:07.920 student spirit section etiquette. So that was really fun. We handed out some spirit points that's new. This year we're doing a spirit competition throughout the year to try and unify the different grades and the school as a whole. 27 00:06:07.920 --> 00:06:19.220 And then our sports teams I wanted to talk about are off to strong start. I got back at midnight on Friday from the Sheldon football game. So our football team is off to 2. No start. 28 00:06:19.220 --> 00:06:44.200 WLWV Board Room: Girls, soccer and boys soccer both have a game tonight. So I'm really proud of our sports teams and then on that same note we introduced a new team called Spirit Squad. So this is about 5 to 6 students from each grade level, who will be representing. They're not related to asp. But they're the students we can rely on to be the loudest in the students. Section positive role models on campus when it comes to things 29 00:06:44.200 --> 00:07:03.330 like dress up days and student section etiquette and then going to games other than football. So that's another thing, we wanna emphasize our football team has been lucky enough to be really strong. But we wanted to get a bigger student section at girls soccer and volleyball and other sports. So they're gonna help us with that. 30 00:07:03.370 --> 00:07:16.849 WLWV Board Room: And then, also on spirits, we this year remodeled the student store and bought new merch for the entire school. We're actually buying a T shirt for every lesson. High school student. You'll see 31 00:07:16.850 --> 00:07:39.760 WLWV Board Room: it on the right over there. It says, respect to roar part of the pride. So that is our slogan that we are pushing this year as a school. So we are all lions. We may come from different backgrounds. We may have different beliefs and interests, but we are all lines at Wesley High School, so respecting each other's roar, and then respecting the roar when we go out and compete 32 00:07:39.760 --> 00:07:58.839 at arts and sporting events. So, and then I just wanted to share a few things that we have on the agenda that I'm sure I'll cover in the next School Board meeting. But we have our club fair happening on Thursday. So this is an opportunity for students to come talk with club leadership. We're really hoping our ninth graders can join some clubs. 33 00:07:58.840 --> 00:08:21.579 And then some seniors, too, if they haven't joined the club yet. But that's going to be happening during life class. That's a really great opportunity. We don't have to take away any class time or lunch time. So this can take part during life class. And then something new this year is we're doing an event for each grade. So our first event is for ninth grade, and that's on Friday before the football game. So we're gonna 34 00:08:21.580 --> 00:08:43.469 WLWV Board Room: send them through a scavenger hunt. We'll have free pizza and just get them really excited for the football game. So we're hoping it ends around 6, 30, and then they can just go up to the student section and then. As you all know, we have homecoming coming up to. That will be the first week of October, and I'll share more about that in our next board meeting, but I just wanted to express 35 00:08:43.500 --> 00:09:02.579 WLWV Board Room: that we have a overall positive feeling on campus staff students. We're all excited to be back on campus. There's real positive energy when you're going down in the halls. And all our club leaders and sports teams are really excited to be back at the school. So thank you all for having me, and I look forward to speaking with you soon. 36 00:09:11.710 --> 00:09:15.709 WLWV Board Room: and last, but not least, we have 37 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:30.640 WLWV Board Room: our Wilsonville, High School student representatives and we have co Asv Presidents coming up Venetia Gonzales and Trenton Bonfilio. Please join us at the Podium. 38 00:09:32.720 --> 00:09:55.690 WLWV Board Room: Alright, Dr. Ludwig and School Board. I'm Kelly Schmidt. I'm the principal at Wilsonville, and it is my pleasure. We had our very first asp elections at Wilsonville High School this spring, and we were so fortunate that we have these 2 seniors as our Asp presidents, Vanessa Gonzales and Trent and Monfiglio Filio, and they have some words to share this evening. 39 00:09:58.200 --> 00:10:04.490 WLWV Board Room: Good evening School Board to begin. We'd like to thank you for allowing us to present and talk about the events at Wilsonville High School. 40 00:10:04.560 --> 00:10:20.690 WLWV Board Room: coming up on our calendar, is our first school assembly on the 20 s. Our new Asp counseling leadership classes can't wait to show the school what we have been working on, and we think it's a great opportunity to get students excited about the new School year. Also on our calendar are auditions for a fall musical elf which we can't wait to see. 41 00:10:21.960 --> 00:10:33.569 WLWV Board Room: This picture is a capture of the first drama. The picture on the screen is a capture of the first Drama Club meeting that occurred last Wednesday. During lunch. At this meeting they talked about auditions and tech meetings for the musical. 42 00:10:33.710 --> 00:10:59.729 WLWV Board Room: We'd also like to bring up of our fall sports, volleyball, soccer, football, and more. We've had many wins, and the student section energy has been great so far our first football game had an amazing atmosphere and so much school spirit. It was a great way to start the school the school year we had made positive. We had positive comments from multiple different teachers and students. Our band director, Chad Davies, and Athletics director, Mister Davis Davis. 43 00:10:59.730 --> 00:11:22.310 WLWV Board Room: even made the comment of saying it was the most united. They had seen the students section, the band, and the cheerleaders. We had an amazing time and couldn't agree more with these comments. Finally, we're looking forward to our senior sunrise, which is happening this Friday. Students are allowed to bring snacks, blankets, and speakers. I know many students are excited to attend, and are very grateful to the Senior Class Council for planning this event. 44 00:11:25.270 --> 00:11:26.120 WLWV Board Room: Awesome. 45 00:11:26.980 --> 00:11:43.069 WLWV Board Room: Hello, members of the School Board. My name is Trenton Bonfilio. I am one of the newly elected asp presidents here at Wilsonville High School. I alongside President Vanessia here, and the rest of our Asp Council have made great strides in making Wilsonville a better experience for both students and staff. 46 00:11:43.470 --> 00:11:54.419 WLWV Board Room: We are already seeing the positive effects of having a student government first hand in various fields. We have already accomplished a great a deal in a short amount of time, and we hope to highlight some of our accomplishments to the board. 47 00:11:54.790 --> 00:12:08.979 WLWV Board Room: Starting off our school year, we made massive efforts to increase communication with the student body specifically over the timing of events and themes at the school. One of the largest complaints we heard last year was that there was a lack of organized communication towards students. 48 00:12:09.060 --> 00:12:13.669 WLWV Board Room: especially when it comes to things like after school events, spirit weeks and sporting events. 49 00:12:13.760 --> 00:12:25.760 WLWV Board Room: Our Asp Council, in conjunction with the journalism department, Wilsonville broadcast network, has created a new weekly news video show that is shared throughout the school during our new life. 100 class. 50 00:12:26.050 --> 00:12:38.320 WLWV Board Room: It is a new and effective way to share information for information on sporting events, advertising before and after school events. General announcements and the reaction to the new videos have been overwhelmingly positive. 51 00:12:38.420 --> 00:12:43.270 WLWV Board Room: The application and utility of these weekly announcements just can't be understated. 52 00:12:43.670 --> 00:12:51.190 WLWV Board Room: Communication is not the only thing we're doing to increase student engagement. A new point of student pride has been reopening our student store 53 00:12:51.590 --> 00:13:13.249 WLWV Board Room: with help from our volunteers. In the student leadership program we have reopened a previously out of Commission student store. The store is a great way for students to represent their school with fresh designs and a regularly rotated lineup of goods that fit upcoming themes for sporting events. The new store is also great for students of all financial backgrounds to get fun clothing to represent their school. 54 00:13:13.880 --> 00:13:16.350 WLWV Board Room: This new store. 55 00:13:16.520 --> 00:13:33.429 WLWV Board Room: We saw how useful the store was at our first football game, where we sold items that matched the beach out theme at affordable prices. Everyone who has who wanted to was able to participate in the theme for that week the Wilsonville student store is a great way to unite students with a stylish peril for all. 56 00:13:33.960 --> 00:13:40.549 WLWV Board Room: after everything Asb Council has already done this year, our community of parents took things to the next level. 57 00:13:40.650 --> 00:13:50.599 WLWV Board Room: At the very beginning of the year several parents, along with several students and me, got together, and we painted the entire away team bleachers and the locker room tunnel. You can see that on the 58 00:13:51.810 --> 00:13:52.849 WLWV Board Room: up there. 59 00:13:54.560 --> 00:14:01.529 WLWV Board Room: Uhhuh. The the previously chipped down and worn out paint has been, 60 00:14:01.550 --> 00:14:10.930 WLWV Board Room: given a new coat of paint, and the volunteer turnout at this event was excellent, and we were able to repair years worth of weather, damage and general wear, and only 2 evenings of work 61 00:14:11.280 --> 00:14:22.870 WLWV Board Room: upkeep of our facilities is a source of pride here at Wilsonville, and our parent colleagues went above and beyond. With this one we are excited to hold many great events in the future in our fresh looking stadium 62 00:14:23.020 --> 00:14:38.509 WLWV Board Room: between Asp Council, better communication, video announcements. Reinvigorated student spirit involved new and improved facilities, and the new student store. We are excited to see where this year heads, and I'd just like to thank the board for your time. 63 00:14:42.480 --> 00:14:43.280 WLWV Board Room: We got. 64 00:14:46.460 --> 00:15:08.530 WLWV Board Room: Thank you guys. That was wonderful. And I wanna say, it takes a lot of courage to get up and stand in front of a room, and this being your first board meeting of many that will will be in front of you. I just wanna say great job, and you all spoke with so much confidence. So I wish I would heck that type of confidence when I was your age. I didn't have it so my hat goes off to you. 65 00:15:08.640 --> 00:15:11.670 WLWV Board Room: Anything anyone else like to 66 00:15:13.210 --> 00:15:20.820 WLWV Board Room: I just want to say thank you to the 4 of you stepping up in these kinds of positions, we know, takes 67 00:15:20.820 --> 00:15:43.779 WLWV Board Room: courage. It also takes extraordinary amount of time, and you're all busy. Whether you're a sophomore or seniors. You have a lot going on. You have busy lives. Whether it's looking at colleges or work, or your school schedule, and then to also lead a school and keep on top of what everybody else is doing and coming with a positive attitude. 68 00:15:43.780 --> 00:16:04.689 WLWV Board Room: It's just a tremendous gift of your time and dedication that you're giving this year. So thank you in advance for all that we know you're gonna do. And we look forward to every month hearing from you. So thank you for stepping into this leadership position this year. We couldn't be more proud of each of you, but also incredibly grateful for the time you're giving to this. So thank you. 69 00:16:05.550 --> 00:16:08.829 WLWV Board Room: Any of the other board directors have anything 70 00:16:08.990 --> 00:16:25.349 WLWV Board Room: I just wanna say, we we really do look forward to this. This is. This is important for us to hear from students, and we don't. We don't have as many opportunities to hear from students as as maybe we would like sometimes. And so we really appreciate you're doing that, and we appreciate your leadership. 71 00:16:28.840 --> 00:16:48.189 WLWV Board Room: Yes, I just like to echo everything everyone said. But, we do really enjoy hearing from you. And we we really do want to know what's going on at the high schools and want to know how we can help, and what we can do to make a difference for all of you, and we thank you and 72 00:16:48.240 --> 00:17:03.419 WLWV Board Room: You are leaps and bounds ahead of where I was at your age, and I'm being very serious. So take that experience and help that want you into your future. So thank you so much for being here 73 00:17:05.589 --> 00:17:26.259 WLWV Board Room: nothing alright, and before we move on to the rest of our board agenda, this is an opportunity that we always extend to the students to be able to exit if you would like, so you don't have to stay for the rest of the meeting. But you are obviously more than welcome to, and before you either decide to leave or stay, I can tell you that I need to get my gear right. 74 00:17:26.390 --> 00:17:42.369 WLWV Board Room: So, looking at all that swag up there. My daughter's a senior at Westland High School, so I'm always in just Westland gear, mainly. But I don't like going to the Wilsonville game wearing Westland lion pride when I'm there to cheer for the wild cats, right or Riverside. And so 75 00:17:42.960 --> 00:17:48.149 I owe you all an apology, because I only we're lying here. But I'm gonna get my game right this year. 76 00:17:48.180 --> 00:18:02.770 WLWV Board Room: and my gear is gonna match my game. So I'm coming to the games to cheer on and the right stuff. So I'm like, I promise you that. Alright. So this, if you'd like to stay, you're more than welcome. If you'd like to get going and enjoy the rest of your evening. It's sunny out. You're you're free to do that, too. So thank you guys. 77 00:18:21.440 --> 00:18:31.679 WLWV Board Room: alright that's gonna take us into district recognitions, and we're gonna have Dr. Pryor and Dr. Barb Soissen 78 00:18:31.740 --> 00:18:36.260 WLWV Board Room: come forward to the podium, and we're looking forward to hearing from you. 79 00:18:52.040 --> 00:19:03.809 WLWV Board Room: Dr. Soissin and I are going to take turns to do our introductions. I have the incredible privilege of introducing our new principal of Lowry primary school, principal Christie Freeman 80 00:19:03.850 --> 00:19:10.370 WLWV Board Room: Christie. I remember first meeting her in 2,018, when she came to our district from the Miami-dade 81 00:19:10.370 --> 00:19:34.609 WLWV Board Room: area, where she had been incredibly successful teacher and teacher, leader and with an incredible enthusiasm for mathematics. And we first hired her to be the instructional coordinator at Trillium Creek primary school, because, in addition to having great teaching skills, she was also, or is also, by cultural and biliterate, which was an incredible asset for one of our dual language schools. 82 00:19:34.660 --> 00:19:39.920 WLWV Board Room: and she was a very strong leader there and then. 83 00:19:40.030 --> 00:20:07.859 WLWV Board Room: was ready to be an administrator before we had a position open, so briefly served as an assistant principal in the Reynolds school district until the very day we had a position open, and then we stole her back the following year, where she was the assistant principal at Meridian Creek, Middle School, and then this year being hired to be the principal of Lowry primary school just a few weeks before school started. We were just 84 00:20:07.860 --> 00:20:22.189 WLWV Board Room: thrilled to have her move into this role and join the primary team once again. If you've had a chance to get to know Principal Freeman, you would know her to be not only incredibly passionate and 85 00:20:22.610 --> 00:20:32.229 just deeply committed to every single student, but she's also a relationship builder. In fact, I think director Vidal got to meet her at the first. 86 00:20:32.670 --> 00:20:56.399 WLWV Board Room: Then she held, which was a an ice cream meet and greet with the principal, where she said she felt like a Disney character cause. The Lowry community came and formed a line, and each person got got to meet her that day. But just we know she's gonna thrive in this role. She's already. I worked incredibly hard, as you can imagine coming on late in August to hire a partner who is a new instructional coordinator for the school. 87 00:20:56.400 --> 00:21:10.030 WLWV Board Room: to get to know staff and students and begin setting this stage for an incredibly successful role. So we just feel so fortunate to have a leader of this quality join our team. And it's my absolute pleasure to introduce you to Principal Freeman. 88 00:21:20.250 --> 00:21:28.260 WLWV Board Room: We do we? Do you want to go first, or do you want me to? No, you go ahead. Go ahead. 89 00:21:28.490 --> 00:21:35.610 WLWV Board Room: Well, I could echo everything that Dr. Pryor said, and I remember vividly our first interview with 90 00:21:35.640 --> 00:21:44.640 WLWV Board Room: Principal Freeman when we were interviewing her for Trillium Creek and all. It was as as we got her in that position, and she left the building. I think we looked at each other and thought. 91 00:21:45.260 --> 00:22:09.610 WLWV Board Room: this person's gonna be a principal. Pretty soon. We just we just knew that she had that instinct, that ability, but also just all those kind of intuitions around leadership that set people apart. So we're just glad that she's stayed with us and wants to invest in this district as much as we want to invest in her as a leader in our school district, one of the first days of school I was making my rounds 92 00:22:10.010 --> 00:22:28.420 WLWV Board Room: and wandered into Lowry, and in the office, I said, I'm just looking for Principal Freeman, and they said, she's in a classroom, and I remember thinking, of course she is, because as you mentioned Dr. Pryor. That's exactly where she'd wanna be is with kids, and I found her in a kindergarten room sitting on the carpet 93 00:22:28.420 --> 00:22:44.310 WLWV Board Room: with a little one who is having a hard time on their first day of kindergarten, and so that the teacher could continue to do what she needed to do. Principal Freeman was right there. Responding to a student and unsolicited, the teacher came up to me and said, We just love our new principal. 94 00:22:44.610 --> 00:23:01.140 WLWV Board Room: So we're just thrilled that you're at the helm at Lowry, and we know that you do so much to build capacity among others and partnership. And we're excited for what's gonna happen at Lowry? With you right there as principal. So thank you. 95 00:23:02.380 --> 00:23:06.580 WLWV Board Room: I make you guys proud. Anyone else. 96 00:23:08.510 --> 00:23:12.710 WLWV Board Room: Well, I'd just like to say congratulations and good luck this year, and 97 00:23:12.880 --> 00:23:21.050 WLWV Board Room: I can't wait to. I've walked through Lowry a couple of times, so can't wait to come out and see your work so congratulations. 98 00:23:25.140 --> 00:23:48.289 WLWV Board Room: One thing that was on my list I forgot to tell you which is another great benefit, is principal. Freeman is also an acting board member of the Awaly, the Oregon Association of Latino administrators. And so she is an incredible supporter of Latina and Latino administrators who are looking to spread their wings and move into new leadership positions in schools. So she serves them that role too awesome. 99 00:24:02.590 --> 00:24:19.100 WLWV Board Room: Good evening. Well, it's an honor, and actually just plain fun to get to introduce y'all to Nolly Sturmeyer. Nali is the principal at Athy Creek Middle School Brand New Building, Athy Creek Middle school. 100 00:24:19.100 --> 00:24:33.730 and Nali has a very strong background as a special education teacher in the Sherwood School district. She also has been at Wilsonville High School as an assistant principal. 101 00:24:33.730 --> 00:24:47.419 WLWV Board Room: and in that role she was especially interested in supporting language arts. But literacy and growth with literacy, especially as students get ready to move on to 102 00:24:47.630 --> 00:25:05.650 WLWV Board Room: post K. 12. And what can they actually do with their reading and writing? She also is a real champion of multilingual learners, and has worked with the eld program and supported and looked at. How do we actually develop that 103 00:25:05.940 --> 00:25:08.900 WLWV Board Room: much more? Nali is 104 00:25:08.910 --> 00:25:25.679 WLWV Board Room: energetic. And lest you think that when someone works in our school district, and does very well. They move on to a next position. The next position. I think you've seen it in writing, but do know that the interview involves having. And if it's 105 00:25:25.680 --> 00:25:39.150 WLWV Board Room: in the summer, a video of a classroom teacher with the teacher present, and part of the interview is looking at how the candidate gives feedback 106 00:25:39.280 --> 00:25:40.430 WLWV Board Room: to a teacher. 107 00:25:40.590 --> 00:25:49.889 WLWV Board Room: And we watch for what does that candidate notice about the students, all students with the learning what's put before them. 108 00:25:50.350 --> 00:25:58.249 WLWV Board Room: Then we actually act as a staff, and we want to see what a 109 00:25:58.500 --> 00:26:06.650 WLWV Board Room: early staff meeting on a given topic is going to be. What? How is that going to be professional learning and not just a meeting? 110 00:26:06.660 --> 00:26:21.200 So lest you think that we kind of move people along? It became very, very clear to the parents and the staff members who were part of that, that this is someone who we really want to work in our community. 111 00:26:21.450 --> 00:26:34.719 WLWV Board Room: And she's embraced with energy and with creativity, the working with the new space. But one of the things that I most admire about Nolly is what you don't see. 112 00:26:35.540 --> 00:26:49.740 WLWV Board Room: she had dug into data before the first day of school. As you may know, our leadership retreat that has about 80 of us working, you know, for 2 days we focused on data. 113 00:26:50.350 --> 00:27:08.470 WLWV Board Room: what we use, how we use it, how it's linked to our actions, how we look at it for all student groups what we look for with improvement, and Molly started with her new assistant principal at the Retreat, and so, in starting with this new building, where 114 00:27:08.480 --> 00:27:10.589 WLWV Board Room: there were a few little things about 115 00:27:10.760 --> 00:27:37.070 WLWV Board Room: the parking lot and traffic, and all of those things at the beginning of the school year, and the track is not quite finished. And we have the play structure that do you know that 31 students can comfortably get on that net play structure at one time? So, aside from things like that, the actual part that you don't see is this focus on learning and improvement for all students. 116 00:27:37.840 --> 00:27:43.720 WLWV Board Room: Staff love her. One of the first days of school. One of our teachers, who's 117 00:27:43.820 --> 00:27:57.290 WLWV Board Room: taught in our district for quite a while, and who rides her bike to school every day, was so busy that she brought all of her materials and things for the students, but left her shoes 118 00:27:57.690 --> 00:28:14.279 WLWV Board Room: at home and had just kind of the, you know, the toe clip shoes that that you wear that might be kind of hard to clump around a building in. But when I saw her she said, Look, I got shoes. Do you know that Nolly has extra shoes in her office? 119 00:28:15.160 --> 00:28:34.619 WLWV Board Room: So the other adventure has been to find out all of the things that care for staff that care for children that she actually has in her office, and you will have to have her open a few drawers when you go to visit as was said about Principal Freeman. You will not find her in her office. 120 00:28:34.620 --> 00:28:47.010 She is in classrooms, she is with students. She has had conversations with students and with families. We have students who are ready to work beyond eighth grade math. And that's one of the 121 00:28:47.010 --> 00:29:09.289 WLWV Board Room: challenges she's worked with already this school year. There are students who need some supports that she has already worked with this school year. So that balance remember with Nolly, there's there's what you see, the fun, the adventure, just the strong relationships and warmth. And then someone who really is working with 122 00:29:09.310 --> 00:29:15.890 WLWV Board Room: data, improvement and student learning all the time, so I'm proud to welcome 123 00:29:15.970 --> 00:29:17.200 WLWV Board Room: Molly Stromeyer. 124 00:29:24.080 --> 00:29:27.230 WLWV Board Room: Get to just walk away. 125 00:29:27.400 --> 00:29:30.070 Would any one like to share any comments? 126 00:29:31.420 --> 00:29:56.309 WLWV Board Room: I would just like to say, I'm so first proud of our district for elevating these wonderful women of color into leadership positions. So to Principal Stromeyer and principal Freeman congratulations to both of you first to Principal Stromeyer. I know you are such a good advocate for your excellent advocate, for your students and your fellow teachers at your school. So congratulations. 127 00:29:56.310 --> 00:30:15.329 and then to Principal Freeman. I saw the the very long line at Lowry, and I waited in that line while you there you are. I'm like, where is she? While you really connected with each of the families and really met them where they were and talked to each family member. So we really appreciate that at our school. So thank you so much. 128 00:30:17.700 --> 00:30:23.760 WLWV Board Room: Director Shoemaker. Want to thank you in advance for all the hard work you're going to put in as as a hero. So 129 00:30:24.050 --> 00:30:35.420 WLWV Board Room: But you know, II really believe in the leadership of schools, and I and I believe the impact that you will have on your staff and your students. So thank you for that. 130 00:30:37.580 --> 00:31:00.089 WLWV Board Room: Anyone else. No? Well, I just want to say congratulations to you. It'll be weird, not seeing you at Wilsonville High School when I visit, but I always, I'm interested to see with Director Shoemaker. I have to say, as an ex principle to another incoming principal. So I'm always listening. But just congratulations. And I wish you the best of luck this year on your journey. Thank you. 131 00:31:01.130 --> 00:31:22.479 WLWV Board Room: Okay, Dr. Ludwig. One more and I was just going to say, principal Stromeyer is another person that we've been watching for a number of years along with Christie just being so steadfast and strong as assistant principals working hard as a team. Your capacity to know students so deeply has always 132 00:31:22.480 --> 00:31:33.199 WLWV Board Room: just baffled me for one, because high schools are large, but also just such admiration. There'd be so many times I would wander over to Wilsonville High School, walking around with 133 00:31:33.200 --> 00:32:00.479 WLWV Board Room: the team, and you knew every student beyond that you knew their context, and may probably even their schedule where they should be. They were still in the hallways. But it was just this deep care and connection, and outreach to families and follow up with families. So you're, gonna I know, be tremendously missed at Wilsonville High School, but that also makes your leadership Aty Creek. So much more powerful because your reputation goes with you. 134 00:32:00.730 --> 00:32:24.840 WLWV Board Room: and already one of the first days of schools. I was wandering around Athe Creek, failing in my attempt to help students open their new lockers, and others were rescuing me, cause I was even messing it up. You know, right, left, right, or something, and already she just knew every inch of that facility as if she had been part of the planning team. And where's Pat Mcguff? 135 00:32:25.220 --> 00:32:54.349 WLWV Board Room: We both commented so many times that you're the right leader at the right time to move into this space. But how quickly you caught up to speed as to what was happening, what needed to be done to help staff feel comfortable moving in attending to their needs, but also getting ready for that first day of school is just remarkable. It's a Testament to your dedication and commitment, but also to just how quickly you learn something and figure out the leadership moves that are necessary. So 136 00:32:54.640 --> 00:33:11.879 WLWV Board Room: that's a precursor to what is coming ahead. We're just in for something absolutely tremendous and magical at at Athe Creek. So thank you. Thank you both for stepping into these roles, and we're just so excited for your school communities to have you in the leadership there. 137 00:33:20.970 --> 00:33:31.839 WLWV Board Room: Right moving on to board and superintendent reports, and I'll give these guys a few seconds to to get out, and 138 00:33:32.300 --> 00:33:33.609 we'll start moving on 139 00:33:37.490 --> 00:33:48.330 WLWV Board Room: and leading us off. Director, Shoemaker. Thank you. I first want to ask Pat, are, is it retinal scans for the lockner half the new school. 140 00:33:48.670 --> 00:34:13.999 WLWV Board Room: Okay? Alright. I know that Dr. Lug will talk about some of the new beginning of of school activities. So I'm not going to go through the the things that we are fortunate to be able to attend. As the as the year started off, I just wanna say my noticing in our communities people I've talked to how excited they are to start school and and how much it reinforces my belief that there is no more hopeful activity than sending your kid off to school. 141 00:34:14.070 --> 00:34:20.909 WLWV Board Room: and I know that our community believes that in that it's such an aspirational thing to send your kid to school. 142 00:34:21.060 --> 00:34:31.779 WLWV Board Room: and it takes an an enormous amount of trust and belief to do that. So I'm I'm grateful for all the work that goes into making school start. But I'm also grateful to our community for entrusting 143 00:34:32.020 --> 00:34:34.549 WLWV Board Room: us in the care of their kids. That's it. 144 00:34:36.989 --> 00:34:38.090 WLWV Board Room: director sloop. 145 00:34:40.300 --> 00:34:42.750 WLWV Board Room: Yeah. So, August. 146 00:38:17.210 --> 00:38:17.900 Hi. 147 00:39:44.490 --> 00:39:45.649 WLWV Board Room: Director Vidal. 148 00:39:46.040 --> 00:39:49.930 WLWV Board Room: thank you so much. Thank you to Director sloop 149 00:39:49.990 --> 00:40:04.869 WLWV Board Room: for recognizing suicide. Awareness month. We know that suicide is the second highest cause of death amongst young people in the United States, at 20% of teens experience 150 00:40:04.900 --> 00:40:29.339 WLWV Board Room: suicide, ideation, and 9% of teens attempt to take their own lives, and 40% of gender diverse teens attempt suicide. And this is a rate that has not decreased in the past 6 years. So to our young people out there, I would just like to say, Stay here, and we love you. 151 00:40:29.380 --> 00:40:45.599 WLWV Board Room: On a a happier note in August I had the privilege to attend the back to school event with our teachers at Meridian Creek Middle School, and I will have to tell you I have never witnessed 152 00:40:45.780 --> 00:41:02.070 WLWV Board Room: any any school spirit like that in my life. And so I would like to ask our community, how do we, as a community, reflect that outstanding school spirit our teachers have back on to them. How do we support our teachers 153 00:41:02.070 --> 00:41:27.010 in the way they support our kids? In that vein? I'd like to welcome all of our new principals and teachers, and really congratulate those teams at Riverside High School and A/C Creek Middle School. These facilities really exhibit our district's commitment to our students to provide them with an extraordinary look. 154 00:41:27.010 --> 00:41:43.480 learning environment that they can learn in now, but that generations will learn in for years and years to come. So that's the reason why we build these buildings is so generations of our children can learn in a safe 155 00:41:43.480 --> 00:41:48.259 WLWV Board Room: and clean environment. So thank you. That's it. 156 00:41:48.780 --> 00:41:49.440 WLWV Board Room: Hello! 157 00:41:50.910 --> 00:41:53.779 WLWV Board Room: 5 vice chair, Wyatt. 158 00:41:55.380 --> 00:42:20.000 WLWV Board Room: Well, thank you, Director Vidal, for that perfect lead in to, I think, what is going to become my broken record over the next 3 months, which is this amazing opportunity our community has right now to reflect back that support on our teachers and staff, and that is by renewing our local option levy. And so at the last School Board meeting we unanimously approved 159 00:42:20.000 --> 00:42:31.410 putting that local option levy on the ballot this November, and since then the 5 of us have formed a pack to support that initiative. And so the Pax name. 160 00:42:31.410 --> 00:42:52.930 WLWV Board Room: Dr. Taylor and I were brainstorming. You know. How do we have this pack? Reflect how we feel? And so the pack's name is, we love Wesley Wilsonville schools, because that is how we all feel, and it's how we are approaching going into this campaign. And the reason it's important is because our local option levy funds, 90 teachers and staff positions. 161 00:42:52.930 --> 00:43:16.410 And so when our voters vote. Yes, on this levy, we're going to preserve those positions which preserves the class sizes that make our schools so exceptional. So I would invite everybody to get involved with this campaign. We get to be advocates. We get to be vocal about saying, vote, yes, our school district staff cannot 162 00:43:16.410 --> 00:43:26.999 and so I think over the next couple of months you'll see the 5 of us as well as others who are interested out there, just encouraging our community 163 00:43:27.000 --> 00:43:51.510 to reflect back that support and that love we have for our teachers and our staff. Our website is, we love WL uv.com, so you can go there to learn more. I just posted a nice picture of Director Taylor on there today. With, you know his words of support. You can make a donation. If you'd like to support our pack. You can learn more about this, and then next week, at our work session. 164 00:43:51.510 --> 00:44:13.119 WLWV Board Room: We'll be talking more about the measure! Why, it's so important and sharing more information. Out to our community. So that's my board report and for the next couple of months. I think we'll all be talking about how this is so critically important if we wanna preserve these incredible schools that we've had an amazing start to the school year with. So thank you. 165 00:44:14.380 --> 00:44:19.000 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. Vice chair. Wyatt, I guess, is my turn 166 00:44:19.340 --> 00:44:21.290 WLWV Board Room: for a second. 167 00:44:21.500 --> 00:44:24.109 WLWV Board Room: yes, that's perfect lead in. 168 00:44:24.330 --> 00:44:36.940 WLWV Board Room: as they've all kind of led in. And now into me. I don't know about the picture thing. No, it wasn't. It's not a lovely picture. She exaggerates a little bit, but thank you for putting that up there. 169 00:44:37.010 --> 00:44:38.639 WLWV Board Room: I 170 00:44:38.840 --> 00:44:43.080 WLWV Board Room: I wanted to use my time to to thank 171 00:44:43.930 --> 00:44:49.769 WLWV Board Room: the board. And part of it is I've had a really busy summer. When I took on this 172 00:44:49.820 --> 00:44:53.919 WLWV Board Room: this role as chair, I knew that my summer was jam-packed with travel. 173 00:44:54.030 --> 00:45:04.439 WLWV Board Room: and I was in Miami. I was in Korea. I was in Vietnam. I was in Montana, and I and I spent very little time this summer in the State of Oregon. 174 00:45:04.490 --> 00:45:21.100 WLWV Board Room: and during that time. as vice Chair has. Why, it has spoke about. We have this local option, levy renewal. We have all of these filings that need to be done. We have the website that needs to be up. We have a pact that needs to be developed, and I did none of that. 175 00:45:21.560 --> 00:45:24.800 WLWV Board Room: And so my hat goes off to you. 176 00:45:25.170 --> 00:45:27.870 WLWV Board Room: I didn't know you had such a motor. 177 00:45:28.040 --> 00:45:39.310 WLWV Board Room: and I didn't know how incredible you are, and I just wanna thank you publicly for all that you have done, and working with dr. Lugwood and 178 00:45:39.380 --> 00:45:41.850 WLWV Board Room: director shoemaker writing 179 00:45:41.880 --> 00:45:47.909 WLWV Board Room: newspaper articles and all of it. I just want to thank you guys all. 180 00:45:48.000 --> 00:45:54.160 WLWV Board Room: And the way you've rallied around me to support me is is tremendous, and I couldn't have asked for anything 181 00:45:54.180 --> 00:46:10.700 WLWV Board Room: more. And I wanted that to publicly be said, because I think it. It's people don't really understand the amount of work that has to go into doing a local option levy. I'm not really a fan of politics. So for me to like dive in, that is, it takes a lot for me. 182 00:46:10.770 --> 00:46:20.110 WLWV Board Room: whereas I wouldn't have been able to do this without your support. So I wanna thank you for that. Thank you so much. I, too, attended 183 00:46:20.330 --> 00:46:25.490 WLWV Board Room: back to school night, and I went in with a plan. I thought I was going to get up there and say these words of wisdom. 184 00:46:25.510 --> 00:46:32.309 WLWV Board Room: and then I got the opportunity to watch the video of Emilio and his family. And you know 185 00:46:32.720 --> 00:46:41.340 WLWV Board Room: one. It was a story, a story of perseverance, and a story of a family fighting for their child. But what it also was was a reflection on 186 00:46:41.810 --> 00:46:49.600 WLWV Board Room: some of the just massive levels of dysfunction in public education and watching the State of New York, and how they treat people. 187 00:46:49.840 --> 00:47:05.279 WLWV Board Room: and it was disturbing to me. And and so everything that I had to speak about. I just kinda crumbled it up and threw it out and spoke from the heart and and one of the things. I said it shouldn't be a challenge for anyone, whether it be Westland School district or 188 00:47:05.350 --> 00:47:11.740 WLWV Board Room: the State of New York, to find a home for their child where they have an opportunity to learn. 189 00:47:11.830 --> 00:47:18.549 And so I was taken back by that and some of the challenges and some of the things that you kind of see as a bait and switch or 190 00:47:18.620 --> 00:47:23.210 WLWV Board Room: you, kinda you know there was a mic left on during a moment where 191 00:47:23.300 --> 00:47:26.979 WLWV Board Room: one of the Department of education. 192 00:47:27.110 --> 00:47:32.310 WLWV Board Room: Ladies, was speaking to one of her colleagues, and she didn't know she was on a hot mic. 193 00:47:32.500 --> 00:47:35.680 WLWV Board Room: and I've made the hot mic mistake before. It's never good. 194 00:47:36.400 --> 00:47:40.719 WLWV Board Room: And so she got caught on a hot mic, and it was horrible. 195 00:47:41.010 --> 00:47:49.150 WLWV Board Room: horrible, horrible, horrible! The things that she had to say in the things that in the hurdles that she was just throwing in front of this family for no good reason. 196 00:47:49.480 --> 00:47:58.360 WLWV Board Room: And so my take away is that you know as chair and as a person trying to represent this community. I hope that I can be a hurdle remover 197 00:47:58.560 --> 00:48:04.069 WLWV Board Room: versus someone who's creating a pathway that is more difficult for us to serve 198 00:48:04.100 --> 00:48:06.699 WLWV Board Room: our kids and our parents and our staff. 199 00:48:06.990 --> 00:48:17.230 WLWV Board Room: And so I'm gonna end on that note. But I just wanna rethink you guys all for rallying around me while I travel then back now, so I can repay the favors. And 200 00:48:17.570 --> 00:48:21.910 WLWV Board Room: I will stop talking and pass it over to Dr. Ludwig. 201 00:48:31.980 --> 00:48:34.390 WLWV Board Room: Here we go the next slide. Thank you. 202 00:48:36.030 --> 00:48:49.659 WLWV Board Room: So you all have spoken about the the start of school, so I just have a few pictures here that hopefully capture this, the best of the spirit of how we all experience the start of school. You can see pictures on the 203 00:48:49.950 --> 00:49:02.990 WLWV Board Room: I don't know if it's right or left from where you're seeing, but we've got Emilio's family there from our welcome back assembly of the the whole. All of the employees of the school district who are able to attend that leaning into our theme of elevate. 204 00:49:02.990 --> 00:49:21.250 WLWV Board Room: How we wanna think about this school year? Going from our current state to our ideal state and the steps that we need to take in between. There's chair. Taylor, who did speak incredibly moving way, departing from the text, so to speak, and I still have staff who 205 00:49:21.520 --> 00:49:27.039 WLWV Board Room: found me, and have found many of your words, Director Taylor, that connected for them. 206 00:49:27.480 --> 00:49:46.000 WLWV Board Room: You can see the the launch of the early morning. We were at 5360'clock, sending bus drivers out with donuts and and cheers as they went off to pick students on their first day, and then the other pictures are just some of the scenes that we captured. Overall. I mean, just incredibly proud of 207 00:49:46.240 --> 00:49:54.570 WLWV Board Room: our students coming to school, so ready and excited to be a friend, to learn something new. 208 00:49:54.600 --> 00:50:09.619 WLWV Board Room: to get into class, and to do this thing called school, which has this incredibly emotional component as well as intellectual component to it. Proud of our staff for bringing their full selves re-energized and recommitted 209 00:50:09.690 --> 00:50:29.180 WLWV Board Room: to whether it's a new school building for them, or new partners in the work, and their new team members, or a new staff member to our district, bringing their full selves, and then our leaders, who did an enormous amount of work all through the month of August to to make that start of school go so smoothly and so well. 210 00:50:29.610 --> 00:50:43.279 WLWV Board Room: and then also to our parents, who love their children dearly, have the greatest hopes and aspirations for them, and it's our responsibility to live into that and to be the trusting staff that they deserve. 211 00:50:43.770 --> 00:50:50.429 WLWV Board Room: The next slide. Just a few more pictures there and you can see there's a 212 00:50:50.890 --> 00:51:01.070 WLWV Board Room: Athe creek up on the top right there again, a beautiful building, and students just moving right into that new space as if they'd been there all along. 213 00:51:01.250 --> 00:51:25.580 WLWV Board Room: I do wanna mention that we have curriculum nights coming up. So I wanna thank the board who are finding spaces in some of their evenings to be at some of those schools. So thank you for making your way into those schools, and albeit as many as I can. We do have 7 primary schools all in one night, so we can't clone ourselves, but we'll try and get around to. That's on the fourteenth, as many as we can, so 214 00:51:26.050 --> 00:51:31.219 WLWV Board Room: curriculum nights coming up, and I know that we'll want to report on those next month, and how those went. 215 00:51:32.890 --> 00:51:36.910 WLWV Board Room: and then in terms of just opening school next slide. 216 00:51:37.050 --> 00:51:51.209 WLWV Board Room: While we don't have dates on here, I do want to let the Board know that we do have 4 facility dedications that you will be invited to, and whether you can all make it, or one or 2 members of the Board can make it. 217 00:51:51.210 --> 00:52:18.620 WLWV Board Room: these will be to dedicate either remodeled or new spaces. So we'll have Riverside first in September and then in October. Wilsonville, High School Auditorium Athy creek and the human center. So you'll get more information. As we develop those and land on the dates, and then hopefully, between the 5 of you. You can kind of tag team who could be at which one? And we'd love to have at least one board member at each of those dedications, to say a few words. 218 00:52:20.390 --> 00:52:32.559 WLWV Board Room: and then next slide. I want to thank Director Sloop and Director Vidal for speaking about suicide awareness month. I also want to mention that it is death, awareness, month. 219 00:52:32.650 --> 00:52:34.230 WLWV Board Room: And 220 00:52:34.360 --> 00:53:01.290 WLWV Board Room: one of the reasons that we bring forward these ideas of awareness is because it's a powerful opportunity for us to make sure that misconceptions or stereotypes are brought to the forefront, so that we can correct those misconceptions or stereotypes, give face and voice and experience to who people are. 221 00:53:01.630 --> 00:53:03.920 WLWV Board Room: and that when those diminish 222 00:53:04.000 --> 00:53:21.069 WLWV Board Room: that's when attitudes and behaviors do become more positive and caring and understanding, and the more that we dig deeper into understanding one another. We we raise more awareness and and grow as a community. 223 00:53:21.490 --> 00:53:35.770 WLWV Board Room: I'm proud to say that this year we have our first American sign language, Asl class at Riverside High School. It was quite a feat to secure a teacher. There's 224 00:53:35.770 --> 00:53:46.559 WLWV Board Room: not a lot of folks who go into Asl as a language development. So we hope we're going to change that statistic by growing more students 225 00:53:46.560 --> 00:54:06.649 WLWV Board Room: who then can be budding Asl teachers themselves or support the community. So we're really excited for what it means for that group of students, for this new teacher and that relationship, but even more powerfully for our community. It sends a message, of valuing elevating 226 00:54:06.650 --> 00:54:17.270 WLWV Board Room: the strengths of our deaf community. So thank you for persisting and not closing down that class. But till the ninth hour, finding someone so appreciate that. 227 00:54:18.280 --> 00:54:19.420 WLWV Board Room: Next. 228 00:54:21.100 --> 00:54:38.460 WLWV Board Room: I've given this commitment to the board through this literacy renewal process to give you updates each month. And this is kind of that big picture you you're familiar with, that. Renewals actually are a long process that take that extend over multiple years. 229 00:54:38.490 --> 00:54:41.879 WLWV Board Room: and that the adoption of the curriculum is just one 230 00:54:42.080 --> 00:55:14.149 WLWV Board Room: 1 point in time. Within this long process it it has a place in a space, and it's important. But there's a lot that happens before and after. So we're in this point of time right now, in the this school year where we are assembling a team of teachers and beginning to look at the curriculum. That will be a part of that renewal process. While we're lingering on the slide. I wanna say there's been some comments and or questions about the early Literacy grant. If you recall, our State did give school districts, grant funding for early literacy. 231 00:55:14.440 --> 00:55:20.110 The application is going to be released the first of October. So we're not 232 00:55:20.370 --> 00:55:32.469 WLWV Board Room: delaying that or not not interested. We just don't have the application yet. We did hear that there are some agencies out there that have created their own applications which we've been cautioned to 233 00:55:32.530 --> 00:55:48.390 WLWV Board Room: avoid. It's only odes application that we can use. So we do have to wait until October first. That's the window for submitting the grants that opens in December. So while we'll get the application. October. The window for submitting the Grants is not until December. 234 00:55:48.890 --> 00:55:54.360 WLWV Board Room: giving districts time to fill those out, and then, the deadline being January eighth. 235 00:55:55.000 --> 00:56:13.850 WLWV Board Room: So even though it's taking a while to get that grant application in. And then the money is set aside for every district. It's a non-competitive Grant. So we have our portion. It's sitting there. We can go ahead and spend it even now, because we know we will get it. It's just a matter of time of getting our application in 236 00:56:13.920 --> 00:56:41.109 WLWV Board Room: Some of the qualifiers for that grant are things like professional development which we've shared with you. We have a lot of that in place this year, not only with the training that I described for you of our K 2 teachers around literacy, but also through this this process that we're doing as well as any coaching or coaches. That's also qualifiers for the grant. So we have 237 00:56:41.830 --> 00:56:48.149 WLWV Board Room: plenty that we can submit. We do have to also have a 25% matching, which is no problem. So 238 00:56:49.040 --> 00:57:01.640 WLWV Board Room: and next slide. So again, this will start to become familiar when we drill deep into this year. We're in this section now of September through November, and this part speaks to the training 239 00:57:01.730 --> 00:57:13.970 WLWV Board Room: that we are providing of full day sessions of early literacy workshop. We had teachers in the summer, and those who couldn't make it in the summer will get time this year. 240 00:57:14.080 --> 00:57:15.850 WLWV Board Room: and so next slide. 241 00:57:16.950 --> 00:57:20.020 WLWV Board Room: Oh, other side. By the way. there we go. 242 00:57:20.150 --> 00:57:35.700 WLWV Board Room: Just very briefly. I share this with you last month. What does what did those workshop sessions look like those who took it this summer, and those who will take it. Now, in September and October. These are the components of that from the Oregon literacy framework 243 00:57:36.100 --> 00:57:49.469 WLWV Board Room: you saw this last month, and the next slide. In addition, we will go into some of those challenges that students may have with reading, one being around dyslexia, so there will be some specific instruction around that. 244 00:57:50.320 --> 00:57:52.060 WLWV Board Room: and then the next slide. 245 00:57:53.270 --> 00:57:59.159 WLWV Board Room: The other part that's happening in this space of time is, we have put together the literacy adoption team. 246 00:57:59.440 --> 00:58:15.220 WLWV Board Room: and they're gonna begin as early as this month they'll have a session and then quite a few sessions throughout October, November, December. So right now. There are 11 two-hour sessions planned with this team at this time. 247 00:58:15.330 --> 00:58:27.710 WLWV Board Room: And these are some of the components that they'll work through. We've talked about these before. They will do research. They'll look at the data of the district and the schools to identify strengths and areas for improvement. 248 00:58:27.970 --> 00:58:36.200 WLWV Board Room: They'll work with the Ode process for curriculum renewal. They'll look at rubrics for evaluating materials. They'll query 249 00:58:36.240 --> 00:58:39.210 WLWV Board Room: staff teachers and specialists 250 00:58:39.900 --> 00:58:44.170 WLWV Board Room: so develop a set of look fors. What are those things that 251 00:58:44.300 --> 00:58:55.420 WLWV Board Room: the qualities of really strong reading materials? They'll make sure that the ode early literacy framework is a point of reference and also the list of approved materials. 252 00:58:55.960 --> 00:58:59.270 WLWV Board Room: They'll interview the publishers or evaluate materials. 253 00:58:59.440 --> 00:59:06.749 WLWV Board Room: We'll have sessions for parents to give input and feedback, and they'll be the team that will then collect and interpret that information. 254 00:59:07.330 --> 00:59:14.809 WLWV Board Room: It may be that some members of that team or others pilot some of the materials. If that's something they decide they'd like to do. 255 00:59:14.980 --> 00:59:21.959 WLWV Board Room: and it all culminates in this final, then evaluation and and selection and recommendation that comes before the board. 256 00:59:24.510 --> 00:59:47.100 WLWV Board Room: Okay, and next month I'll have a little bit more to share with you. Just wanna give on an update on our buses. The last 2 board meetings I shared with you that we were doing some workaround routes in light of national bus driver shortage increased in inflation and cost that just asked us to take a look at how we were doing with our own routes. 257 00:59:47.200 --> 00:59:52.019 WLWV Board Room: We did make some changes in terms of an update 258 00:59:52.590 --> 01:00:02.650 WLWV Board Room: Pleased to say, we have enough buses. We do have enough drivers. It's where we're continuing to recruit is substitute drivers. 259 01:00:02.660 --> 01:00:12.740 WLWV Board Room: just like a school district and organization. Invariably one or 2 or 5 or 10 people are out for any reason, and you need to make sure there's a robust 260 01:00:13.120 --> 01:00:32.350 WLWV Board Room: field of perspective folks who can fill in. So they're still recruiting. There's an amount of time that takes to train, and then for folks to have someone partner with them on a route. So they learn how to ride bus routes until they're ready to go solo. So we're still working through that process. We did make adjustments. 261 01:00:32.540 --> 01:00:44.049 WLWV Board Room: I will tell you the challenge in Westland Wilsonville, and maybe in spots of Oregon, is that despite everything we've done and really working with efficiencies. When a flagger stops you. 262 01:00:44.180 --> 01:00:52.090 WLWV Board Room: you have to stop, even if you're a school bus, and we have a lot of work going on in parts of Westland and Wilsonville. 263 01:00:52.120 --> 01:01:20.910 WLWV Board Room: and areas here and there, whether it's electric lines or the Beckman Dip road that is now being fixed, parts of Wilsonville road that are being fixed. Parts of 60 fifth. So we've got those kinds of components as well as work that's being done in Wesley, and that will also be done on Willamette Falls drive. So we're working really hard. Wanna tell our parents. But there's just components of traffic and construction that everybody just gets caught up in 264 01:01:21.430 --> 01:01:23.470 WLWV Board Room: next slide 265 01:01:26.380 --> 01:01:53.030 WLWV Board Room: we shared with the last board that we were doing a District Safety Review. If you recall that that our consultants, true North, who had done our initial safety audit and review. About 8 years ago we brought them back to see the progress that we've made to do. Another review of all of our facilities and our protocols and processes. And so they did that thorough, comprehensive review. In the spring 266 01:01:53.030 --> 01:02:06.429 WLWV Board Room: they submitted quite a dense report to us. A district report as well as a report on every school. And so I wanna thank the District Safety leadership team. We've spent hours this summer going through that 267 01:02:06.450 --> 01:02:31.160 WLWV Board Room: all of those reports and unpacking the feedback. And now we're in the process of looking at some categories and priorities. We'll take those back to True North to get some more consultation with them around some of those priorities. And then, as we think about, how do we make those changes? A number of them will require resources. And so that is something that 268 01:02:31.180 --> 01:02:34.900 WLWV Board Room: in the last capital bond the Board appointed 269 01:02:35.030 --> 01:02:59.360 WLWV Board Room: a defined task force that included included community members, parents to look at some of those recommendations, and then, as parents put some recommendations forward for the next for the capital bond, and that's how we got some of the list of items on this, the 2019 bond around some safety changes. And so that will be something. We'll come back to you as a board in the next few months. 270 01:02:59.780 --> 01:03:11.879 WLWV Board Room: To consider down the road thinking about again appointing a community safety task force that could be in an advisory capacity to look at some of the components 271 01:03:11.990 --> 01:03:14.659 WLWV Board Room: of that report and help us think about 272 01:03:14.740 --> 01:03:40.289 WLWV Board Room: where we might want to go for some items on the next capital bond. So it's down the road. But I just want to kind of give you this timeline that we're working through. So you can see that there's a progression of actions. And where we are we're kind of in that middle purple section right now, where we've got the report back. We're going through all of that information and then determining some next steps. 273 01:03:45.050 --> 01:03:56.950 WLWV Board Room: And then last, I'm just going to pass this down. This is just some information that individually, you know about as well as collectively in the last board. 274 01:03:57.100 --> 01:04:20.489 WLWV Board Room: that I've shared with you some information. We have a policy. Ifca, about 20 First Century Schools councils. You may have received sometimes some public comment, or maybe an email. I've been able to provide some information to you, either individually or to some of you who are on last year's board. We have a district practice around how we implement the policy 275 01:04:20.730 --> 01:04:49.570 WLWV Board Room: what we worked on this summer, and I wanna thank director sloop for tremendous amount of time. We spent several meetings on this giving feedback based on what she had also heard in the community, and what we had heard around how to have clarity around the implementation practices. So this is just the AR, the administrative regulations, which is how we implement the policy and so putting it in writing where our community can find it cause. Some of the feedback we heard is 276 01:04:49.870 --> 01:05:06.160 WLWV Board Room: they had to get verbally the description of how we implemented the policy, and that it was kind of hit and miss where to find that information. So collectively with our Director of Communications, Andrew Kelstrom, we wrote down 277 01:05:06.220 --> 01:05:19.280 WLWV Board Room: the process for that policy. And it's now it's on the website. Principals have it. They're not going to know anything different. This is what they've been doing. But now it's just in a place that's written on the website. 278 01:05:19.690 --> 01:05:43.739 WLWV Board Room: Of course we had our legal counsel. Look over it as well. It meets statute. And what I'm really proud of, too, is that as our Ptas and Ptos really lean in to some of those national standards for family and school partnerships, and our work with them, that it really increases our opportunity to work with more parents more transparently 279 01:05:43.740 --> 01:05:59.740 WLWV Board Room: through those monthly Pto Pta forums and share more around academic goals and progress, social, emotional goals and progress, and not just events and activities that connect families to school. But the impact of 280 01:05:59.900 --> 01:06:09.789 WLWV Board Room: a lot of the efforts that parents put into helping schools and how it impacts students. So just wanted you to have a copy of that, it's on the website. But you also have a hard copy right now. 281 01:06:10.570 --> 01:06:12.609 WLWV Board Room: and just the last slide. 282 01:06:12.650 --> 01:06:23.279 WLWV Board Room: because we've mentioned the Berniers a few times, and the powerful impact that their family story made on our district that we carry with us. I just love this this quote. 283 01:06:23.440 --> 01:06:29.969 WLWV Board Room: and it's become kind of a a theme for us this year as well. So thank you. That's the end of my report. 284 01:06:40.100 --> 01:06:41.620 WLWV Board Room: Thank you, Dr. Ludwig 285 01:06:49.310 --> 01:06:50.060 WLWV Board Room: second. 286 01:06:52.110 --> 01:07:05.019 WLWV Board Room: and that will move us into the consent agenda, which will require board action. and we're gonna bring forward our director of human resources, Miss Shia Walter, and take us through the personnel report. 287 01:07:06.670 --> 01:07:10.189 WLWV Board Room: and we approve the consent. Agenda. 288 01:07:10.440 --> 01:07:20.450 WLWV Board Room: Oh, you know what you didn't have to come forward. Thank you from you. So we have a motion to approve the consent. Agenda. 289 01:07:20.540 --> 01:07:23.100 WLWV Board Room: do we have a second. I'll second 290 01:07:23.280 --> 01:07:25.130 WLWV Board Room: second the motion. Okay. 291 01:07:26.780 --> 01:07:28.090 WLWV Board Room: any discussion? 292 01:07:29.050 --> 01:07:34.110 WLWV Board Room: Alright. Can you call the boat? Mrs. Douglas? Certainly, Director Schumacher. 293 01:07:36.260 --> 01:07:37.130 WLWV Board Room: Yes. 294 01:07:37.530 --> 01:07:45.629 WLWV Board Room: director, so I cher Taylor. Vice chair. Why, I, Director Vidal. Yes, thank you. 295 01:07:47.830 --> 01:07:58.980 WLWV Board Room: And Shyla, I I'm sorry for the rudeness. I wanted to hear you speak, but they decided to to stop it. Alright public comment. So 296 01:07:59.490 --> 01:08:03.930 WLWV Board Room: I kinda wanna pivot a little bit. I know that might sound scary, but it's not 297 01:08:04.190 --> 01:08:14.419 WLWV Board Room: public comment. I'm going to give you just a quick introduction to how we run public comment here. We made some changes, I think, during Covid to, because the Board 298 01:08:14.560 --> 01:08:16.600 WLWV Board Room: room we used to fill with a lot of 299 01:08:16.609 --> 01:08:20.669 WLWV Board Room: topics that were off topic. And so we went to 300 01:08:21.819 --> 01:08:30.789 WLWV Board Room: 2 main sessions and kind of a third, where you know, the first session was for our community members that were addressing things that happen to be on the agenda. 301 01:08:30.859 --> 01:08:50.629 WLWV Board Room: The second public comment comes later in the evening after we do board comment and we open it up for our community members who wanna talk about things, who might not be on the agenda? Or that might not be on the agenda, and then, if there was time, we would open it to non community members to speak and share what was on their heart. 302 01:08:50.660 --> 01:08:54.609 And so tonight we only have one speaker. We have 303 01:08:54.899 --> 01:08:57.599 WLWV Board Room: nothing before our first session. 304 01:08:57.640 --> 01:09:06.159 WLWV Board Room: and then we do have something. A speaker who wants to address us, based off of a topic that's not on the agenda, but in the spirit of 305 01:09:06.229 --> 01:09:24.859 WLWV Board Room: of the public comments. Section I would be open to allowing that second session which would start at 8 15, that person to be able to just speak during this session, and she is a community member. And that way, if they wanna get about their evening, they're not waiting an extra 40 min with the board. Be okay with that. 306 01:09:26.010 --> 01:09:26.750 WLWV Board Room: Okay? 307 01:09:27.020 --> 01:09:28.549 WLWV Board Room: Good. 308 01:09:29.020 --> 01:09:50.410 WLWV Board Room: So I'll read the formalities and and what the etiquette is, and the expectations of the board. And first off we wanna thank you for for coming and and sharing with us public time. Comment is a time for you to share what's on your mind with us? Not a time for us to respond. We ask that you're courteous and respectful. 309 01:09:51.450 --> 01:10:02.419 WLWV Board Room: This is not a time for you to use this moment as a soapbox to address the community. But it's a time for you to address us and allow us to listen to you. 310 01:10:02.490 --> 01:10:11.400 WLWV Board Room: Our speakers tonight or our speaker tonight, is very familiar with that process, so I won't continue to go down the formalities. 311 01:10:11.620 --> 01:10:20.399 WLWV Board Room: So, in the spirit of that, I'd like to call up Mrs. Sarah Lorenz. 312 01:10:22.020 --> 01:10:51.469 WLWV Board Room: and you have 3 min. Yeah. good evening. And thank you. Board members. My name is Sarah Lorenz. I have a student at Westland High School, and I also have a 19 year old, son. He graduated one year ago. He's doing fantastic. He did kindergarten through eighth grade at our Westland schools, and then, unfortunately, our family had to make the very difficult decision to pull him out of this school district, and to place him into a more inclusive 313 01:10:51.470 --> 01:11:08.169 WLWV Board Room: school for him. And what I mean by that is what I want to speak on tonight. That school was much more inclusive, and that they they acknowledged, and they celebrated dyslexia awareness. That is something I've been passionate about now in sharing with the school district for 12 years. 314 01:11:08.380 --> 01:11:25.019 I am so hopeful, and I come with a real heart of gratitude and thanksgiving. I appreciate all of you listening to me for this last year we've been more involved in this conversation, and I'm really excited about removing some of these hurdles. If you will. Moving forward this year. 315 01:11:25.020 --> 01:11:49.539 WLWV Board Room: I wanna just clarify as Barb Soisson and I were talking about this evening before the meeting started. You know, what does that awareness look like? And so I wanna just kind of simplify it. It really comes down to 2 pieces. The first piece would be creating awareness within our classrooms within our schools, the teachers, the the librarians, and Dr. Ludwig and I already had this chat via email last week. She is on. 316 01:11:49.540 --> 01:12:03.460 I am so grateful. Thank you. She's going to be emailing all of our teachers and our librarians and being proactive and taking those steps so that students like my own feel really well understood. We remove those stigmas 317 01:12:03.460 --> 01:12:22.209 WLWV Board Room: and and students really and teachers really can support these students. The second piece is where I could really use your support, and that would be getting real direct communication from the school district, from you the top out to every parent and every family in our school district. 318 01:12:22.210 --> 01:12:51.489 I would propose that you do like our governor does. Every year in the State of Oregon. She has made a proclamation that October is dyslexia awareness month. This is celebrated nationwide and actually worldwide. And I'm so happy that she has gotten behind it. I'm asking our school district to do the same, to rise up, to elevate, if you will, and to create a proclamation that here in our school district every October will be dyslexia awareness month 319 01:12:51.490 --> 01:13:22.080 one in 5 people are dyslexic. So that's 20% of our population and 20% of our students, myself included. So with that direct communication that goes out to all of our parents. Please have that include the early signs of dyslexia, because that would have been an absolute game changer for our family, and have it also reflect all of those beautiful strengths of dyslexics I have shared before. You know there are so many famous dyslexics and fun stories, and of course, all the kids, their favorite 320 01:13:22.080 --> 01:13:35.440 WLWV Board Room: devices, their iphone that was created by Steve Jobs, the famous dyslexic. So the more that we can really help these feel kids feel understood. We can provide a lot of truth and hope for their future. Thank you. 321 01:13:39.690 --> 01:13:50.989 WLWV Board Room: And just to do a spot check. Was there anyone in the room who may have wanted to address the board, but just may not have seen the sign up sheet, or forgot to sign up 322 01:13:51.370 --> 01:13:55.150 WLWV Board Room: any show of hands. Okay. thank you. 323 01:13:59.890 --> 01:14:02.960 WLWV Board Room: That takes us in the board business. 324 01:14:04.820 --> 01:14:10.270 WLWV Board Room: and we're going to start with the Department of operations. We're going to bring forward Mr. Pat Mcco. 325 01:14:10.430 --> 01:14:11.509 WLWV Board Room: how you doing 326 01:14:15.320 --> 01:14:17.490 WLWV Board Room: good. It's Mcuff. 327 01:14:18.180 --> 01:14:19.920 So 328 01:14:22.140 --> 01:14:43.000 WLWV Board Room: I tonight we're bringing to you applicants for the long Range planning committee. As you know, the Long Range Planning Committee currently has 2 vacancies. That committee is appointed by the Board to be actually an advisory committee to the board on 329 01:14:43.190 --> 01:14:53.279 WLWV Board Room: really 2 topics, one. They have performed tremendous work on the bond oversight side of 330 01:14:53.530 --> 01:14:56.219 WLWV Board Room: of their duties. 331 01:14:56.310 --> 01:15:04.419 WLWV Board Room: They've now shifted as the bond is starting to wind down to look at long range planning again 332 01:15:04.480 --> 01:15:13.950 WLWV Board Room: and make recommendations for not just the immediate future bond that may go out. But long range. 333 01:15:14.030 --> 01:15:21.919 WLWV Board Room: 5, 1020 years. Look ahead at growth for the district. So we had 9 candidates. 334 01:15:22.080 --> 01:15:35.219 WLWV Board Room: I have not had the opportunity to meet any of them, but I would like to, at least, read their name and ask them to at least wave their hand if they're here. Brian Hall. 335 01:15:36.920 --> 01:15:47.320 WLWV Board Room: Mr. Hall is not here. David rulers, I hope I got that right. David is not present. Jeff Sinclair. 336 01:15:48.870 --> 01:15:53.209 WLWV Board Room: Mr. Sinclair is not here. Kirsten Solberg. 337 01:15:55.290 --> 01:15:56.140 WLWV Board Room: Okay. 338 01:15:57.410 --> 01:15:59.000 Mary Petager. 339 01:15:59.190 --> 01:16:05.019 WLWV Board Room: I know she's here. Mary is an incumbent has reapplied 340 01:16:06.040 --> 01:16:07.510 WLWV Board Room: Miriam Panoli 341 01:16:10.500 --> 01:16:12.600 WLWV Board Room: Ryan Ingersoll. 342 01:16:15.700 --> 01:16:17.040 WLWV Board Room: James Dunn. 343 01:16:18.900 --> 01:16:22.319 WLWV Board Room: And last, is Jeffrey Michael Wiser? 344 01:16:23.730 --> 01:16:31.249 WLWV Board Room: Okay, well, with that I just wanted to check, because I'd not had an opportunity to meet any of the candidates. So 345 01:16:31.420 --> 01:16:34.340 at this point I would turn it back to you. 346 01:16:35.040 --> 01:16:41.630 WLWV Board Room: Chair Taylor, you could. You could have called me something different, too. 347 01:16:41.960 --> 01:16:45.710 My apologies back. 348 01:16:45.740 --> 01:16:58.459 WLWV Board Room: all right. So we are going to move into giving a vote as a board on each of the candidates, and I just want to announce that each 349 01:16:58.540 --> 01:17:04.159 of the Board members had an opportunity to review all of the applications and go through them thoroughly. 350 01:17:04.200 --> 01:17:08.220 WLWV Board Room: And we did get an opportunity for some of these 351 01:17:08.260 --> 01:17:20.909 candidates who may be at home listening to read the comments that you sent in. We all were provided a copy of that, and so we got to hear your words and review your application. So I want you all to know that 352 01:17:21.080 --> 01:17:27.950 WLWV Board Room: And at this point the there's 2 positions that are looking to be filled. 353 01:17:28.230 --> 01:17:50.030 WLWV Board Room: and we're going to be voting on both of those positions, and we will start with position one. And so oh, go ahead. So we we did let applicants know that if they came tonight they'd each have 3 min to address the board. Did you want to do that now, or do you want to read the directions? First? I was going to read the directions first, and then I was going to give each candidate. I just 354 01:17:50.080 --> 01:18:07.650 WLWV Board Room: Freeman. No, it's okay. I appreciate that because I do have a tendency to to move along quickly. And so the way the process will work is that there's 2 positions that are looking to get filled. There's position one and position 7 inside of your binders. You will see cards, the green card for you to vote 355 01:18:07.840 --> 01:18:13.609 WLWV Board Room: at rank th. The the 2 individuals that you want to vote for 356 01:18:13.770 --> 01:18:17.689 WLWV Board Room: in order. I think we're doing 2 candidates per per position. 357 01:18:18.070 --> 01:18:26.869 WLWV Board Room: and put them on your card. We're going to fold them. We're going to pass them down to Mrs. Douglas, where she'll be able to tally those votes 358 01:18:26.980 --> 01:18:36.389 WLWV Board Room: and let us know who will be the winner of those particular positions. The blue card will be for position 7. You'll do the same thing. 359 01:18:36.450 --> 01:18:41.770 and we'll pass those down to Mrs. Douglas. To tally the votes again 360 01:18:41.820 --> 01:18:50.709 WLWV Board Room: so, and we just want you to understand the process that it will go through. If, in the event of a tie, we have a second card in your folder, where you'll be able to revote. 361 01:18:50.890 --> 01:18:55.790 WLWV Board Room: and we will pass those down, and the results of that will be final. 362 01:18:56.010 --> 01:19:11.060 WLWV Board Room: We also want to extend the opportunity for each candidate to have 3 min to speak and address the board, and if there are any candidates who I think there's only one in the room, and and that's Mary. So, Mary, would you like to come forward? 363 01:19:21.370 --> 01:19:40.009 WLWV Board Room: So good evening, and I really appreciate the opportunity to address you in person? I know and I wrote a speech I do want to get, but II have served on the board, as was mentioned for the past 3 years, and it has been an honor to do that. It has been a pleasure for me, both professionally and personally. 364 01:19:40.010 --> 01:19:54.690 WLWV Board Room: I really enjoyed. I've been the liaison for the Wilsonville performing Arts Center. And II feel like a little bit like a nerd when I go back, and I say all these exciting things, and I go out and tell everybody about it. So on a personal level that's been very rewarding to me. 365 01:19:54.940 --> 01:19:59.409 WLWV Board Room: I also really feel like service is important. It's something. That's how I was raised. 366 01:19:59.480 --> 01:20:23.909 WLWV Board Room: And you know, a few years ago, when I first applied it was something I really wanted to do to get back to my community. And so that's why I'm reapplying. Cause I feel really important that that giving is important. My 2 children went through the district from first grade to twelfth grade of the things that they're able to do. Now, what I've seen, their opportunities they've had. And I really I feel that that's what the district has given them. And that's something I wanna give back. 367 01:20:24.230 --> 01:20:46.260 WLWV Board Room: I really enjoyed learning about the long range planning and the the overseeing, the bonds, paying attention to what's happening in all the buildings, thinking about the future. Thinking about, you know. 2040 years. I don't. I don't plan to be. I don't think I'm gonna be around at that point, but really thinking about how this district has done such a good job of thinking forward and 368 01:20:46.560 --> 01:21:09.199 WLWV Board Room: not everything is easy, and we have very difficult decisions to make sometimes. And I know there's gonna be a lot of changes that come. But I feel like with what I've learned on the long range planning committees to be able to see a little bit behind the scenes of how much we have are doing and how we're capable of making change for the future. I am a college professor. So I see, students, you know, as they progress to a different level. And 369 01:21:09.200 --> 01:21:18.409 WLWV Board Room: mit Ctl, and II just am so amazed by students themselves and and what they can do. And II want to give that back to the district. So that's my big thing about service 120. 370 01:21:18.480 --> 01:21:20.390 I know 371 01:21:21.420 --> 01:21:22.360 WLWV Board Room: I'm 372 01:21:23.710 --> 01:21:41.780 WLWV Board Room: it means a lot to me. And that's why I just wanted to have the opportunity to speak to you today. And just so you can hear my words and and have that opportunity to say, I would like to continue to serve. However, you decide tonight, I will continue to serve in my community in whatever capacity I can. So I appreciate the opportunity. So thank you. 373 01:21:42.170 --> 01:21:43.080 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 374 01:21:44.680 --> 01:21:45.360 And 375 01:21:46.290 --> 01:21:56.169 WLWV Board Room: So what we'll do now is we'll take a few minutes to be able to give the directors an opportunity to 376 01:21:56.250 --> 01:21:58.300 WLWV Board Room: write their votes for each position. 377 01:21:59.330 --> 01:22:03.409 WLWV Board Room: and we can do this one of 2 ways. We can just go ahead and put our votes 378 01:22:03.450 --> 01:22:07.509 for position one and 7 on each card, and pass them down at once. 379 01:22:07.850 --> 01:22:10.429 WLWV Board Room: That would allow Ms. Douglas time to 380 01:22:10.490 --> 01:22:20.900 WLWV Board Room: to go through the tallies for the position one, then she'll already have them in her hand for position. 2. Would you all be open to that? And if there's a tie we come back. 381 01:22:21.040 --> 01:22:23.430 WLWV Board Room: Would that work, or do you want to do them independently? 382 01:22:23.710 --> 01:22:34.900 WLWV Board Room: Could I could be that outcome of Number one could affect Number 7? Got you so maybe they'll do one at a time, and that's why I count on people smarter than me. 383 01:22:34.920 --> 01:22:42.960 WLWV Board Room: So we will start with position one done this several times we will start with position one 384 01:22:43.260 --> 01:22:49.450 WLWV Board Room: and then we will move to position 2 after we get those results. 385 01:23:13.880 --> 01:23:27.079 WLWV Board Room: For those watching from home who may have just tuned in. Now the board members are writing their top 2 choices for position, one of long range planning committee and submitting those for a tally. 386 01:23:35.250 --> 01:23:43.020 WLWV Board Room: and I think we would ask either chair Taylor or Vice chair, Wyatt, to observe. Ms. Douglas, open these and tally them. 387 01:23:44.520 --> 01:23:50.899 WLWV Board Room: You. I'm I'm okay. You've been doing a lot of heavy lifting. Let me go ahead and just just walked down. 388 01:24:56.030 --> 01:24:57.690 WLWV Board Room: And the results are in 389 01:24:59.450 --> 01:25:03.030 WLWV Board Room: and position. One 390 01:25:03.480 --> 01:25:05.730 WLWV Board Room: has been granted to 391 01:25:06.280 --> 01:25:09.140 WLWV Board Room: Mary Petinger. Congratulations. 392 01:25:10.260 --> 01:25:11.120 WLWV Board Room: Yeah. 393 01:25:16.820 --> 01:25:19.360 WLWV Board Room: we now will take a few minutes and 394 01:25:19.890 --> 01:25:22.600 cast votes for position number 7. 395 01:27:23.000 --> 01:27:32.420 WLWV Board Room: The results have come in and for position 7. And we actually have a three-way tie. 396 01:27:32.850 --> 01:27:44.840 WLWV Board Room: And so what happens now is we have another card in your binder. and you will now write down one name 397 01:27:45.160 --> 01:27:47.270 WLWV Board Room: on your card 398 01:27:48.300 --> 01:27:54.760 WLWV Board Room: of the 3 people that have been in this three-way tie, and that the 3 candidates who 399 01:27:54.920 --> 01:28:02.450 WLWV Board Room: of came out in a tie with 3 votes apiece is David Ruralis. 400 01:28:03.930 --> 01:28:12.890 WLWV Board Room: Kirsten, Solberg. and Ryan Ingersoll. Those are your 3 options. and we just need one name. 401 01:29:19.290 --> 01:29:23.609 WLWV Board Room: We do have a final result. And so the 402 01:29:23.810 --> 01:29:26.580 WLWV Board Room: position number 7 has been granted to 403 01:29:26.810 --> 01:29:34.520 WLWV Board Room: David Ruellis. So congratulations if you're watching David and welcome to a long range planning committee. So 404 01:29:35.190 --> 01:29:38.400 WLWV Board Room: so I'd like to make a motion for the appointment. 405 01:29:38.490 --> 01:29:50.039 WLWV Board Room: And so I move to appoint Mary Pettinger to position Number One for the long range planning committee and to appoint David Ruells to position Number 7 for the long range planning committee. 406 01:29:50.770 --> 01:29:52.380 WLWV Board Room: I'll second. 407 01:29:54.990 --> 01:30:05.000 WLWV Board Room: We can call a vote. Thank you, Dan Shoemaker. Excuse me, director, shoemaker. 408 01:30:05.170 --> 01:30:13.239 WLWV Board Room: thank you. Director, sloop, I chair, Taylor, Vice Chair, Wyatt and Director Vidal. 409 01:30:13.340 --> 01:30:17.370 WLWV Board Room: Yes, thank you like, if you 410 01:30:20.930 --> 01:30:25.920 WLWV Board Room: it's a it's been a day for name blunders we've 411 01:30:26.440 --> 01:30:35.850 this is to God's honest truth. We started with 2 named blunders on Director Vidal's name. We've had me call 412 01:30:35.930 --> 01:30:38.629 WLWV Board Room: Pat Mcgo and not Pat Mccoy 413 01:30:39.250 --> 01:30:46.280 WLWV Board Room: think that's and Shoemaker and I called him Schumacher a couple bored weeks ago. 414 01:30:46.480 --> 01:30:55.230 WLWV Board Room: So it's been one of those days. But humor us, please. alright 415 01:30:58.850 --> 01:31:03.419 Right, this takes us into school board directors. 416 01:31:03.910 --> 01:31:09.730 WLWV Board Room: That's us. 1 s. Here, let me get organized. 417 01:31:16.630 --> 01:31:25.510 WLWV Board Room: All right. So yeah, Taylor, while you're looking for that memo could I just also thank the people who applied, even though they didn't get the vote? 418 01:31:25.820 --> 01:31:35.100 WLWV Board Room: there are many other opportunities to serve. We'll have budget committee openings, and sometimes people step down off of the committee 419 01:31:35.170 --> 01:31:49.720 WLWV Board Room: unaware of. You know, when they sign up that they can't finish their term. So those of you out there who submitted applications. Please look for other ways to serve, and we'd love to have you in other capacities on other committees. So thank you for being willing to 420 01:31:50.060 --> 01:32:00.500 WLWV Board Room: to serve a large planning committee whether you were chosen tonight or not, and I. And I hope that the the people who did apply to understand that we do go through it pretty thoroughly, which is 421 01:32:00.710 --> 01:32:11.909 WLWV Board Room: why we have ties and multiple ties. So we we do take a really good look at what you write on your application and your experience, and so on and so forth. So thank you. 422 01:32:12.140 --> 01:32:14.269 WLWV Board Room: and thank you for that. Dr. Ludwig. 423 01:32:15.670 --> 01:32:23.639 WLWV Board Room: Moving into the board section one of the things that we did at our board retreat was. 424 01:32:23.670 --> 01:32:26.229 WLWV Board Room: we came up with 425 01:32:26.650 --> 01:32:28.609 some short-term goals that 426 01:32:28.670 --> 01:32:31.789 WLWV Board Room: that we wanted to focus on over the next year. 427 01:32:31.820 --> 01:32:48.339 WLWV Board Room: And so I'm I'm gonna read to you just a quick memo about the work that we have done. But the Wes on Wilsonville School Board directors, are excited to announce the setting of our own independent short term goals for the 2,02324 428 01:32:48.340 --> 01:33:08.510 WLWV Board Room: school year. These goals were the result of a collaborative body of work with feedback from the district communities we serve and the school district, we feel it is important for the board to set short term goals that are aligned to the district's long term goals. Furthermore, the Board wanted to ensure that these goals are measurable, achievable. 429 01:33:08.960 --> 01:33:10.640 WLWV Board Room: and optimally timed. 430 01:33:10.840 --> 01:33:21.040 WLWV Board Room: The Board wants to provide a strong foundation for the school district to make continual progress by setting metrics that are aligned in support of the district improvement plan. 431 01:33:21.060 --> 01:33:34.539 WLWV Board Room: And one thing I want to note about the District Improvement Plan. You can review that at The Weston Wilsonville School district website. And it's in the about Us. Section under District 432 01:33:35.280 --> 01:33:36.960 WLWV Board Room: integrated plan. 433 01:33:37.040 --> 01:33:41.940 WLWV Board Room: and some of the things that you'll hear as short-term goals for us. 434 01:33:42.200 --> 01:34:05.679 WLWV Board Room: And we're we're gonna talk about this as a board, too. If there's wordsmithing or anything that needs to be changed. This is the our opportunity in front of you, the public to Wordsmith, and address those goals so it could take us some time. We thought about them in advance. But we all have our own ideas. So sometimes you get to witness those play out in front of you in real time 435 01:34:05.860 --> 01:34:22.029 WLWV Board Room: the metrics that we speak of, the measurables are going to align to that district integrated plan. And so those are already defined, and some of that direction is coming from the Ode, and you can correct me if I'm wrong there. 436 01:34:22.040 --> 01:34:37.979 WLWV Board Room: As far as targets that we're looking to hit in different categories. So rather than us make lengthy goals that we're so specific, and had all the tactics tied into the strategy, we left that to alignment for what the State is telling us that 437 01:34:38.060 --> 01:34:48.909 WLWV Board Room: we need to be hitting and growing in these different areas. So just know that if you wanna know the metrics that we're trying to heat to achieve. You can find them on our website in those sections. 438 01:34:48.980 --> 01:34:51.379 WLWV Board Room: And there's some really good information in there. So 439 01:34:52.550 --> 01:35:10.900 WLWV Board Room: so the 2,02324 board short-term goals that we have set are goal one, and we've set 4. The first goal is together. We will approve the literacy renewal process which follows ode guidelines and includes input from teachers, parents, guardians, and the community. 440 01:35:11.330 --> 01:35:12.850 WLWV Board Room: Our second goal 441 01:35:13.090 --> 01:35:23.860 WLWV Board Room: is together. We will design and host, a work session to learn about several of the district implemented systems that build competence, confidence and self-efficacy 442 01:35:24.530 --> 01:35:36.220 WLWV Board Room: goal 3. Together. We will value community voice in the authentic engagement of parents, guardians, and students through Board appointed site visits to each school, and their excuse me 443 01:35:36.710 --> 01:35:47.120 WLWV Board Room: and their respective K. Through 8 Pta Slash Pto organization meetings or monthly forums and 2 board facilitated student engagement events this year also 444 01:35:47.600 --> 01:36:05.140 WLWV Board Room: goal 4. Together. We will teach or excuse me with teachers and the community, we will receive voter approval to maintain current programs and staffing levels at schools for the next 5 years through the renewal of the school District local option levy, which will be on the November 20. Third. 445 01:36:05.330 --> 01:36:18.560 WLWV Board Room: Voters ballot. Those are our 4 goals. do we have a motion before we get into discussion to approve the 4 goals that have been presented by one of our 446 01:36:19.080 --> 01:36:32.870 WLWV Board Room: directors. I move to adopt the West and Wilsonville School Board Directors 2023, 24, board, short term goals with measurable metrics. These are goals that are defined by the District Improvement plan and set by the board. 447 01:36:34.800 --> 01:36:35.830 WLWV Board Room: Do I have a second. 448 01:36:37.410 --> 01:36:38.670 WLWV Board Room: so I'll second. 449 01:36:39.720 --> 01:36:46.990 WLWV Board Room: Now we get to open it up for discussion amongst ourselves, as you've had time to review 450 01:36:48.190 --> 01:36:50.459 WLWV Board Room: the goals in depth. Is there 451 01:36:50.840 --> 01:36:59.800 WLWV Board Room: anything that any of you would like to add? Change Wordsmith, discuss about what's been presented? 452 01:37:06.940 --> 01:37:19.170 WLWV Board Room: Director, Vice Chair. Why, I just have just a couple of comments. First of all, I wanna thank directors Vidal and shoemaker. You know, since joining this board 453 01:37:19.180 --> 01:37:43.619 WLWV Board Room: they have been a reminder to us that they just recently went through a really active campaign. And so they heard from our community, loud and clear, and I think that the the rest of us were listening as well. But it was very nice to have this opportunity to set some goals based on the perspectives that they brought directly from the campaigning and the work that they did. 454 01:37:43.740 --> 01:37:57.120 WLWV Board Room: In addition, I feel very fortunate that 2 years ago director sloop served in a role, putting together a middle school, listening session that 455 01:37:57.150 --> 01:38:09.559 WLWV Board Room: to date remains one of the highlights of my service on this board. And so what I'm really proud of with these goals is, I think we have woven together the things that 456 01:38:09.560 --> 01:38:32.829 WLWV Board Room: our directors have heard as they've been campaigning out in the community. We've lowered together. This really deep value that director sloop brings with student and family engagement, and I think really topically bringing in this huge goal that we have to renew our local option levy. So I am in great support of these goals, and I don't have any edits 457 01:38:32.830 --> 01:38:42.899 but of course welcome discussion, but just wanted to give that perspective of how these 4 goals came together. And how supportive I am, and I will be an enthusiastic yes, vote 458 01:38:47.020 --> 01:38:52.449 WLWV Board Room: anyone else. Oh, sorry directive at all. I just wanted to thank 459 01:38:52.530 --> 01:39:01.619 WLWV Board Room: chair Taylor and Vice Chair Wyatt, for their leadership during our board session. On putting together these goals. 460 01:39:01.900 --> 01:39:05.150 WLWV Board Room: you know, we worked, and hard 461 01:39:05.210 --> 01:39:09.610 WLWV Board Room: to to really prioritize. 462 01:39:10.550 --> 01:39:37.160 WLWV Board Room: Prioritize what we wanted to achieve this school year. And always keeping the community in mind, and what is best for our community and families. So I just wanted to thank them for their leadership. And it was actually a a joy to work with everyone and come together. And I, I'm a yes vote on this as well, and I have no edits. 463 01:39:40.540 --> 01:39:41.640 WLWV Board Room: Any other comments. 464 01:39:44.810 --> 01:39:46.190 WLWV Board Room: Director shoemaker. 465 01:39:47.990 --> 01:39:52.520 WLWV Board Room: Yeah, I just wanted to say that that that while 466 01:39:52.590 --> 01:39:55.250 WLWV Board Room: having these goals helps shape 467 01:39:55.310 --> 01:40:01.139 WLWV Board Room: our direction, we continue to need and rely on the input of 468 01:40:01.180 --> 01:40:14.040 WLWV Board Room: our students, our families, our teachers. Now, we don't just step aside and now work on goals. Right? This, this is, yeah. This continues to grow. And it requires that. So I want our community to be aware of that. 469 01:40:16.440 --> 01:40:18.989 WLWV Board Room: And anyone else. 470 01:40:20.350 --> 01:40:28.809 WLWV Board Room: Could I just add that for those who may not know that the short-term goals are connected when Chair Taylor mentioned the long-term goals. 471 01:40:29.020 --> 01:40:43.489 WLWV Board Room: these ones that I don't know if you can see on camera, but there are on the Board website, and these are long, enduring goals, even though we have a a year subscribe to them. They're really very aspirational in terms of 472 01:40:43.500 --> 01:40:52.079 WLWV Board Room: the language, but also long term goals. So the idea being at every school, teachers, leaders work plans 473 01:40:52.380 --> 01:40:55.380 WLWV Board Room: are defining action steps that help 474 01:40:55.450 --> 01:41:07.229 WLWV Board Room: these 4 goals become actualized. And so I appreciate the board finding ways enumeration to connect to each one of these with a short term goal. 475 01:41:07.300 --> 01:41:08.989 And then again 476 01:41:09.090 --> 01:41:30.860 WLWV Board Room: to echo what? Director Shoemaker said. Well, well, I've also written goals and submitted them to the board that connect to these 4. Obviously these 4 goals don't describe everything you're going to do this year, individually as well as collectively. These are ones that you've identified to highlight. But individually, you're gonna go above and beyond, and do 477 01:41:30.860 --> 01:41:45.990 WLWV Board Room: many more things to connect with the community and to contribute to these. These 4 goals represent ones that 5 of you are gonna work on together. That will be evidenced in the community of something that you've chosen to do as a as a group. 478 01:41:46.040 --> 01:41:50.249 WLWV Board Room: and so just wanted to remind the community what the long-term goals were. 479 01:41:51.260 --> 01:41:56.970 WLWV Board Room: And I'll I'll round it out just so that you have an understanding of what the 480 01:41:57.510 --> 01:42:01.240 process was, and how we landed on these short-term goals. 481 01:42:01.320 --> 01:42:14.660 WLWV Board Room: We actually passed out the long-term goals to all of the directors in advance to make sure that they had a copy, and what the ask was was for each 482 01:42:14.820 --> 01:42:27.309 WLWV Board Room: board member to think about the district's long-term goals. and to put some thought process into when we were together as as a group for our 483 01:42:27.560 --> 01:42:28.680 WLWV Board Room: our retreat. 484 01:42:28.780 --> 01:42:39.359 WLWV Board Room: that you come in with some perspectives, so that we're not trying to figure it out why we were there so that we could be intentional on how we used our time. And so what we had was kind of a war room set up of 485 01:42:39.510 --> 01:42:44.139 WLWV Board Room: of big signs that hung, and each sign was 486 01:42:44.730 --> 01:42:57.000 WLWV Board Room: one of the well. There was 4, and there was each on each side. You got to see one of the long term goals of the district, and then we would wanted to figure out, how can we be effective as a board within those 487 01:42:57.220 --> 01:43:08.120 WLWV Board Room: 4 goals, but also making sure that we're honoring the community that we serve. And so we wanted something that we actually could achieve. And we talked a little bit about as a board member. Sometimes you come in 488 01:43:08.150 --> 01:43:14.380 WLWV Board Room: off the campaign trail and you've got these big ideas on how you're gonna change the world only to realize that you need the support of 489 01:43:14.460 --> 01:43:27.269 WLWV Board Room: a few other people to support your idea. And so sometimes you end up with this laundry basket of things that you want to achieve, and you just throw all that laundry in the basket, but none of it ever gets folded and put away. 490 01:43:27.700 --> 01:43:39.499 WLWV Board Room: And so what we wanted to do was make sure that as we set out for this year we had 4 things that we could be held accountable for we could hold each other accountable for, but also so that they were achievable. 491 01:43:40.220 --> 01:43:43.970 And so that kind of gives you some perspective on how we landed on 492 01:43:44.280 --> 01:43:59.469 WLWV Board Room: 4 goals, and as we all put stickies up on these different things, we all had some alignment on things, and so we were able then to condense all that alignment down to see what you see in front of you today. So that's how it came to be. 493 01:43:59.480 --> 01:44:08.860 WLWV Board Room: There were 5 different independent perspectives that then were tallied similar to the vote that we did today. And then we combined those and made 494 01:44:08.880 --> 01:44:20.989 WLWV Board Room: the most important things that that popped out from those from those white boards the priority. So hopefully, that gives you a lens of what we went through to get to where we ended up. So 495 01:44:21.160 --> 01:44:24.170 WLWV Board Room: if there's no other discussion, 496 01:44:24.280 --> 01:44:29.559 WLWV Board Room: and there's no other changes, then we can turn a vote over to Mrs. Douglas. 497 01:44:31.290 --> 01:44:32.680 WLWV Board Room: director, shoemaker. 498 01:44:36.790 --> 01:44:39.830 WLWV Board Room: director, sleuth. Aye, chair, Taylor. 499 01:44:40.540 --> 01:44:45.050 WLWV Board Room: vessel Wyatt, I Director Vidal. Yes, thank you. 500 01:44:46.140 --> 01:44:51.619 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. I'm looking forward to kind of get all these accomplished this year, so 501 01:44:51.800 --> 01:45:10.000 WLWV Board Room: and I'm looking forward to sitting down with our students and our Pto Ptsa groups. This is going to be a kind of an exciting time. So thank you. I'm organizing this up here. 502 01:45:10.470 --> 01:45:24.250 WLWV Board Room: Alright. That will take us into what we already did. Public comment. We moved that up. That takes us into board policy. Dr. Jennifer Spencer Iams. 503 01:45:25.550 --> 01:45:29.610 WLWV Board Room: Thank you so much. I'll bring us home here. 504 01:45:30.050 --> 01:45:59.200 WLWV Board Room: I really appreciated hearing your perspective around giving context to how you came up with those short-term goals and the alignment with much bigger thinking that's behind them. And that kind of brings us to what I'm bringing forward today. In one sense, it's a very narrow kind of technical policy update that's been required through the Department of Education because of legislative change. And so we could just talk about that very narrow part. 505 01:45:59.200 --> 01:46:15.679 WLWV Board Room: But we thought we'd just take just a couple of minutes to provide a little bit of context around the policy of expulsion, which is just not a term we use very often in our district. And so I wanna just provide a little bit of context for that. 506 01:46:16.170 --> 01:46:17.899 WLWV Board Room: So one of the things that's 507 01:46:18.100 --> 01:46:30.159 really important to think about, what is our role in schools? And we think about that through our mission statement of how do we create learning communities for the greatest thinkers and most thoughtful people for the world? 508 01:46:30.160 --> 01:46:53.239 And another way to think about that is, I love this quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. About intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education. So as we're thinking about curriculum adoptions and really important work around standards. We're also always thinking about, how are we supporting young people to who learn to make great decisions. 509 01:46:53.240 --> 01:47:07.899 who learn to navigate problems and solve them in positive and proactive ways, and there is so much to that work. I will share that a few years back with some different members of the board we 510 01:47:07.900 --> 01:47:23.590 WLWV Board Room: presented. Dr. Pryor and I presented maybe one of the longest board reforms we've ever done. Trying to really scratch the surface of all the things that we work on and prioritize and trying to help develop that 511 01:47:23.590 --> 01:47:33.100 working children. And I'm not doing that today. So we're just gonna hit a couple of highlights. Just so we understand the context of school discipline and expulsion. 512 01:47:33.880 --> 01:47:41.220 WLWV Board Room: So one of the things that we've worked on as a district is. We know that children in this 513 01:47:41.230 --> 01:47:56.340 as we think about educating the whole child, which has been one of our long vision themes is that we have to create the conditions to help students live into that character, good judgment, good thinking skills and strong, positive behavior. 514 01:47:56.340 --> 01:48:12.079 We've developed some frameworks that help guide our thinking through that. One of those frameworks is the 7 components of inclusive and equitable communities that talks about things like we actually have to teach the expectations that we want children to live into. 515 01:48:12.450 --> 01:48:33.610 WLWV Board Room: And I don't know if you caught it in the Riverside report tonight. But I'm just gonna say, I was a little bit excited about the feedback about our new Clara clarity around cell phones at high school that there was a lot of angst about this this year. Teachers worrying. Would students live into that expect? Take expectation? 516 01:48:33.610 --> 01:48:54.009 And of course we are early yet in the year. But so far we're continuing to find that as if we teach expectations well and help kids understand the why behind them. And we're consistent around those expectations, most students will rise to those. And we know that. That's just one example. We also know that we have to think about 517 01:48:54.010 --> 01:49:06.840 the the spaces. I loved the examples earlier tonight about taking care of stands and painting the porches. So kids know where to go at Westland High School. 518 01:49:07.180 --> 01:49:19.129 WLWV Board Room: So as we think about effective physical spaces, we know students do better behaviorally when the space is is clear, well laid out and supportive for them. We also know that 519 01:49:19.250 --> 01:49:47.150 WLWV Board Room: when we have those relationships with students, and we clarify that we have high expectations, we believe in them that they can do it, and they can rise to those high expectations. We know that from research we know that from our own anecdotes of working with students at all times, so I won't go any further in this. But I just wanna say, this is where the bulk of our work is is the work that we're doing every day to set the conditions and provide the active kind of coaching and support because 520 01:49:47.360 --> 01:49:49.950 WLWV Board Room: children are going to 521 01:49:50.060 --> 01:50:13.779 WLWV Board Room: sometimes follow directions in ways that are really proactive and supportive. And sometimes they're not going to. They're figuring their lives out. They're figuring out where they fit in a social structure and how to solve problems and sometimes doesn't go well, and we know that that's that's part of school. So we have to set up as much on the proactive end as we possibly can. 522 01:50:13.890 --> 01:50:37.690 WLWV Board Room: One of the other things that I included for you is just some work we've done with our association. We know teachers. Voice is so important. That is just laying out what are our shared values around bringing positive behavior to just continuing to support that in our school? So that's again, just sort of background for you, but something we continue to live into all the time. 523 01:50:38.620 --> 01:50:47.850 WLWV Board Room: So the work is on prevention. The work is on building positive culture. And sometimes things happen. And we need to respond appropriately. 524 01:50:48.260 --> 01:51:01.839 WLWV Board Room: The next slide is one way of thinking about. When something serious happens, we have a number of different ways that we might respond. And 525 01:51:02.270 --> 01:51:13.100 WLWV Board Room: it is always contextual about the student, about safety concerns that may be happening about. Who else may be involved. 526 01:51:13.100 --> 01:51:36.160 about whether or not the student. Ha! Is a student with a disability. We talked earlier. Both director, sloop and director of it all talked about suicide risk. Sometimes that is sort of comorbid with other safety things that are going on for students, a really important thing that we're paying attention to. So our administrators really think deeply 527 01:51:36.370 --> 01:51:56.179 WLWV Board Room: about when something happens that's either unsafe or a real violation of school rules. We're gonna think through which one of these apply, or 2, or 3, or some combination. Sometimes we might use something like school discipline to suspend a student for a day or 2. 528 01:51:56.190 --> 01:52:29.530 WLWV Board Room: If we have heard. There may have been a threat, and we need time to investigate. Was that threat credible? Do we have the right supports in place to bring that student back lease back safely to school all those sorts of things. Then we might come back up and really think about restorative practices. If there was a threat made, and there were some students who are really scared. How do we bring that student back into community? And how do we work together to help students get what they need so that they can feel safe moving forward and learning. 529 01:52:29.790 --> 01:52:32.570 So all of these systems of support 530 01:52:32.590 --> 01:52:40.239 WLWV Board Room: work together in lots of different ways, and school discipline is an important part of that. It's not all of it right 531 01:52:41.130 --> 01:52:46.230 WLWV Board Room: in the next slide. This is just a very simplified 532 01:52:46.290 --> 01:53:11.399 WLWV Board Room: way of thinking about school discipline, that you might think about the very most frequent thing that we do at the base of that pyramid might be reteaching or redirection. Sometimes you see this in a primary school where students are really struggling with how to walk down the hallway, and the teacher might say, Hey, let's try that one again, and they go back and try it again, and are more successful doing that 533 01:53:11.400 --> 01:53:27.090 sometimes there's those natural consequences of gosh! I, you know I wasn't on time to school, and so I missed an event that I wish I had been at, and so there's some things there for that student. Sometimes we bring students into community and talk about 534 01:53:27.190 --> 01:53:32.959 WLWV Board Room: how they experienced an event that was problematic and how they can make amends 535 01:53:33.080 --> 01:53:40.969 WLWV Board Room: and be held accountable amongst each other and to their community to make it right. And that's when we think about those restorative practices. 536 01:53:41.740 --> 01:53:46.749 Sometimes we think about what we call exclusionary discipline. Where a student 537 01:53:46.810 --> 01:54:17.400 WLWV Board Room: is maybe taken out of a class for a period of time. Maybe we need need a day to just let students cool down and let emotions calm while we get some other things in place, and that might be what we would do is either an in-school suspension, or, if it's very serious, we might have an out of school suspension. Those are very regulated by the Department of Education. They'll have a lot of rules about them. We have to document them carefully. Parents have to be fully informed. If we have do any sort of suspension. 538 01:54:18.780 --> 01:54:37.829 WLWV Board Room: then at the very most rare situation we. We have in our continuum of discipline processes something called expulsion. Expulsion is very serious and very, very rare. I've been involved in my 11 years in the district in 3 expulsion hearings 539 01:54:38.010 --> 01:55:05.560 WLWV Board Room: so very, very rare. Most often they have to do with serious weapons violations where we have a real safety concern. So there's something in the new policy that talks about, not ex, you know. The concerns about expelling students below fifth grade that's required by law to be put in there. It's not something that we've had a concern about in our district. We have expelled exactly 0 children. 540 01:55:05.960 --> 01:55:07.540 WLWV Board Room: fifth grade and under 541 01:55:07.720 --> 01:55:28.369 WLWV Board Room: at any time that we were able to find Curtis is our institutional knowledge. We went back and tried to look. Did this ever happen? And typically if we had a situation that was very unsafe with a student. That was younger. We would be employing some, using some of those other systems of support to help resolve the issue. 542 01:55:28.770 --> 01:55:54.200 WLWV Board Room: So with that background, we're bringing forward today a proposed shift in our policy around expulsion. It's required that every school district has a policy around expulsion. And these shifts today both bring in the legislative requirements that are very clear to limit expulsions for young children. 543 01:55:54.470 --> 01:56:05.649 WLWV Board Room: and are more clear about what's the Board's role in an expulsion process. So the policy we're bringing forward clarifies that 544 01:56:05.870 --> 01:56:09.070 WLWV Board Room: the superintendent or superintendent's designee 545 01:56:09.090 --> 01:56:28.390 WLWV Board Room: would appoint a hearings officer to run the expulsion process. This is typically what we've already done in our district. It's really not a change for us, but it's writing it more clearly in the policy, and that the Board's role would be than if there was ever an appeal to an expulsion process. 546 01:56:28.620 --> 01:56:37.409 So those are the things we wanted to bring forward to today with giving you a little bit of context around expulsion, and I'll leave it to your discussion. 547 01:56:41.930 --> 01:56:43.720 Thank you 548 01:56:43.900 --> 01:56:48.240 WLWV Board Room: for that. Education that is complex. 549 01:56:49.920 --> 01:57:01.509 WLWV Board Room: and before we get in any discussion, do we have a motion to approve what has been presented? I move to approve board policy, Jgee, as presented. 550 01:57:01.940 --> 01:57:08.010 WLWV Board Room: I second alright. That opens it up for discussion questions. 551 01:57:08.530 --> 01:57:27.249 WLWV Board Room: do. Does any of the directors have questions or comments? Okay, I just wanna thank Dr. Spencer. I am for providing all of us context, I really appreciate it. I feel like this is a thoughtful and planful explanation, and I really appreciate that in the last 11 years 552 01:57:27.250 --> 01:57:44.569 WLWV Board Room: only 3 students have been expelled. And to me that means that we really strive to keep our students in our community, which is the most important thing for our students and our students future. So I appreciate that. Thank you. I'll be voting. Yes, on this 553 01:57:48.760 --> 01:57:50.080 WLWV Board Room: anyone else. 554 01:57:52.590 --> 01:57:56.590 WLWV Board Room: Well, I want to say thank you for all the work that that has gone into 555 01:57:56.720 --> 01:57:59.899 WLWV Board Room: developing a system 556 01:58:00.470 --> 01:58:04.859 WLWV Board Room: to follow, because I know that as I've been inside of the district. 557 01:58:05.150 --> 01:58:11.530 WLWV Board Room: There's been talks and debates as to what is the proper 558 01:58:11.700 --> 01:58:19.009 WLWV Board Room: pathway to take for issues that arise that have to go through maybe a a pyramid like this. 559 01:58:19.130 --> 01:58:27.500 WLWV Board Room: and I hope that I don't know if this is up and available on our site. But I hope that when you have 560 01:58:27.630 --> 01:58:34.540 WLWV Board Room: issues with your children, which naturally there are going to be issues. their kids 561 01:58:34.600 --> 01:58:36.839 WLWV Board Room: and that you would 562 01:58:37.020 --> 01:58:43.610 WLWV Board Room: take the time to go look at where maybe something that you're experiencing might fall on this 563 01:58:44.080 --> 01:58:45.260 WLWV Board Room: kind of scale. 564 01:58:46.390 --> 01:58:58.389 WLWV Board Room: I know that as board members, we get a lot of emails about parents who are experiencing things with their children. And it's important for for people who email us to know that 565 01:58:58.580 --> 01:59:01.279 WLWV Board Room: it's not our job. It's not our role. 566 01:59:01.380 --> 01:59:04.119 And we can give you guidance as to 567 01:59:04.250 --> 01:59:11.679 WLWV Board Room: the steps that you start with. And typically that's going to start within your school, and the more that you educate yourself around 568 01:59:11.760 --> 01:59:22.140 WLWV Board Room: what the school process is. You can maybe think about some of the frustrations that you have prior to arrival. Maybe you deal with some of those emotions prior to coming to have a conversation with a principal 569 01:59:22.220 --> 01:59:23.539 or vice principal 570 01:59:23.550 --> 01:59:24.989 WLWV Board Room: or a counselor. 571 01:59:25.540 --> 01:59:32.930 And at least you're you're coming in with some perspective of the steps that they're gonna take you through before it reaches 572 01:59:33.110 --> 01:59:43.550 WLWV Board Room: a vice superintendent or a superintendent, and maybe a board in the case of an expulsion appeal. So thank you so much. And I hope that people are listening and 573 01:59:43.750 --> 01:59:57.289 WLWV Board Room: understand that because I know that I'm going to use this as a tool to respond to emails like, Hey, by the way, did you know we got this fancy stuff that you can go look at. So thank you for the work. 574 01:59:57.520 --> 02:00:02.769 WLWV Board Room: and thank you for listening to my soapbox rant so. Shall we call the vote? 575 02:00:05.190 --> 02:00:09.360 WLWV Board Room: Dr. Schumacher? Yes. director, slip. Aye. 576 02:00:09.460 --> 02:00:10.690 WLWV Board Room: chair, Taylor. 577 02:00:10.700 --> 02:00:15.700 WLWV Board Room: Hi, share Wyatt. Yes, thank you. 578 02:00:17.460 --> 02:00:23.280 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. We do have one quick addition. 579 02:00:23.700 --> 02:00:30.879 WLWV Board Room: Earlier. When we asked if there was a a public comment that remained, we didn't 580 02:00:31.140 --> 02:00:34.459 WLWV Board Room: have anyone, but we did have one come in. So 581 02:00:34.560 --> 02:00:40.910 WLWV Board Room: we have one more public comment from a member of our community that we'd like to extend that grace to. 582 02:00:41.120 --> 02:00:44.030 and that is Kara Clark. 583 02:00:47.640 --> 02:01:10.589 WLWV Board Room: You have 3 min. Thank you. Friends. I wasn't planning on talking tonight, and I really appreciate that very explicit description of what at the new board policy is going to be and discussion in front of the board. I'm gonna talk about the 20 first Century Site Councils AR. That was just put through without any kind of formal discussion in front of the public. 584 02:01:10.730 --> 02:01:30.329 WLWV Board Room: This is a place for parents in the district, and we should be talking about this in a forum where parents can discuss it and be privy to the conversations of what the district's decisions of where are places in the district? I wanna mention something. And this is, says Per statute. This is in the new AR 585 02:01:30.440 --> 02:01:52.169 WLWV Board Room: per statute. I'm not going to read the numbers. If a School District Board determines that a School Site Council is unable to fill the requirements of the section and the needs of the school site to require different composition. The School District Board shall establish the 20 first century Site councils in a matter that best meets the educational needs of the district. 586 02:01:52.640 --> 02:02:08.510 WLWV Board Room: Sorry that was very jumbled, because I'm very upset about this, because we deserve to talk about it. This needs to be a public conversation. and it was put through in an AR. Now, if you don't know, we already have a board policy that says 587 02:02:09.330 --> 02:02:10.240 WLWV Board Room: that. 588 02:02:13.570 --> 02:02:14.330 WLWV Board Room: and 589 02:02:16.150 --> 02:02:18.370 WLWV Board Room: it is the Board's belief. 590 02:02:20.460 --> 02:02:29.079 WLWV Board Room: Sorry I'm so upset about this. It is the policy of the Board to establish 20 first century site councils in each of the district schools 591 02:02:30.220 --> 02:02:44.270 WLWV Board Room: in our board policy. It says that you believe that we should have these institutions in our schools. It is in the law to have them in our schools. An. A. R. Can follow the Board policy. But it is not following the Board policy 592 02:02:44.510 --> 02:02:57.450 WLWV Board Room: you as a board. It is your responsibility to write what a site Council should be for us. And this is a place where parents and teachers collaborate for the outcomes of our children. 593 02:02:58.160 --> 02:03:08.399 WLWV Board Room: We deserve to have this place. We deserve to have a space safe place to talk about the needs of our of our kids and the nuances of the people in our building 594 02:03:08.410 --> 02:03:30.080 WLWV Board Room: a Ptso does not do it. A Pta does not do it. It requires money to be enrolled in a Pta. To be a member of it, and that is not equitable. These organizations are separate organizations that have their own agendas and roles that is not meant for Site council. This is the school buildings safety net. 595 02:03:30.220 --> 02:03:32.599 WLWV Board Room: This is the safety net for our kids. 596 02:03:33.250 --> 02:03:45.699 WLWV Board Room: I really wish that you'd bring this up on an agenda item for the public. Let's have a real conversation about what our district needs and where we're going. And let parents have a voice. Thank you. 597 02:03:55.660 --> 02:03:56.560 WLWV Board Room: Okay. 598 02:03:56.960 --> 02:04:01.010 WLWV Board Room: important dates for the board. 599 02:04:02.400 --> 02:04:04.950 One of the things that I brought up. 600 02:04:05.520 --> 02:04:09.570 WLWV Board Room: in my own mind. 601 02:04:09.830 --> 02:04:14.430 WLWV Board Room: and with another board member was we used to combine 602 02:04:14.630 --> 02:04:22.140 WLWV Board Room: our work sessions with our board meetings, meaning that we would come an hour early, have the work session and flow right into 603 02:04:22.310 --> 02:04:31.079 WLWV Board Room: the board meeting and There was some discussion around how we go back to that format potentially. 604 02:04:31.230 --> 02:04:36.610 WLWV Board Room: if it's okay with the existing directors, and collectively, the board 605 02:04:36.720 --> 02:04:46.830 WLWV Board Room: to do that again. initially, my concern was the location of of where people might work. 606 02:04:46.910 --> 02:05:11.600 WLWV Board Room: And I pulled aside. Director meet all because, you know, she works for a hospital system, and I thought that she was having to commute from across town to get all the way back to Wesleyan and 50'clock traffic, and so I pulled her aside to say, oh, well, you know, you're the one who's being impacted the most by this, because you work the furthest out of all of us being that 607 02:05:11.950 --> 02:05:23.250 WLWV Board Room: you're up the hill. You're up the hill. I'm right down the street, and you're up the hill, and so I just wanted to throw it out for the the Board to at least have a discussion around 608 02:05:23.610 --> 02:05:31.940 WLWV Board Room: and ask Dr. Ludwig and Mrs. Douglas. It would it be disruptive if we were to go back to a format like that because it's already 609 02:05:32.050 --> 02:05:39.819 WLWV Board Room: print it, or is it not disruptive? So I just have an open forum to kind of discuss that you have any thoughts around that Dr. Ludwig. 610 02:05:41.810 --> 02:05:52.390 WLWV Board Room: So I just wasn't prepared for this topic. So I didn't. So just to clarify. Are you wanting to change the board calendar with the meetings and the work sessions. 611 02:05:52.580 --> 02:06:00.529 WLWV Board Room: Well, is there an opportunity to combine work sessions with the board meetings? If not, then it is what it is. 612 02:06:00.800 --> 02:06:05.959 WLWV Board Room: go ahead to clarify. Are you saying that like for October, for example. 613 02:06:06.010 --> 02:06:08.349 WLWV Board Room: that we would have the 614 02:06:08.740 --> 02:06:14.499 WLWV Board Room: the work session that's scheduled for the sixteenth take place before our regular meeting on the second. 615 02:06:14.810 --> 02:06:23.320 WLWV Board Room: so we would just come in a month, where we have a board meeting and a work session. We would combine into one night. Is that what you're saying? Correct? Okay. 616 02:06:23.590 --> 02:06:34.200 WLWV Board Room: which is what we did before now? We don't have to. I'm just throwing it out there for the board, and I don't have a preference. So you, I think you guys should know that I don't have a preference one way or the other. 617 02:06:34.780 --> 02:06:49.169 WLWV Board Room: I was just thinking about it through the lens of the the rest of the board, so II don't know if it was a regular practice. It may have happened occasionally, because you also have executive session. Sometimes that happens before a regular meeting. 618 02:06:49.690 --> 02:06:54.980 WLWV Board Room: So on a night that maybe you knew you wouldn't have executive session. 619 02:06:55.410 --> 02:07:02.520 WLWV Board Room: and it was hard to find a date for a work session. You could do it all in one night. It does make a long night. 620 02:07:03.080 --> 02:07:07.949 WLWV Board Room: And there were times when I think, that worked for the board with with 621 02:07:08.310 --> 02:07:17.760 WLWV Board Room: whatever was on that year's agenda. I know during Covid, when we were making a lot of big decisions. 622 02:07:17.860 --> 02:07:27.529 WLWV Board Room: That there were times the Board was learning information as well as then having a meeting, and wanted it all in one night. So II think 623 02:07:28.070 --> 02:07:42.350 WLWV Board Room: you know, it's really up to you as a board. If you decide you want to go to that format again. No pressure. I thought I would bring it up just in case so. And really it came to me thinking about 624 02:07:42.520 --> 02:08:13.069 WLWV Board Room: Director Vidal having to being that she works for Randall Children's Hospital. I was thinking that she was commuting all the way from northeast Portland. I really appreciate you thinking of my work schedule, but I do work from home the majority of the time. And so it the schedule is actually okay. If it would be disruptive. And I didn't think about 625 02:08:13.070 --> 02:08:28.399 WLWV Board Room: the executive sessions coupled with the work session and regular meeting. So I yeah, gotcha. So in the spirit of that, I didn't know if any other board members may be impacted. So I figured I'd bring it up. And but 626 02:08:28.440 --> 02:08:45.820 WLWV Board Room: other than that, there's nothing that needs it to be changed. And I think just you know, we can stay flexible. I mean, you've set the calendar as the year progresses. If something comes up where you feel it's advantageous to do something with work session, regular meeting in one night, or there's 627 02:08:46.220 --> 02:08:59.730 WLWV Board Room: you, you discover you can't have a quorum because of just life happening. We can. Certainly staff will be flexible with what the Board needs to reconsider in terms of schedule this this year. Awesome. 628 02:09:00.320 --> 02:09:01.230 WLWV Board Room: Thank you. 629 02:09:01.840 --> 02:09:06.289 WLWV Board Room: I believe we have nothing remaining. So 630 02:09:06.330 --> 02:09:07.639 WLWV Board Room: I'm going to call the meeting.
